Will Thatcher
|
Yeah, this is really their show here, I know Will isn’t going to drive anything. The timing is unfortunate with Karse being away for another few days. Hopefully Brom will return by then too! No concern here if we dawdle a few days.
| Hadin "The Pale" Cassoren |
Hadin looks around, overtaken by the emotion of finding this sacred place of his god. His eyes wander on the magnificent scenery, and the majesty of the natural place fill his heart and soul with awe.
Nevertheless, he remembers soon than the priest talked about the massive bear that guards this sanctuary of Erastil, and the young man seizes his flail with strength, and takes a firmer grasp of his shield. His voice is assured, more mature than ever.
Will, Dendarial, place yourself where you get a good line of fire, please. Sir Karse and myself will have to engage this beast, if it's here.It is our sacred duty.
After a short prayer to his god, he slowly, carefully walks inside the place, alert, motioning Sir Karse to come along.
| Dendarial the Ken Hunter |
Dendarial is a staunch follower of Desan. But that does not dampen the warm feeling he gets from being able to track the bear to this holy place and the joy he has seeing the elation on the faces of the two paladins of Erastil. He chooses a place with a good vantage and prepared for a fight.
Do the tracks he was following lead into the cave? I do not want to be focused on the cave and then get jumped by the bear from outside the cave...
Will Thatcher
|
Seeing Hadin and Karse get ready for combat, Will pipes up. ”So are we to fight this sacred beast in one of your sacred places, or will this be more of a ‘commune with the chosen animal and let his strength infuse you’ kind of thing. I don’t want to upset one of your sacred beasts by shooting it when it isn’t necessary, but I also don’t fancy letting it maul the two of you before we can intervene.” That said, Will dons his shield; leaving his bow on his back and sword in its scabbard.
Will plans to stay about 15-20 feet behind the two Erastilians.
| GM Captain Trips |
As the group scans the area, and the paladins move towards the mouth of the cave that marks the entrance to what must have once have been a shrine to Erastil, a thunderous roar can be heard from within the depths of the darkness. The sheer volume of the noise reverberates through the air, shattering the silence that came before. Birds alight from the trees and take to the sky, fleeing the area with haste at the sound.
Appearing at the mouth of the shine, an enormous brown bear shambles forward, its fur a matted tangle of burrs and twigs. It roars once more, bringing itself upright to a full nine feet in height, its massive paws ending in claws the size of daggers. At the end of the display it falls back on all fours and issues a challenging roar at the party, wickedly sharp teeth lining its huge mouth, and saliva flying into the air to accompany the roar.
Will Thatcher
|
Will takes a step back as the mighty beast makes its presence known, clearly awed by the spectacle. Looking to see the paladins reactions, Will begins humming to himself, getting ready to burst into an inspiring song if the need arises.
Ready an action to start Inspire Courage if either Paladin gets aggressive.
Sir Karse
|
Karse keeps his flail at the ready and makes sure that his holy symbol is prominently displayed. "Great One, we mean you no harm."
| Hadin "The Pale" Cassoren |
Hadin grows suddenly very pale
By the Holy antlers of Erastil... We were said it was a big bear.. but I didn't expected something like this!
Breathing slowly, he rises his flail too, ready to strike
I will not falter in my sacred duty, beast. I order you to leave that old temple of Erastil.NOW!
| GM Captain Trips |
The creature issues forth another thundering roar and barrels towards the group.
Brom's eyes light up and he is awarded with yet another worth (or vorthy) foe.
He's here, if only in spirit
Initiative
Denarial: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
Karse: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 1 = 19
Hadin: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (15) + 0 = 15
Will: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
Brom: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
Big old nasty bear: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
Karse, Hadin, and Dendarial are up! Map is updated
| GM Captain Trips |
Would my readied action be taking effect when Karse/Hadin act?
I'll say that you were able to strike up your inspire as the combat begins. You will keep the same initiative order, but will act out of turn for the first round. I'd say the same for Den, but he's going before the bear anyway.
| Dendarial the Ken Hunter |
Hmm. I'd argue I should get my readied action and then another shot, no? I'll take both shots here, the first from longer range (no PBS) and without the bard song. Only count the second if you rule I only get one shot.
As the bear begins to move Den looses his readied arrow.
Long Bow: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 151d8 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
The elven hunter has another arrow on the string and looses it as the bear to close to within 30'. He then moves back some and commands his owl to fly high, preparing for a dive.
Long Bow: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 181d8 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
Sir Karse
|
EDIT: Krase will first approach the bear, as it is not as close as I envisioned. If you will permit, when he is in a position to attack, I'll use the roll below.
Karse swings his flail at the animal, hoping to dissuade it without having to resort to killing it. Still, he puts his full force behind the blow.
Karse vs. Bear (flail): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24
Confirm critical: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
| GM Captain Trips |
If we were doing a surprise round I'd do that, but it is simpler to just forgo the surprise round and do initiative. You did have party members attempting to approach peacefully, so not everyone was expecting trouble. Had you simply shot, you'd get exactly what you had in mind there.
