Ethendril h'Caramore |
Ethendril jumps down into the hole with a battlecry while slashing at one of the beasts with his blade.
greatsword power attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 152d6 + 9 ⇒ (1, 5) + 9 = 15
sorry for the delay...Sundays are rough for me to find time.

Reflex: 1d20 ⇒ 2; Fail!
Between Ethendril and Agnes, the final creature is singed, sliced, and dispatched! Combat over.
Harlis Underbough |
Harlis nods to his fellow Pathfinders now that the danger has passed for now.
"Well it looks like the collapse may have released some things. Hope it will have triggered any traps or unpleasant surprises". he says while climbing down the rope.
Holding his sword aloft to bring light to the chamber Harlis recovers his dagger goes to have a quick look at the slain creatures and to check the injury that they did for venom.

"I don't like the look of that big statue opposite the door." he mutters while tending the wound. Looking up he questions directly. "Do you wish me to call upon Iomedae's grace? We may need all I can call upon if this is merely the start of what the wizard has left."
Ethendril h'Caramore |
Ethendril nods and begins to look around. "I am confident Iomedae will be with us," he says.
He begins to look around the room for any signs of danger or other clues, then proceeds to the statue.
"I hope this place doesn't come down on top of us," he says.
perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22
Wayreth |
Wayreth also takes a look around, although he is more interested in searching for discarded items that may be of use to the group.
perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16
Wayreth |
Anything from Wayreth's searching around?
If the search of the room yields nothing, Wayreth will start checking the door to the South, unless anyone has other ideas.
perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17
Hotspur the Unsettled |
Hotspur reloads while the party looks around.
Wayreth |
Nothing from merely looking around.
Lol is that a hint? What if Wayreth takes a few minutes to actively search through the debris in the room? XD
Generally, do you require us to actually state when we are taking a minute to search as opposed to taking a quick look around?Nothing special about the door.
Wayreth tests the door handle if there is one, or if not he pushes against it.
GM Engleaktig |
Generally, do you require us to actually state when we are taking a minute to search as opposed to taking a quick look around?
I do not. In this specific case, the module details something you should / would / could not get without stating certain action(s).
:-)
Wayreth |
Facepalm. Thanks for the hint. XD
Wayreth checks the rusted grinning iron statue in the alcove in the North Wall. Specifically looking for traps and some sort of trigger that might open a secret door. Or anything else unusual about it.
perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17
XD
Harlis Underbough |
Harlis watches Ethendril and Wayreth examining the statue while standing in the middle of the room with blade aloft still to cast light over the room. Equipping his shield on the other arm he stands guard while the rest of the group explores options.
GM Engleaktig |
Ethendril, carefully looking around, realizes that, although the walls here seem unstable, they are in no danger of collapsing unless the party starts to pry and dig at the remaining supports.
He also notices that the iron statue in the northern niche is in fact a closed iron maiden—the rust stains on the front are actually ancient bloodstains.
Wayreth opens the iron maiden, causing the last victim's bones to tumble out and uncovering a rusty metal key.
The door at the southern end of this room is locked. The key unlocks it. (Map updated.)
Beyond the locked door, numerous jail cells line these long-abandoned corridors. Each of their solid iron doors hangs ajar, and includes both a peephole at eye level, covered with a piece of sliding metal, and a slot for food and water at floor level.
The secret doors to the south were once much better disguised, but decay has left them poorly hidden.
A curious semicircular stone ridge runs along the ceiling of the hallway. (Indicated by the dotted line.) The ridge is about 6 inches across.
Wayreth |
Just in case, since it appears we need to be quite specific about what we search.
Wayreth does careful search of the beds (and looks under the beds) in the Eastern part of A4 and also checks the, well, fallen masonry in the Western part (take 10 for 16).
He then does the same in each cell in A5.
Finally, he searches the secret doors in A5 for traps, starting with the Eastern-most one (think I'll need to roll this one).
Pereption to search for traps at secret doors: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12
uh-oh
If there are no traps, he will try to open it.
Ethendril h'Caramore |
To be clear, did we just pass through A4 into A7, going under or over A5? Or did we walk out into A5?
Ethendril strokes his beard as he ponders what they have found.
"I wonder what this wizard has been doing in this tower. These implements of torture cause me some concern. Wayreth, what do you make of this stone ridge? Perhaps you should check it out," the paladin suggests as he looks at it himself.
perception take 10: 10 + 6 = 16
Ethendril h'Caramore |
Wanting to avoid the stone ridge until the rogue checks it out, Ethendril moves toward the doors to the east.
He opens the first one to see what is inside.
perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8
Wayreth |
Satisfied with his extensive search (though if there was a trap I probably missed it...), Wayreth turns his attention to the stone ridge.
