Edwin presents The Fires of Zatal an adventure through the lands of Maztica

Game Master Insnare

Maztica is
very different from the Realms.an alien land, a world in transition,
showing the first influences of the mores and culture of the Realmsian cultures. Its ancient nations are giving way to new empires and new threats. Once, monstrous creatures
were few and far between; since the Viperhand creatures were
introduced, the land becomes ever more like the Realms.

indeed it is common Meri doesn't know that many languages herself

M Maztican

Otzali speaks common to the party......and Payit with Ik'Skull when we want to talk ABOUT the party. :)

Shot Putter Funkmeister

From out of the forest in response to Otzali's question, two large Maztican treants step from out of cover and say in Pezalic

Spoiler:
"Young jaguar it is a pleasure for us to see someone such as yourself leading these strange foreigners through OUR jungles. The Easterners are not to be trusted."

M Maztican

which I now realize he does not speak...

Ik' Skull come up behinds Otzali and offers to help with translation.

Nexalian aka bad Pezalic, or Payit:
"Greetings honored spirits of the true world, and I wish you well as you make your new home. We travel to the Valley of Nexal on a quest to retrieve a treasure of Qotal - the Cloak of the One Plume, and wish to pass through your home. I know that many of the Easterners are unaware of our ways, but there is evil and good in all people. Some of the good folk - that magic-man Orren Patrizi for instance - are good at heart and wish to trade for information Is there some useful knowledge of the Valley you may share, and something we may tell you or give you in return?

She begins an extended appeal to the treants, punctuated by a gesture towards Orren. "I have related your request, Master Patrizi. I will tell you if they agree."

Shot Putter Funkmeister

Payit from Treant 1

Spoiler:
"You folks come from our east as well, which does indeed make sense considering your company but you never know if the True world is getting truer or falser. Hmm the valley of Nexal, well our kind aren't welcome there due to the harshness of the climate, it doesn't get enough rain, no rain no forests or jungles and the mighty trees are lacking. Well, you show the proper deference to the royalty of the forest and we shall request no gift but if you are feeling generous our child shall be born within the fortnight, would you happen to have any hrishna or plume for him or her to play with as a young sapling?"

Hp 9/9 AC 2 Paralyze/Poison 10 (+4), Rod/Staff/Wand 14 (+4), Petrify/Polymorph 13, Breath Weapon 16, Spells 15 (+4) Surprise +2

Merisiel stands in awe and amazement as she looks at the great tree like creatures

Payit:
I will make him as fine a Plume as any ever made! It would be my honor!

The Payit woman translates.

"They know not of the regions to the West, but are willing to let us pass their home. Know that they are with child, and ask if we have things made of our own hands for their child. If you wish to give joy to one of the great new spirits of the forest, perhaps you would be wise to consider their request, friends."

Male Human Magic User 1

Orren shrugs, "I have very little with me, perhaps a silk rope I could part with, is that something they would find useful Ik' Skull?"

"Does a child need a rope? A magic trinket or a piece of art would be better, if you can make such a thing."

Male Human Magic User 1

"Given more time perhaps but I have no such thing with me and no magic to work such wonders".

Hp 9/9 AC 2 Paralyze/Poison 10 (+4), Rod/Staff/Wand 14 (+4), Petrify/Polymorph 13, Breath Weapon 16, Spells 15 (+4) Surprise +2

Here it can have my spoon it's dwarven crafted she says looking trough her pack

pluma! Weaving: 1d20 ⇒ 20 vs under 13

Ik' Skull pulls her latest pluma, only to find the weather has ruined it.

"A spoon it is then..."

Shot Putter Funkmeister

Treant 2

Spoiler:
"Sometimes Qotal doesn't smile upon the plume, no matter. We don't drink from containers but straight from the soil. There is an abandoned human city due west of here that you may be interested in. Farewell."

The two treants walk off enjoying the warm day in their jungle.

"Interesting city. There said there is a forgotten city to the West of here. Perhaps we should investigate this place?"

M Maztican
Ik' Skull wrote:
"Know that they are with child, and ask if we have things made of our own hands for their child."

"I cannot perform Hishna yet. I've made obsidian weapons but they might not be a good gift......"

Otzali bows deep as the treants take their leave, making a mental note to have a better gift ready when they return this way.

"Don't want to delay the quest, but I am curious to see this place."

Male Human Magic User 1

Orren shrugs, "If the rest of you are interested. Perhaps it is a place we can rest out of the elements for a night as well".

Shot Putter Funkmeister

You travel some more until you decide to make camp for the evening.

