Listening to Zakon's assessment of the day at trial Lady Eleanor, simply smiles when he mentions her mother. While her mother had long ago pass, it was her parent's love that set her down this path. I too lost my mother while I was quite young. I feel that sometimes she watches what I have done. I hope I have made her proud. Noticing the "bit of dirt" in Zakon's eyes, Lady Eleanor does not bring attention to the state of his eyes to avoid any embarrassment for the tiefling.

Famished, Lady Eleanor happily bites into the leg of meat she ordered. After a couple of bites she composes herself. I have to remember to act lady like, at least here in town. Eating more graciously, she listens to her companions help plan the next day of trial.

Gaarm watches as Lady Eleanor eats while they wait for the trial to begin for the day. "You know. If you aren't all the way comfortable with the um....situation you have going on." he waves his knife around in a circle before slicing his sausage down the length. "I hear some of the more adventurous priests might be able to remedy all of this."

Lady Eleanor shakes her head at Gaarm's playing with his food. I'm willing to give my situation a shot. Death brings a new perspective on things. If Arshea did not want me to be a woman, she would not have made me a woman. Sometimes I feel that she is just messing with me but who am I to say? I can't say I was a fan of her means of intervention, but life is an adventure right?

Lady Eleanor turns in her seat to listen to Naxx's performance. It's not bad and it's a little soothing, at least the parts heard over the chatter.

Zakon:
AS you reach the Lepidstadt law enforcement, the temper of the room noticeably drops as the desk officer receives you.

You explain your request, but the stone-faced man seems unmoved. "You have filed a request and the Chymic Works and any evidence inside are being used for the trial." he informs you. "If your locket is found, then we will return it as soon as we are able." he adds.

As you are about to go, the man slides you a piece of paper. "You inquired as to the auction of the Chymic Works. This is the relevant information." he states as you scan the parchment.

The auction will be held one week after the conclusion of the trial. All goods obtained from the Chymic Works as well as the Works itself are for sale. The auction will be held at the Chymic Works, in the courtyard at noon.

Below the information about the auction, you see a list of starting prices. The Works itself is valued at 10,000 GP due to being a large facility in the town, so bidding will start at 1/10th of the price, or 1,000 GP.

The crime for the third day is the Karb Sanctuary Arson and the murder of Doctor Brada.

You busily eat up as you sit down for an early dinner and Zakon's idea of visiting the shops is quite good, however there seems little interest in that. That being said, the shops should still be open by the time you finish eating and figuring out a plan, though there still doesn't seem to be one.

You can find anything under 5,000 GP in Lepidstadt.

At the inn

Zakon involuntarily crosses his legs as Gaarm speaks. "Wait." he exclaims turning to Lady Eleanor. "You still have a ..?" Zakon leaves the thought unspoken as he shakes his head. "You know what, never mind. I am gonna pretend that this conversation never happened."

"So we have to prepare for Karb Sanctuary Arson and the murder of Doctor Brada. There is not much for me to add, so if you all don't mind, I would like to hit the market before the day ends. Anyone care to join me?"

I noticed there are a ton of items unclaimed on the loot sheet - anyone care if I sell some stuff?

GM:
Listening to the man talk, Zakon nods his head. "I totally understand. And may I point out that the populace has you pegged wrong. I am so pleased at how efficient and polite you all have been. Nothing like the 'do nothing imbeciles' I heard bandied about in the street.

"And this." Zakon folds the paper and puts it in his pocket, "I really appreciate. Also, since I have your attention, I have a certain skill set, one that specializes in investigating. If the Lepidstadt law enforcement ever needs additional assistance, I would be more than happy to work out an arrangement. It seems that I find myself short on funds and could use some extra coin. You found find me a hard worker, skilled, and cheap.

"Regardless, I bid you all a good day, sirs." Zakon gives the man a half-bow and a smile before departing.

Walking the market of Lepidstadt, Zakon does his best to ignore the magnanimous stares, the whispered insults of his race, and puts on a brave face. "Good day, madam. What a fine looking lad you have there. Shall grow up to be a sissy if I ever say one." comes his muttered insult quietly enough not to be overheard. Deriving small satisfaction from the petulant display, Zakon finds himself wandering the market, looking for items that catch his eye.