I made a change to the map, so make sure you check it.
| GM Captain Trips |
Karse swings his flail at the animal, hoping to dissuade it without having to resort to killing it. Still, he puts his full force behind the blow.
[dice=Karse vs. Bear (flail)]1d20+4
[dice=Damage]1d8+2
Karse is currently 85' away, thats a HUGE flail! Seriously though, if you are unable to see the map let me know and I'll try to improvise.

What? Karse's flail just might be that big! Oh, you mean the one he's holding! :) Anyway, please see the edit, above.
| GM Captain Trips |
Got it, we will go with it as a readied attack vs. approach.
Dendarial fires an arrow off at the massive animal, the shot skipping across the edge of a pillar and flying off into the cave behind it. At the same time Acio takes to the sky, circling above the party upon the ranger's command. Sir Karse strides forward, a determined look on his face, and holds his flail at the ready, preparing to confront the creature.

I can tell you right now that when I'm at work, all file sharing has been blocked. I usually try and take a pic on my phone from home, however.
Winding the words into his song, Will tells everyone; "Stay fairly close to me. Sarenrae will bless our fight."
| Hadin "The Pale" Cassoren |
Can't see any map, where's the link?
Hadin gives some space to Sir Karse, so they can both use their flails without any risk of entangling their weapons
We fight not for our pride, bear, but for the glory of Erastil. Leave the place in peace, and bow to the will of our god.
| GM Captain Trips |
I'm assuming Hadin is stepping up with Karse and readying
The massive bear hurtles down the broken steps, clambering over the fallen stones and columns and landing in place directly in front of Sir Karse, growling and tearing the ground with its massive claws.
Karse's readied action goes off at this point.
The paladin spins his flail around to meet the foe, his flail suddenly erupting with a bright golden glow of light, landing a hammering hit on the bear and causing it to stumble slightly. Bloodshot eyes and a mouth of yellowed and rotten teeth promise death to the paladin as the beast stares him down.
Bear double moved forward. Brom is up, then back to Dendarial, Karse, and Hadin.
Brom brandishes Krasa and lets forth a bellowing battle cry, quickly moving up to Sir Karse's side to greet this worthy foe.
Brom, double move.
| Dendarial the Ken Hunter |
Has anyone heard from Brom?
Inspired by Will, Den move closer for a clear shot (hopefully able to shoot between people and avoid cover) and takes it.
Longbow: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 271d8 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
Confirm: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 182d8 + 6 ⇒ (5, 4) + 6 = 15
And Acio swoops down from the sky striking at the bear.
Swooping Charge: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 272d4 + 2 ⇒ (3, 3) + 2 = 8 Bear is now Staggered!
Confirm: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 86d4 + 6 ⇒ (3, 2, 3, 2, 1, 4) + 6 = 21 WOW, Two nat 20s. If the swooping charge would have confirmed it does X4 damage which would have been 8d4.
| GM Captain Trips |
Been trying to contact him, have tried reaching out to one of his PFS GMs that is local, no word yet. Probably will have no choice but to remove him soon.
Dendarial sends an arrow flashing towards the creature, the projectile imbedding itself deeply into the beast. The bear hardly registers the shot in its rage and its eyes never once stray from those of Sir Karse.
Acio swoops in and attacks the bear with his talons, raking fur and tearing into its hide with a damaging strike.
Will Thatcher
|
Please remember buffs! It's pretty much what I do!
Continuing his song, Will maneuvers himself a few feet and calls upon the blessings of Sarenrae, a sunbeam striking his holy symbols and lancing out into his party members, infusing them with a warm glow.
Total buffs: +2 to hit, +1 damage, +1 to fear saves. 2/6 rounds of song used, 10 rounds of Bless
| Dendarial the Ken Hunter |
I remembered - got 4 extra points of damage from you last round. Had Acio critted it would have been 7. :) Team ranger did 32 points of damage and left the bear Staggered - which means it only gets a single attack. Not a bad round for second level ranger.
Sir Karse
|
Oh, sorry. Must have missed where we were up again.
Karse lets fly with another blow from his flail, but this time it is only a glancing blow (if it hits at all).
Karse vs. Bear (flail): 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 4 + 2 = 15
Damage (flail): 1d8 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 2 + 1 = 4
| GM Captain Trips |
Hadin and Sir Karse both act in concert, bring their flails to bear on the massive animal. As each of the two paladins swing, once again their weapons begin to brightly glow with a golden radiance and they almost seem to guide themselves towards the creature, both slamming home and staggering the beast terribly. Its animal eyes show almost a hint of intelligence as they dart back and forth between the two paladins.
Karse even, Hadin odd: 1d2 ⇒ 1
The great bear settles its eyes on Hadin, raising up and taking a swipe at the man with its huge paw...
