Evening, ladies and gentlemen.
Have you ever wanted to roll up a character, jump into an unknown world, and start exploring? Danger lurks around every corner. Your survival is not guaranteed. But, if you are able to return safely, your name will go down in history as a legendary adventurer. Of course, you may also be eaten by a bugbear on your first day out.
I’m currently running another PbP campaign here, but this one would be almost completely opposite of that. In the People’s campaign, the game is based around the players, what they want, and what their characters want. This is a game focused on the world, not the characters. It is in the style of Ben Robbin’s West Marches.
You take your roles as adventurers, seeking long-lost treasures and myth, arriving in the border town of Fallsvale. Fallsvale is the westernmost town in the civilized world, because no one dares venture beyond it. In ancient times, the Eternal Horizons, as these distant lands are called, were populated and civilized with all manner of man and beast. But, eons ago, a blight wiped out humanity. The land quickly became feral, teeming with dangers, and the treasure and lore of the Horizon was lost. Recently, however, adventurers (you!) have begun to venture forth to explore and unearth the secrets of the Eternal Horizon.
Here is a list of “fluffy” rules:
There is no fixed plot. The adventure is exploration.
There is no fixed party. The characters venture forth with whomever they choose.
There is no adventure in town or anywhere else but in the Eternal Horizons.
There is no guarantee of survival. If you wander into something for which you are not prepared, you will die.
I, the GM, am not on any faction’s team. I will make all rolls in the open, and the dice, combined with your decisions, will determine your fates.
Any information that is gained about the Horizon will be from characters who have returned alive.
Here is a “crunchy” translation of those rules plus some others:
There will be a pool of, say, 15 players, each with a character, and the players will determine if and when and with whom to make a foray into the wild.
There will be a maximum of 3 parties of at most 4 players at any given time.
Each expedition will last no longer than 4 weeks real life time, at which point the characters must immediately return to town.
The discussion an gameplay portions of this thread are dedicated to “The Tavern” where characters and player can make parties, chat about adventures, and do a little characterization.
This recruitment thread will stay open for the foreseeable future, since player may leave, take breaks, or disappear. I will “bump” this thread any time there is an opening.
Each player may have 1 active character at a time.
If a character dies, the player may introduce a new character back in town at ½ the dead character’s level. If a character retires, no gear may be transferred to a new character.
I will set up an obsidian portal wiki to allow players to contribute to the knowledge base. Of course, all knowledge may not be accurate, but I will keep a close watch for trolls spreading malicious lies.
I will never write or edit any game summaries or maps. That must be done by the characters.
The Characters
15 point build
Level 1
Paizo content only
No guns
No traits
Average gold
Max hp 1st level, roll for the rest
Fast experience progression (with mondo-huge bonuses for being the first to discover something)
In order to submit a character, get your alias game-ready. It’s that simple. If you want backstory, do it. If not, just a personality will be enough.
I am very certain that more things will come up soon. Feel free to post questions or comments in the thread, in addition to signing up.

Yes! I remember reading about West Marches for the first time some years ago and thinking how awesome it would be. Count me in; I'll have a character up not long after my finals are over (last one today).
By the way, I really like the "four weeks max" thing. It should keep things rolling pretty well. But I have one concern: what do you plan to do with self-interested parties, lying about their expedition to keep others from raiding a zone of potential interest? Is the Obsidian Portal wiki going to be an in-character compendium of the knowledge gathered from the reports of the various parties, or an out-of-character repository to find accurate information about the land?

@Jelani - Don't care, terribly. As long as it's pathfinder and you're not being a munchkin you can do whatever you want. One of the reasons I wanted to do this is so that people can just try out characters.
@Galrian - Awesome. Glad you have you.
@Tierce - No, but you may not ever, never, ever actively undermine the party in any way. You can be selfish, and even leave them behind, but you can't steal, kill, or destroy any of their possessions nor may you cause general mayhem. Also be aware that you may have trouble finding a group willing to go out with you if you build a reputation of being a stinker.
Now that there are a few folks interested, don't forget to post with your game-ready character to confirm your slot in the game. In my other game, I left for a day, and when I got back, I had a dozen applicants.

Ah @Hurley - ninja'd. The idea is that the wiki would be in character, full of character-made descriptions and potentials error or lies. However, since I just now decided to require that all articles be signed with the name of the character who wrote them, certain characters will surely develop reputations for being accurate and other will not. The in and out of character social aspect is a big part of this game. It's like I said to Tierce, you may have a hard time getting anyone to trust you if you are known for lying.
That being said, how would it be to treat the wiki like a book, and never remove information. If you want to change something, cross it out and write the new thing beneath it. That way, we could have a bit of a history of the exploration of a given site, in addition to bringing a bit of accountability to the guide.

