As soon as Astra steps into the room, the air elemental moves up close and sends a barbed tentacle to assault her. Translucent spikes dig into her as the tentacle wraps around her waist.

Everyone's turn. Astra is grappled.
Astra Picard
"Hurgh!" Astra gasps when the air tendril wraps around her and digs into her armor and flesh. "Well, this is...*wheeze* fascinating. I've never seen a substance quite like this. Solid...yet not entirely solid. Is there any chance I could get a sample? I would be willing to pay..." she tells the creature while struggling to try to get free.

We've moved quickly right? bless is still up right?

Liz's magic missiles unerringly hit the creature in its core. Chakos severs a barbed tentacle with his greataxe. Ibuki's magic is resisted by the mihstu.
Syvlara's arrows fly away from the air elemental, except for one, which stabs into its center.

In which case, as it fell I'd sever the life link and:
Paladin Channel: 1d6 ⇒ 6 30' radius, +2 on self
Paladin Channel: 1d6 ⇒ 2 30' radius, +2 on self
Astra is all healed up, and I have 1 hp of damage.

"Ack, ugh, wheeze", Astra spits and coughs for breath, trying to get some air back into her lungs after the tentacle's unsolicited groping. Once her head has cleared a little, she takes a sample container and tries to rush to get some of the cloudy mush into a vial before it disappears entirely. Whether she manages to act quickly enough or not, she then puts the vial away and looks around the room. "Not the best reception I've ever gotten...though not the worst either. I doubt it was the master of this tower though. A servant of Xoud's perhaps. I wonder what's kept it here this long. I didn't see any arcane wards that would have been containing it here. A verbal contract perhaps, then." She frowns, and shakes her head, turning her mind to searching the room.

What's with the little oubliettes on each level? Are those steps in them? We bypassed some of them apparently, and we missed somethings on the first level yes? Do we think there is only one more level?
"Astra, I wasn't sure if getting strangled was part of your negotiation technique, but you looked like help would not be unwelcome."
Astra Picard
"Well, the mihstu didn't seem very receptive to having a civilized conversation, so much as I regret it, it does seem like violence was necessary. I don't know what it is about extradimensional creatures that always makes them think they can take on five-to-one odds. Or more." Pause. "Or less. Or equal." She shrugs. "Perhaps arrogance is some sort of innate trait, a part of their basic psychological makeup in the same way that the survival instinct is in us. Insistence on dying rather than talking is quite the opposite of what I'm used to...I'm more used to people who would rather talk than die. Come to think of it, I'm more used to people who would rather talk than sew, too. Or cook. Or play ball games. Or make those nice little origami cranes that Tien people do -- have you seen those? It's a fascinating little art, actually. Well, calling it an art is doing it a disservice, really, because there are some beautiful mathematical principles at work as well, the cranes often fulfill a number of intricate topological theorems --"
Astra Picard
"Yes, engineering is indeed involved! It's highly precise work! Usually, they're about this size", Astra says, holding her thumb and index finger wide apart, "so I would say that they can lift, maybe, hmm, what should I say -- about one tea bag's worth? Which would be...I would estimate, two grams? Of course, you can scale it up, but then it wouldn't fit into narrow spaces anymore. I would guess that to be sturdy enough to lift something like a sword, you would have to make a reasonably big one, maybe human-sized? Of course, the structural integrity would depend a lot on the paper stock, too."

Those weird rooms look like they just have smoke in them, like giant chimneys. You can do an engineering check, int/wis, or some kind of building check to figure out how much of the tower you have climbed in relation to the remaining tower.
Amid the dwarven bones you find three gems, a garnet worth 500 gp, a sapphire worth 4500 gp and a pale blue rhomboid ioun stone.
GM Demonmoose
Liz, Astra and Ibuki believe you have climbed up about half of the tower.
Chakos opens the door.
The tables and shelves in this large laboratory are all coated with a thin greenish slime. One desk is heaped with pages of notes, and a human skeleton dressed in moldy robes lies slumped over it. A large glass tank atop the easternmost table is shattered and shards of glass litter the floor of the room, while a pale green haze floats in the air.
In the center of the room is a huge greenish fog. Spectral ghosts appear as images within the fog, though you can barely make out some kind of humanoid creature standing within walking slowly towards you.
Battle? Everyone's turn.
Astra Picard
Astra tries to identify the spectral ghosts and humanoid creature.
Knowledge (religion) on ghosts: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (4) + 12 = 16
Knowledge (local) on humanoid: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (17) + 18 = 35
Astra prepares her sword and shield, but does try to speak out. "We mean you no harm. We only come in search of information." She tries to reach the creature(s) verbally. "Please, let us communicate."

Both the fog and the creature inside are evil.
Astra believes the creature inside is an allip. Both Liz and Astra know the fog is actually an ooze called a hungry fog. It can deal negative energy to creatures it engulfs. Astra may have two questions about the hungry fog.
Both the hungry fog and the allip remain silent.
Astra Picard
Special defenses and special attacks.
"This time I'm not going to be the first to step inside", Astra says. "The fog is a sort of negative energy creature -- that is why the allip must have gravitated to it. Negative energy heals the undead. I imagine that it must gain life force every second it spends inside that fog."
Chakos Hyluan
"I have to agree with Liz. Let us close this door, and continue on, saving our strength to fight the master of this tower, rather than allowing all of his minions to weaken us first. After the master is destroyed, we can take our leisure to destroy the minions."
Chakos Hyluan
"It usually is."
Chakos charges in and attacks the fog...

Astra considers buffing the entire group with Good Hope, but decides against it, figuring that maybe it will be more needed later on.
Instead, she moves forward after Chakos, using her ghost touch sword on the fog as well. (Unless the upcoming reply about special defenses makes her reconsider.)