Don't forget to mark off your rations.

GM Rolls

Spoiler:
Meri 1d100 ⇒ 13 1d6 ⇒ 1 1d20 ⇒ 13

You wake up and start heading west and after about an hour you start to hear the loud chirping of monkeys in the tress above you.

Hp 9/9 AC 2 Paralyze/Poison 10 (+4), Rod/Staff/Wand 14 (+4), Petrify/Polymorph 13, Breath Weapon 16, Spells 15 (+4) Surprise +2

Well if i keep giving my stuff away soon i am going to be all out of stock for the mundane items. We hare in no hurry and there is no timetable so lets see this abandoned city. I am of coursed interested she says having fun en really enjoying this True world

is this how it works, giving items and plums to people ? she ask Why plums anyway ? and what is Hisna ?

Male Human Magic User 1

Orren looks up to see what the monkeys are doing, he has little experience with the creatures.

"How far did the Treant's say this "Lost" city was?"

Ik' Skull blushes. "They did not say, and I lacked the foresight to ask." She looks up about her. "I wonder what disturbs those in the trees?." She pulls out her bow instinctively.

Animal lore. What might disturb the monkeys?: 1d20 ⇒ 5 vs. under 14

If nothing else seems amiss I might just shoot one. They're reputed to be pretty tasty...

Hp 9/9 AC 2 Paralyze/Poison 10 (+4), Rod/Staff/Wand 14 (+4), Petrify/Polymorph 13, Breath Weapon 16, Spells 15 (+4) Surprise +2

Merisiel will lower her voice Even if the trees didn't give us good direction we can try to find the ruined city on our own she says looking up toward the sound of the noise

Shot Putter Funkmeister

Ik'Skull

Spoiler:
howler monkeys will send
up a chorus of loud hooting
screeches if disturbed or attacked.
The hooting is deafening close at
hand, and carries for miles

"Everything for a half-days walk knows we are here - perhaps the monkeys were lured here for the warnings they give. We should be on our guard - we may face danger soon."

Hp 9/9 AC 2 Paralyze/Poison 10 (+4), Rod/Staff/Wand 14 (+4), Petrify/Polymorph 13, Breath Weapon 16, Spells 15 (+4) Surprise +2

Understood. let's resume our walk toward this lost city we were told about not so long ago

M Maztican

Animal Lore: 1d20 ⇒ 20 BOOM!

"The jungles of the True World are always alive with sounds and life." He glances at the two Realmsians. "Nothing will ever change that."

In contrast to his confident words Otzali checks his maca again, confirming it is ready to draw at any moment.

Shot Putter Funkmeister

Later that day, the trail through the jungle
widens, and becomes smoother, eventually becoming a full-blown
sacbe, a paved road leading through the jungle. The road is
long disused, and vines have already crept up through the
stonework, but the way is easier ahead. In the distance stands a
cluster of buildings, dominated by a tall pyramid on the far side
of stream.

Hp 9/9 AC 2 Paralyze/Poison 10 (+4), Rod/Staff/Wand 14 (+4), Petrify/Polymorph 13, Breath Weapon 16, Spells 15 (+4) Surprise +2

look it's here, its here she says gleefuly

M Maztican

While the road is obviously in disuse, Otzali kneels down to examine the area for tracks. Wonder if we're the only ones who have been through here.......

he doesnt actually have tracking, but.....
Hunting: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (7) - 1 = 6 vs 15, hoping that knowing about stalking prey taught him maybe a little about looking for signs of prey?

ok, Im reaching, but worth a shot!

Shot Putter Funkmeister

Otzali

Spoiler:
You can see the tracks of mice and the like leading up to the stream probably to drink and then back into the forest. You cannot get a good handle on the other side.

Hasoctl says, "We should probably go around. I don't like the looks of this place."

Ironspike says, "I wouldn't mind checking it out."

"The forest spirits thought it would be of interest to us. It bears investigation, at the very least."

Male Human Magic User 1

Is Hasoctl a Native while Ironspike a Realmsian and what are there Races? Cannot remember.

"I would normally agree Hasoctl but it seems we have decided to come this way just to enter the place. We must now do so together".

Orren attempts to speak in Payit,

Ik'skull:
"Danger here?"

He grins at the natives as he attempts to speak the language for the first time.

Shot Putter Funkmeister

Yes, yes and they are both humans

Hasoctl shrugs and says "As you wish"

How do you want to cross the river?"