He approaches a stall and begins to inspect a golden broach, turning the item over in his hands, holding it close to his eye to inspect it, before addressing the stall owner, "My, this is fine work. Have you ever tried to sell your wares in Kaptesh? I feel you would do well even in a market like that. Oh, and I heard a ruckus over at the Chymic Works. Heard the owners skipped town. They still owe me some items, any idea where they went?"

This scene is repeated as Zakon moves through the market before ultimately coming to the place he intended to go all along, Elred's Magical Emporium.

Pushing open the wicker door, Zakon enters and is immediately hit by the uniquely spicy smell of an arcane workshop. "Hello, I am Zakon Shkeles. I am told that this is the place to visit when looking for magical items. I have this." and he unlaces his shirt and takes off his amulet. "I need something more powerful. Recently I found myself in an altercation with some undesirables, and I was overpowered. I cannot risk that again. What can you do for me? I have some coin, and this." he takes out the mammoth tusk scrimshaw from the Realm of the Mammoth Lords. "Pretty cool, huh!"

Gaarm spends the remainder of the morning giving Lady Eleanor counsel and guidance towards the trial as he tries to recall everything that he can remember back at the Inn while Zakon goes shopping.

"Just remember that the fire was started by a vial with Vorstag and Grine's label on it. Plus when we searched Vorstag and Grines place we found a cabinet full of deformed and grotesque skins hanging up. One of them was an 8 foot tall Mongrelman that could easily have been confused with Andrew."

As the trial nears Gaarm stands and clears his plate, ready to head over to the trial.

Naxx finishes his performance If it was allowed to begin with and joins his companions once more

"Do we have a plan on what to do next? Because to be honest..I haven't got the faintest notion on how to proceed."

@Naxx: I'm not keeping track of the inn costs, but sure! You successfully get a free round of ales for the table!

The bartender comes over the table and drops off five mugs of ale. A distinctly smaller-handled one with adornments of Chaldira and the halfling gods is placed in front of Nizvit, but the mug itself is much larger.

"Sorry. All we got for your tiny hands." the bartender says with a shrug. "Consider them on the house as that guy's performance was decent."

Zakon:
The man's eyes raise at the offering of services, however the gruff and antagonistic nature of Zakon will probably mean that no one will call unless it is a suicide mission. At least, that is the sense he gets as the man doesn't even take down the offer.

The group heads to the market after finishing their free beers. After a few freely flung insults, the majority of market-goers begins to give a wide berth to the repugnant tiefling.

As Zakon picks up the golden broach, the man eyes Zakon warily until he puts it back down. "Nah, and if you ain't gonna buy, then vamoose. You're scaring away customers." he says as he nods to the people eyeing the tiefling and the distinct lack of people in a 10' radius of the man.

At Elred's, the group enters and finds the scraggly owner relaxing behind the counter, he toys with a few magical flames in his hands as his feet are kicked up on the tabletop.

As you walk in, he leaps to his spry feet and dusts off his dirty tunic. The presentation of the amulet catches his eye. "Ah... Vudrani make, but not very strong." he says as he moves over to a bin and begins to toss about old necklaces. "Can upgrade you..." he mutters before finding a new amulet set with a six-point star-shaped emerald set in bronze. "12,000 pieces of your finest gold if you want something better. I can even add a few extras if you got something more." With your keen eye, you notice that the amulet is a +1 Bewildering Amulet of Mighty Fists.

The man pushes aside a few other pieces and pulls out a silver cross adorned with five diamonds, one in the center and one at each point, replete with gold filigree. "Same price for this." he adds as you examine it, finding a Ghost Touch Menacing Amulet of Mighty Fists.

"As for your fists, go find an armorer or pick up some scraps of metal near the smith. Mundane equipment is much to mundane." he says with a blase attitude.

Why must everyone treat me so? All I do is think of others, and try to do the right thing, but all they see are horns and a demon spawn.

"My good man, you drive a hard but fair bargain. And I must say, these pieces are perfect. I am in the market to buy, but my Companions and I have entered a financial arrangement and for a purchase this large, I must clear it with them.