Attack, Claw: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27
Damage: 1d6 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10
Grab: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (16) + 13 = 29
The creature's attack rakes across Hadin's chest, scoring his armor and catching on it as it passes, pulling the paladin into the bear's massive bulk and holding him fast. Its eyes bore into the paladin as it opens its mouth and lets forth a bellowing roar, teeth exposed and ready to sink into Hadin's soft flesh.
Hadin is grappled, Will's Bless will now go off, followed by Brom's attack. After that Dendarial, Karse, and Hadin are back up.
Brom loosens Krasa in his hands and takes a mighty swing at the bear, hoping to earn himself yet another pelt...
Attack: 1d20 + 6 + 1 - 1 ⇒ (16) + 6 + 1 - 1 = 22
Damage: 2d6 + 7 + 1 + 4 ⇒ (6, 4) + 7 + 1 + 4 = 22
Brom's swing connects and nearly tears the bear's arm off as it pounds into the creature, ripping away fur and hide as it passes.
The rest of the party, sans Will, is now up.
| Dendarial the Ken Hunter |
Acio takes a full round action to fly up and prepare for another dive.
Den moves up to close to within 30' and fires another arrow.
Longbow: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (9) + 9 = 181d8 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
Bonuses in play include:Precise Shot, Point Blank Shot, Bless, and Bard Song.
Sir Karse
|
Karse swings for the bear's head, careful not to accidentally hit Hadin.
Karse vs. Bear (flail): 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 4 + 2 = 26
Crit Confirm: 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 4 + 2 = 9
Damage (flail): 1d8 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 2 + 1 = 6
| Hadin "The Pale" Cassoren |
Hadin tries to free himself from the massives paws and desperatly tries to hit it with his flail
You won't get me, bear!
Flail 1d20 + 4 + 1 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (12) + 4 + 1 + 1 - 2 = 16
Damage 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
don't know the precise mechanics to get free from a bear hug, sorry..
| Dendarial the Ken Hunter |
Next Round Den continues his bow attacks on the grappling bear and Acio swoops again.
Longbow: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 161d8 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11
Swooping Charge: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 232d4 + 2 ⇒ (4, 2) + 2 = 8
| Dendarial the Ken Hunter |
Well, the bright side is that you are making it easier for us to hit the bear. :) It nly got one attack the round it grabbed you because the owl staggered it. I predict it will not play as nice now.
| GM Captain Trips |
Sorry about the delay folks, I hate leaving things in combat. I was swamped at work yesterday and did not get a chance to post.
Karse once again swings his flail at the beast, and once again it flares with a bright golden light, slamming home and wounding it gravely. It shudders a step, barely holding on to life but consumed by rage and fighting on. It tears into Hadin with claws and teeth, abandoning its hold on the paladin and losing itself to pure fury...
Claw: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17
Damage: 1d6 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8
Claw: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10
Damage: 1d6 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7
Bite: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17
Damage: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9
...and it manages to rip a vicious wound into the paladin with its claws before chomping down on him with its powerful teeth, shedding flesh and splintering bone.
Hadin takes a total of 17 damage from the two attacks.
For the sake of resolution, as it has 2hp remaining
Denarial lets his arrow loose as Acio swoops in for another attack. The missile flies true and imbeds itself in the creature's skull, sending it crashing to the ground and killing it outright.
As soon as the creature falls, an almost contended sigh escapes the beast's toothy maw and a pure golden light envelops the corpse, shining outward and nearly blinding the party. The entire scene stands in contrast, light and shadow, as the brilliance fades and the area is bathed in a warm glow. As the group stands shocked, the corpse of the bear changes, shrinking down and clumps of hair falling from the beast until what remains is the body of an ancient looking human male. In mere seconds the corpse begins to shrivel and collapse, turning to dust before your eyes before a gentle wind sweeps through the area and blows it away, the remains becoming a part of the earth.
As the dust vanishes, the stone itself seems to heal. Cracks in columns repairing themselves somewhat and the overgrown nature of the vegetation recedes quickly to give the appearance of an area that is well tended. The murky and stagnant pool radiates a pure golden aura and is instantly transformed into pure and sparkling water.
Hadin and Karse both feel a warm touch from deep within themselves, a divine feeling that they have both served their faith in some important and profound way.
Out of almost blind luck and random rolls you all managed to have the right people in the right group on this one. :)

Will rushes to Hadin's side as the paladins life blood flows into the earth of the shrine. "I know this isn't really the place for this, but Sarenrae save him!" A warm glow appeas in Will's hand and he bathe the warrior in it's glow. After many agonizing seconds, Hadin's eyes flutter open as he regains conciousness. Then Will's hums a little tune and a slightly different glow interlaces with the first, further recovering the carpenter.
Hadin was at -7 after the onslaught.
Rebuke Death three times: 3d4 ⇒ (4, 1, 2) = 7
Hadin is at 0 and is revived
Cure Light (bardside): 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
Hadin is at 8 HP now. Resources used in fight, 2 rounds of song, 1 cleric spell, 1 bard spell, and 3 rebuke deaths