Saxton Quinn |

Yes yes yes Meet Saxton Quinn A Psionic this is what hes life is all about, falling into know worlds knowing nothing, (I can Tweek him to fit your outline, hes in no other game)
Saxton sits in a tavern looking at the drink they say is alcoholic
he has not been her long and he few gems he had seem to pass as money here
so he has a room. But what to do with himself. He hears talk of profit and money to be made scouting out a lost land near here,
well well looks like there may be a way to make a living here after all.

Gaius Vekkhar |

This is Jelani, here is a skeleton of my submission. More will be coming later. Basically an archetypal conqueror (Ceasar, Ghengis Khan, Charlemange, etc), he seeks to subject and bring order to as much of the wilderness as possible.. Crunch-wise just a zen archer, been wanting to try one. Also always wanted to play a hobgoblin.

GM_Jacob |

I have been kicking around some ideas to keep combat moving, since there will be a decent amount of it, and I don't want it sucking up the limited time on expeditions. Instead of individual initiative, I will roll initiative for the party and enemies as groups. During the players' turns, they will be able to post at any time and in any order. Once all the player have posted, or one RL day goes by, I will post all of the enemies actions at once.

Fionnbharanel |

There's no link for me because I'm not a member of the campaign yet - you have to add people I think. My name on OP is 'jafo' if that helps with adding me. I think once you add me to the campaign, I can create a character, though like you, I don't know how that works exactly - I've only ever been a player on OP, not a GM.

Saxton Quinn |

spuglyfuglt is my new OP username
GM under the "comments" Tab in OP users can leave requests to join the game, I have done one to show, an OP user dos not need to be have been made a subscriber to the game too do this. I would ask that any one who wants to be considered should post one line there stating there OP account name.

Rosa Luminass |

nope Rosa is LN all the way, and the other Tef is a Two weapon user Fighter where as Rosa is a Great sword using Cleric, not a lot of overlap that is if you think having elves is overlap etc. GM could I drop Saxton and Submit Rosa, I think she will fit better in the game place and as a Cleric may be of use more. Thanks GM if you need me to place Saxton (but note the PC sheets do not support Sonic that I can see so that may be a none starter) in I will but for now Ill go with Rosa if I may.

Ira Oniborn |

Presenting Ira, because we need more chaos in here. I have most stats finished but not in the alias yet, things are looking rather tiefling heavy already, but hopefully in different parties it wont be a huge deal, and this one is neutral aligned with a burning hatred for those of demon/devil blood... I was thinking that we could get a more chaotic party going with Wildmane and Fion, but apparently despite his name Tensen Wildmane is Lawful >.> Also as a wild rager Ira is somewhat dangerous, so traveling with her is a risk.
EDIT: Username on OP is Jehova.

Tensen Wildmane |

... I was thinking that we could get a more chaotic party going with Wildmane and Fion, but apparently despite his name Tensen Wildmane is Lawful >.>
Psht, wild and chaotic are two very different things :) The lawful nature only comes from his ideal of "survive or die". Natural selection and all that jazz.
Commented on the OP, add me please!

Rosa Luminass |

@ Gaius Vekkhar O it looks like the Hell's will have a large showing in the undiscovered lands, bringing law to the lawless lands. and with Mierra Jayde we scould have a LN band v other CG ones seeking the goodys, now that would be fun, Food fights in the Inn. Raso dos not care about good and evil, they are temporary perspective points and a diversion from the great conflict between law that holds reallity together and the fromless mad dreams of chaos that would end all sanity. Only the Iron rule of the mind matters.
Rosa is up and in the Inn, Blessed be the rule of law.
GM if your happy with Rosa I can move could you let me know tanks
By the fire sits a well dressed she Devil, she eating a fine dish for raw fish and a olives, with a simle but well made set of silver shop sticks. By her side sits a huge grate sword. she pays no heed to any other in the room and from time to time looks into the fire, as she dos so the fine Lattice work of tattoos on her skin seem to slow shift into a new pattern, hold then slowly shift again.

Loomy character sits in the corner of tavern reading through his book in a candle light. Wearing dark black dress itched with runes and materials on the corner and sleeves, he goes through the ancient journal.
Finally, I have arrived here. Now I just need to find partners to find out the treasures out in the wild and learn of my powers... heh, what a perfect opportunity grins and advances on the next page. Occasionally sipping from his mug and looking around for potential members.
Getting up and stretching there was a reflection from his belt as the candle light revealed and was reflected from the dagger. A strange odor was surrounding him: flowers, mud, grass, charcoal... the basic inqredients of wizards. Sitting and continueing his reading Amar kept looking around for potential people... or meatshields in other words
Basic crunch of Amar

Rosa Luminass |

GM,
Hi GM Rosa is done both on here and OP, I dropped the re-roll Fiendish heritage as it would me just to much going hassle in game play, and switched it for Odd anatomy let you use Use large Weapons, and made her grate sword Large, with the down side she uses nothing but it. If and when she gets some gold she may add magic (awaken the hell blade) but she will use only this one sword as her only weapon from here on in.
I do hope you like Rosa she is a lot of fun in a game
PS
Sorry for any spelling or Grammar Mistakes I am dyslexic.