"Did you know that the owners of the Chymic Works have fled the city? I owe them something so I was hoping that you knew something about it. I am quite handy with dangerous chemicals and have half a mind to buy the Works and set up my own shop.

While at the table with Zakon and Gaarm whenquestions of anatomy came up. I assure you that I was sent back anatomically appropriate for my new form. after saying this she gives them both a slight nod and then goes back to her beer, won from by efforts of Naxx.

While Zakon goes on his shopping trip, Lady Eleanor continues her discussion with Gaarm, planning the next day's testimony. I did not think of the skin suit connection. Perhaps there is something to it. I will ask for the suits to be placed in evidence for the morning.

After preparing her case and asking for trvskins to be placed in evidence, Lady Eleanor will go looking for people she can help by means of her magic. She goes out of her way to help children, mending a scrapped arm, a broken toe and a bruised back if she can find them. Will use as many as 3 clw and 2 cmw on whomever I can find to help. Gaarm continues to spend the entirety of his morning with Lady Eleanor. He wants to make sure that their testimony is solid as only a single one from their group is able to speak. Maybe that is for the best. An man with anger issues, a tiefling that scares the townfolk almost as much as Andrew. A simple minded kobold too afraid to make friends, and another man too focused on entertainment and free drinks than anything else.

As Lady Eleanor branches off to help a few sick he claps her on the shoulder. "I'll go get the skins and bring them to the 'lawyer'. Let him know to add them into evidence." Gaarm runs off to get it all done in time for the trial this morning.

@Gaarm: The Cabinet and the Chymic Works are now under the jurisdiction of Lepidstadt, thus you cannot retrieve them, however they will be present for the trial.

@Zakon: I mean, you rolled a 12 with a +8 modifier!

@Sir Thomas: Usual practice then?

As Zakon barters with the man holding the appetizing amulets, Sir Thomas departs and begins to tend to the sick and wounded of Lepidstadt. Her touch cleanses the people of the town with ease and begins to instill the power of Arshea into the zeitgeist of this Ustalavan city. She earns a good amount of public favor by exercising her formidable healing powers on the general townsfolk with asking for recompense.

@Sir Thomas: +1 to all Diplomacy checks in Lepidstadt or when dealing with residents of Lepidstadt.

I assume you are going to sell the loot at the aforementioned prices listed in Discussion and the scrimshaw scroll. Should we move on to the third day?

Usual practice :)
Having spent the better part of the afternoon amongst the townsfolk, she begins to have a better understanding of the town. It's not that these people are very much different from anyone else. They have simply led a much grimmer life than most, and these murders have really shook them. Parents care for their children, and desire greatly for any threat against their children to be done away with, no matter how irrational it may seem. To turn their hearts, Lady Eleanor must show that "the beast" is no threat. Only then will he have peace.

The group spends the evening looking over the pile of gold that they have accumulated as Lady Eleanor returns from the streets, looking much less holy as she expended most of her abilities on the townsfolk.

---The Next Day!---

9:00 a.m.: The final day of the Trial of the Beast begins. Chief Justice Khard raps his gavel twice and speaks in his gravelly voice. "After the events of last night at the jail, I will remind you lot of the penalties of violence." he says as he brandishes his hammer at the people in the seats beyond. "Mobs do not rule Lepidstadt and your actions to try and harm a suspected criminal are a tarnish on all of Lepidstadt."

"Your family and friends who were arrested last night will be punished appropriately and let it be a warning. If you interrupt today, I will clear the entire court and have the offender whipped out of town." he informs the townsfolk. He then requests the prosecution to describe the alleged events at Sanctuary.

9:30 a.m.: Witnesses for the Prosecution. The prosecution details the arson attack on the hospital of Sanctuary on Karb Isle 4 months ago. Otto alleges that the Beast set fire to the building, murdering Doctor Brada and his patients in the process, and states that only Brada’s loyal assistant Karl survived. Otto calls Karl to the stand to give his evidence.

12:30 p.m.: Witnesses for the Defense. Gustav calls Lady Eleanor to present any evidence they found at Sanctuary.

"Please, Lady Eleanor." he says as he ushers you up to the chair that you are familiar with.