"I don't think this was the wizard's home. He was in the manor nearby, whereas this fort belonged to the founder of Belhaim. I'm guessing this was his personal dungeon. Damned if I know a thing about architecture though."
Anyone have knowledge architecture?
With that thought in mind, Wayreth nonetheless takes a closer look to see if there is some kind of secret opening somewhere along the stone ridge.
Perception take 10: 10 + 6 = 16
Harlis Underbough |
Harlis follows along to make sure the party is not separated by any large margin.
"There seems to be quite a large amount of dungeon here. I wonder if it extends under the town or only just the tower? " he muses aloud.
Wayreth |
Wayreth takes a long hard look at the chain, then shrugs and tries to give it a pull.
Hotspur the Unsettled |
Hotspur grimaces but being an optimist says: "That sound was probably the plumbing. You know how these old houses are."
Wayreth |
"Only one way to find out,"Wayreth replies with awry grin as he gestures in the direction of the grinding sound.
I'm guessing we go West in any event.
Ethendril h'Caramore |
Ethendril looks back over his shoulder at the room he had opened.
Anything in there?
I had tried to open the door to the east above...if everyone would rather go west, I'm fine with that and will give it a second vote, though.
Wayreth |
Wayreth checks that he has a crossbow bolt safely loaded in his crossbow before following behind, though at a distance, keeping to the shadows...
Harlis Underbough |
Harlis nods in agreement and recasts light upon his blade before following directly behind Ethendril. "This seems the only way." he agrees while peering upwards at the pipe from his short statue.
"The chain does make me uneasy, but it could be this dungeon. A goodly folk wouldn't have implements of torture in a prison." he mentions quietly.
GM Engleaktig |
Ignoring the three secret doors to the south, the party heads west. They come to room A8. The door to this chamber seems stuck. (1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24) But, Ethendril easily wrenches it open.
There can be little doubt what purpose this chamber once served. The dank room stores an ancient rack, a fanciful brazen bull, an iron maiden, a cauldron, iron chairs with sharp edges and cruel protuberances, and a wooden table upon which sit various implements of torture. A bronze plaque affixed to the western wall depicts a crowing rooster above crossed spears. Underneath the spear, a short phrase is inscribed:
"Confession Cleanses the Soul— Pain Clarifies the Mind."
Perception and Knowledge History to know more.
As soon as the door is opened, before any of you can react, a voice says: "You look weary. Rest in one of the chairs provided here."
1d20 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 1 = 16
For a moment, the paladin really wants to sit in one of the cruel iron chairs. Then he shakes it off.
A raven in the room speaks: "Greetings, fine citizens of our glorious empire! So good to have visitors, though I fear I have no refreshments to offer. I assume you are here for the treasure. Well, I'd be happy to assist, provided that you give me what I require! It has been so long since I was able to ply my trade. I require only that each of you shed your life’s blood in this room—simply take a seat in one of my lovely chairs"
It is obvious that the chairs won't kill you. They'll hurt, but not kill.
Ethendril h'Caramore |
Ethendril closes his eyes and tries to determine what kind of adversary they face.
"Something foul is at play here..."
detect evil, focusing 3 rounds
Hotspur the Unsettled |
"I've got a bad feeling about this. But there might not be an alternative."
Wayreth |
"Treasure, you say? Do tell," Wayreth replies to the bird, hoping to coax some information out of it. [b]"If you sufficiently entice us, we might be persuaded to do as you say.
Harlis Underbough |
Thinking the bird is just a foul trickster spirit of some kind Harlis awaits the outcome of either the Ethendril's concentration or Wayreth's entreaties, but is glad to have a blade in hand already.
I believe if a paladin is concentrating on a single thing it's only a move action to get the 3 round response of Detect Evil. The 3 rounds is if he is doing the whole 60' cone before him.
Harlis Underbough |
Seeing Ethendril's reaction to concentrating upon the bird and with its evilly silken words recently stilled Harlis points his lighted sword at the bird.
"Surrender not unto the temptations of evil. They cannot be trusted and it's presence is a canker dwelling beneath the town. It should be purged!" he pronounces looking to his fellows to join him approaching the bird.
"Do not let it escape and beware of the implements of the room."
Hotspur the Unsettled |
"I'm not sure that threatening to torture us counts as a 'temptation.' The whole thing sounds pretty disagreeable, but before I volunteer for this, Mr Bird, tell us why we should bother -- beyond that it would make you happy. What is in it for us?"
Ethendril h'Caramore |
"This is a fairly powerful creature...we must take care how we deal with it," Ethendril whispers to the others.
I'm having a little bit of a hard time reading the detect evil chart. When looking at the "moderate" aura, is the number there the HD of the creature? If so, this creature could be well beyond our level 1 capabilities, no?