Hovercraft? Is it very deep? If so, we could toss a rope and shimmy across

M Maztican

how far can we see up or down river? any chance theres a bridge somewhere within view? or a natural ford we can see?

Hp 9/9 AC 2 Paralyze/Poison 10 (+4), Rod/Staff/Wand 14 (+4), Petrify/Polymorph 13, Breath Weapon 16, Spells 15 (+4) Surprise +2

Great lets look for a place to cross Meri will let those killed find a safe place to cross even if that means we have to walk for awhile to look for a place were we can walk across and not have to swim

Shot Putter Funkmeister

The water is about 5ft deep and there is no place that is better, there are low hanging trees, so you can walk through, try to climb the trees and then jump across or something else.

Ik' Skull will try and climb and jump. What sort of roll do you want me to make?

Male Human Magic User 1

Before she does so, Orren will tie a rope to her in case we need to haul her back in.

Shot Putter Funkmeister

I need a dexterity check

Hp 9/9 AC 2 Paralyze/Poison 10 (+4), Rod/Staff/Wand 14 (+4), Petrify/Polymorph 13, Breath Weapon 16, Spells 15 (+4) Surprise +2

Since it is only 5 feet deep Meri will take her time to remove her armor and cross on foot.

Ik' Skull nimbly jumps from branch to branch, confident in her footing.

"See friends, it is simple to cross"

1d20 ⇒ 3 against Dex 18

Shot Putter Funkmeister

GM Rolls:

Spoiler:
1d4 ⇒ 3

Merisiel walks into the water and makes it about halfway through and then the water starts to bubble.
Piranha 1 1d20 ⇒ 20 hit 2d2 ⇒ (2, 1) = 3
Piranha 2 1d20 ⇒ 15 hit 1d2 ⇒ 2
Piranha 3 1d20 ⇒ 8 miss
Piranha 4 1d20 ⇒ 5 miss
Piranha 5 1d20 ⇒ 2 miss
Piranha 6 1d20 ⇒ 1 miss
Piranha 7 1d20 ⇒ 11 miss
Piranha 8 1d20 ⇒ 19 hit 1d2 ⇒ 2
Piranha 9 1d20 ⇒ 3 miss
Piranha 10 1d20 ⇒ 10 miss
Piranha 11 1d20 ⇒ 7 miss
Piranha 12 1d20 ⇒ 7 miss
Piranha 13 1d20 ⇒ 11 miss
Piranha 14 1d20 ⇒ 19 hit 1d2 ⇒ 1
Piranha 15 1d20 ⇒ 1 miss
Piranha 16 1d20 ⇒ 8 miss
Piranha 17 1d20 ⇒ 17 hit 1d2 ⇒ 1
Piranha 18 1d20 ⇒ 10 miss
Piranha 19 1d20 ⇒ 9 miss
Piranha 20 1d20 ⇒ 12 hit 1d2 ⇒ 1

Merisiel is devoured by the piranha leaving the black water a slight hue of reddish black.

Meri please roll me up a new Maztican character.

M Maztican

no chance that animal lore check would have told otazi of the danger in time to warn her? She did need time to take off her armor ....

Shot Putter Funkmeister

That was a hunting check not a fishing check

M Maztican

dang, I posted an animal lore check asking about dangers in the river right after Meri's post, don't see it above so in guessing the Boards ate it. Sorry meri!

Male Human Magic User 1

Double score for the post monster!

Orren looks on in horror as Meri is devoured. The spell he would have cast dies on his lips as he knows there is nothing he could do to save her.

Orren looks to the tree crossing that Ik'Skull accomplished, "I have a bad feeling about that..."

As my Armor spell absorbs damage, if I happen to fall in I would at least have some chance of getting out alive no?

Dexterity Check 1d20 ⇒ 16 vs. Dex 12.

Guess we will need that ruling pretty soon...

Shot Putter Funkmeister

How much damage does it soak up?

GM rolls

Spoiler:
1d4 - 1 ⇒ (1) - 1 = 0

Orren falls after almost making it safely to the other side but slips on the second to last branch and falls in close to the shore and crawls over to the other side with no mishap.

Male Human Magic User 1

I need my 2ed Players Handbook, will update my character sheet tonight so I have the full spell description but I believe it is about 9 points worth.

M Maztican

DEX check vs 15: 1d20 ⇒ 12

Otzali also stares at the water in horror. We are their guides, we should have known.......

Visibility shaken but determined to move forward the warrior follows the same path through the trees as the others did. Clearing the bank he turns to again consider the place where their companion disappeared.

"The True World can be as deadly as it is beautiful. We must remember that."