He smiles at Zakon as he brings a finger to his lips and taps his blade while nodding at Andrew, hoping the Tiefling understood his meaning on protecting the Giant if the town came after him on their own. Hopefully Lady Eleanor's words would ring true in the space between their ears as he awaits her speech while uncomfortably shifting in his chair.

Taking her seat once more, Lady Eleanor begins her line of testimony.
We investigated the fire involving Dr Brada and his patients. While at the scene of the crime we came across a vial from Volkstags and Grimes. A seemingly insignificant clue but a small piece that you will soon see fits neatly into the greater puzzle. Dr Brada had as his patients deformed humans. We saw their remains in the hospital. As many of you may or may not know we discovered a series of heinous crimes committed by none other than the same Volkstag and Grine. We caught them in the act of skinning another person alive. Upon further investigation we discovered a closest full of skins, hanging there as if ready for wear. If we could please have them brought in as evidence. Once the cart is brought in, As you will see, contained among them is this particular one. A large deformed man. Where did they get this skin from? The most logical place is from the hospital. If Volkstag and Grime wanted this skin, they would need to cover the evidence of their crimes. What better way then a fire? And if they do indeed wear these skins, why not put one on and have "the beast" blamed? In fact why not use such a disguise to cover up all your crimes? What is more is we actually saw Volkstag, wearing a skin in this manner. When we fought humans he was hit with acid, the skin he was wearing fell off. How terribleof them to use such a ruse to blame others for their actions. The final piece that ties this all together is the skinned face found with the coracle. Every place where "the beast" had alegedly commited a crime, there was evidence of skinning or Volkstag and Grines. It appears that there has been quite a deception, a deception in blood and skin, had it not been discovered, "the beast" or Andrew, would merely be another victim, another casualty of the crimes of Volkstag and Grimes.

It takes every bit of effort, but Zakon bites his lips as Lady Eleanor describes the atrocities committed by Vorkstag and Grines on him.

Zakon wants to stand up and shout, "Those bastards CUT .. OFF .. MY .. SKIN .. while I was ALIVE .. and LAUGHED. NONE of you KNOW WHAT that is LIKE!" punctuating each exclamation by banging his fist into his open palm, staring at the judges first, followed by the populace of Lepidtasdt.

But he just sits in silence, waiting until the trial is finished and he can resume his hunt for the skinstealer and dark creeker, silently thinking what a great job Lady Eleanor is doing.

I'll get up a post tomorrow! Prepare for the end of the trial!

As Lady Eleanor presents her case, the judges seem to listen, but are not surprised by the statement, though the stretching of the facts to fit a pre-ordained narrative is a bit much for them. They appear unconvinced from Naxx's point-of-view on the matter as Judge Khard announces that deliberations will take place and their decision will be handed down in an hour.

The court waits with baited breath as the three judges leave and quickly erupts into hushed arguments over the evidence, leading some to speculate as to the outcome.

--One hour later--

The judges reconvene the court and the gavel raps three times, allowing Judge Khard to quiet the crowd. "We will now hand down the verdict."

"On the first count of the murders at Morast, we find the defendant guilty." he says as the crowd's eyes go wide, though they don't dare make noise.

"On the second count of the deaths of the children of Hergstag, we find the defendant innocent." Judge Khard says with a nod to the party.

"On the third count of the arson of the Sanctuary and the death of Dr. Brada, we find the evidence presented by the prosecution inconclusive, thus the Beast is cleared of the last two charges." he states plainly.

The crowd starts to erupt in anger and panic as Judge Khard bangs his gavel twice more. "Order! Order!" he yells as the crowd quiets down. "As the Beast was found responsible for the murders in Morast and is guilty of violently breaking into the University, it has been decided that the Beast shall be taken to the Punishing Man at dawn tomorrow, where it shall be burned to death, and may Pharasma have mercy upon its soul, if it has such a thing.” he says as the crowd seems to be satisfied with the result, dispersing tension. The childlike mind of the Beast in the cage doesn't seem to understand the gravity of the results of the trial and remains unperturbed as it plays with itself, appearing to be playing with imaginary toys as it makes very little noise, likely sound effects of whatever it is imagining.

Chief Justice Khard raps his gavel once. "Court is dismissed." he says before the trio of judges head to their quarters, giving the crowd the freedom to leave.

Being on the wrong end of justice all too many times, Zakon shakes his head in resignation.

"Though the court made its decision, there are still possibilities." Zakon twirls one of his many wires before deftly putting it away before anyone can see. "Up to you all, honestly I feel bad, but I would much rather be on the trail of Vorkstag and Grine. I got a good lead in the market and I would like to follow up as quickly as possible."

Zakon ends his proposal by shrugging his shoulders before adding, "Lady Thomas, Gaarm, little guy that throws fire, you all should be proud of what you did here. You tried hard to save a life, but tomorrow is promised to no one. To save his life when the populace thinks how they think, and feels how they feel, he never would have gotten a fair shake. Want my opinion, let's quit while we are ahead before it is me or him" Zakon thumbs at Nizvit "Hanging from a cage. This isn't the most enlightened place I've been"

The courtroom quickly empties as Zakon and Gaarm express their feelings. Lady Eleanor, Naxx and Nizvit are oddly quiet. After a few minutes, they are the last five left in the room after the cage is lowered through a trapdoor into the jail below.

As the group realizes that they are alone, they can hear the sounding of church bells ringing out across Lepidstadt. The town appears to be in celebration.

Do you do anything before the execution at dawn?

Gaarm looks to Zakon and places a comforting hand on Naxx's shoulder.

"Going against the verdict of the court here is serious. If you choose to do so it will be at the risk of your life. The whole town will turn on you and we will more than likely have a bounty out for us. I don't think it would be a good idea." Gaarm seems conflicted. "It is a difficult choice but one we have to go with. We know he is innocent but we can't possibly fight off the entire town and country coming after us. Word will spread and quickly. We did what we could." He says defeated. "May the gods have mercy on their souls."

Gladly accepting Gaarm's support, Zakon nods in Lady Eleanor's direction. "It's her I am worried about. She put forth a noble effort and defended that Andrew chap well, but it is hard to overcome people's ingrained perceptions, as that little fire thrower and I can attest to.

"You speak wisdom Gaarm, I pray Pharasma takes him gently to the great beyond. I know that I will get no such respite in death. Perhaps we should lay low a bit, until the deed is done. I know that these public executions can rouse people's emotions and I would hate to have them remember that we worked so hard to free one they thought was guilty from the onset.

"Any interest in following my lead on Vork and Grine? Or do you all have other plans. I feel like we should stick together for the near future." Zakon looks darkly around, eyes wary for possible vigilantes who wish to take matters into their own hands against he and his new friends.

Lady Eleanor will spend some time with Andrew explaining what one can expect after death. She will use her time to explain her recent experience and how life after death is not always that bad. She will explain how he will get a fair trial before Pharasma.

Overhearing Zakon speak of his own fate after death she will ask, Life here is short, if you wish to improve your place in the next one, I can help you with that. I doubt you have done anything that can not be undone. You don't have to be perfect, but it will take a little effort. I don't want to scare you, but if you think what Volkstag and Grimes did was bad. They have very little on the denizens of the lower planes. It's just and offer, and it will always stand. Walking with the group, trying to keep their mind off of what is happening, Zakon is grateful for the conversation. "Lady, I am curious by nature and tend to look critically at all the different viewpoints offered. It would be wonderful if you could enlighten me on your particular beliefs, and how I could benefit from them. For what good is religion if it doesn't offer you some sort of advantage, in this life or the next?"

Andrew looks at Lady Eleanor with child-like eyes as the changeling attempts to explain death to the giant construct with infantile understanding of the world. "Andrew, no be Andrew anymore?" he asks with a hint of fear in his voice. A tiny ripped and stained teddy bear is clutched in his gargantuan hands as he asks this.

Gaarm moves to sell goods after the party confers and asks about spikes and klars, finding a few Ulfen merchants. "Aye, I can get you some klars. Maybe a magical one if ya like. Spikes? Mithril, you say? Potentially, see me tomorrow on both." he says solemnly as he gladly exchanges with Gaarm for the rest of the purchases.

---

Zakon stays wary, but it seems like with the verdict, the vigilantism has calmed and the streets are filled with rejoicing. Several inns are advertising free beer and the merchants are selling commemorative items to celebrate the execution the next morning.

With Zakon, After death we are all judged. There are two main factors to this judgement. The first is who you have chosen to worship in life. If you have chosen a deity and your actions come close to aligning with theirs, your soul will end up with that deity in the great beyond. If you do not worship a deity or if you act in ways very dissimilar from your deity, you usually end up on a plane based on your actions. This is not so much a belief as it is an observable fact. While there are niche cases where souls can end up in the wrong spot, for the most part they end up where they should. A person really does determine their fate based on their actions. I have never personally been to the lower planes, but I have read first hand accounts. They are places of torment. The upper planes, on the other hand are generally places of happiness. For those who tend more towards chaos, a plane of roiling energy awaits them. For those who tend towards order, a sprawling city plane filled with libraries and perfect order. For those who are conflicted inside or whom do not have tendencies one way or another, end up in the spire. Most who end up here are able to pursue things that they pursued in life, but without the worries of time. If you arrived here you could pursue alchemy in an idealized alchemical shop. Perhaps, with time you would acquire some level of renown and people would travel the planes to come and learn from you or purchase your wares. You don't need to be a saint to improve your lot in the next life. But doing a little good and a repentant heart can help offset anything you have already done.

With Andrew You will always be Andrew. Not even death can take that away. It just brings changes, and not all bad. uh wait he is a construct? Did we know that?

Gaarm smiles at the Ulfen merchant. "It is a special one I am looking for. I will see you tomorrow."

Gaarm returns and begins to ponder. How will I know for sure if it is the right one I need to destroy?

Is there a way for Gaarm to recognize it or would I need to bring Nizvit and Lady Eleanor to identify they cursed spikes?

Gaarm slowly begins to make his way back to the Inn where the others await as he spends his evening eating in somber silence and a very unrestful sleep as he lies awake most of the night wondering if he is doing what is right in his heart.

@Gaarm: You would recognize it, but you also think others might recognize the spikes if they have a cursory knowledge of magical items, so asking about them specifically might be of some use rather than merely asking about iron maiden spikes in general.

@Sir Thomas: Two things: 1) Andrew is a construct with sentience. It may be hard to tell without closer inspection, but he is loosely based off of Frankenstein. 2) I appreciate the dedication to your character, but that wall of dialogue text is really hard to read. In the future, I recommend adding some non-dialogue text (as we talked about) to break up the bolded text and make it easier to read. Actions that you take while you explain, bodily movements or even observations of what is happening around you as you speak.

Also, it appears that the group is ready to move on, but no one has said much to that effect. So I am moving on to the execution.

---

The group spends the somber night in silence as they sleep and prepare for the morning. The Saviors of Harrowstone are greeted with the blaring of trumpets and the cheering of the patrons of the inn as the hustle and bustle of everyone wakes the group.

Heading downstairs in the twilight before dawn, you see that the dining room and the rest of the first floor are packed with residents as they are wolfing down food and grabbing treats and drinks to go as large swaths of people head towards the center of town. You estimate that you have about an hour before dawn and the execution.

With Lady Eleanor

"I see." he nods in understanding. "I was not aware what an impact that our current situation has on our life after death. As for who I play homage to, why Asmodeus the arch devil himself, like most of my countrymen." Zakon removes the holy symbol and shows the holy warrior. "So what shall my fate be?" he asks sincerely.

The morning of the execution

Mixing his concoctions together once again, pouring over his spellbook, Zakon cannot seem to accomplish his daily routines with his usual vigor. A bit of spilled powder here, some toppled ink, and finally Zakon gives up.

Opening his door, he sees his companions mustering in the hallway. "Morning." he mumbles as his face mirrors his feelings. "Well I can honestly say this sucks.

"Where are you all headed? To the execution? Thinks that is wise? I have seen these before, crowd whipped up to a frenzy, emotions running high, they already dislike us, well most of us. Sure you want to do this? That Andrew lad won't remember if your there or not.

"But if you insist in this folly, I owe it to you all to accompany you. After that I need to hit the market to acquire some new equipment. I can't help but feel this town is not done with us yet."

Running a hand through his long hair, Zakon pulls a bright red ribbon from his pack and ties his hair out of his face before adjusting his magical amulet.
