Campaign maps: Jade Regent | Kingmaker | The Temple of Elemental Evil

In Common Year 579, the village of Hommlet is a peaceful, almost idyllic setting. Located only a few days' walk from the large city of Verbobonc, it is a developing crossroads between that metropolis and Kron. For many years it was primarily a stopping point for merchants traveling between the large cities, but only a few years ago it was the staging ground for a battle against a terrible army of evil humanoids. That army was smashed and the village fell into peaceful slumber once more.

Now, the village is growing. Prosperous farms and tradesfolk enjoy the benefits of living along a well-traveled and protected route, and a pair of successful adventurers, the mage Burne and his associate the warrior Rufus, have been tasked with overseeing construction of a new keep that will overlook the surrounding countryside for miles from atop a large hill on the northeastern side of the village. The church of St. Cuthbert, established only a few years ago, attracts new followers, and the friendly local Inn of the Welcome Wench has its rooms full with the bustle of travelers in a constant stream the likes of which the village has not seen in some time.

But other forces are at work in the village as well. Farmers from the outlying communities and hamlets claim to have seen creatures stealing crops and livestock at night, even reports of ogres or giants far off the beaten path. A missing caravan has hurt the fortunes of local merchants and fired fears of more trouble on the roads. Verbobonc seems reluctant to become directly involved, lest Hommlet become a point of dispute with neighboring cities and powers over what is, at present, primarily a small, sleepy spot on the map.

For some of you, Hommlet has been a home for months or even years. The tradespeople have come to accept you as one of their locals, if perhaps remaining a bit standoffish from time to time. For others, this village is a new stop in your travels, an unfamiliar but welcoming place, but one where farmers watch you with suspicion and the fear of dark secrets lurks under the surface.

By hook or by crook you have been gathered to the town hall -- a long, sturdy building with wooden benches and a raised platform at one end. The hall is recently build, solid, freshly painted, but often unused, and it is on an early evening just after dinner that you have been cajoled, shepherded, or enticed into going there for a meeting rather private.

Burne, His Most Worshipful Mage of Hommlet, has concerns, and he would have them heard. His sometime compatriot Jaroo, the druidic leader of the old oak grove at the heart of the village, is also in attendance.

Some of you have been asked (or directed) here because you are associates of the town's leaders. Others have been asked to attend with the promise of interesting possibilities for employment. And at least one is here with a story to tell.

"Friends and associates," Burne says in his bombastic fashion, "We are here for something of a Secret Meeting, though not so Secret that it had to be conducted in the Keep. I have invited Jaroo Ashstaff to join us because his wise counsel has guided this town for many years." He clears his throat.

Jaroo says in a quiet voice, "Please do not assume that the absence of other luminaries of the town indicates any attempt to exclude them. Many of them simply have other pressing duties."

Burne nods and continues. "We have been dealing recently with reports of increased banditry upon the roads, and some of the residents of outlying areas have reported thefts and even the presence of unknown creatures at night. While my detachment of Badgers will keep the village safe from simple threats, this is a deterrent to trade and commerce in the region, which could have a negative effect."

Jaroo says, "We must see to the needs of the people and keep them safe."

Burne nods and says, "Quite so. As Rufus is otherwise occupied with dealing with military matters relating to our delicate relations with Verbobonc, we have decided to assemble a coalition of individuals with certain... skills... to investigate these troubles."

Jaroo says, "The town council is willing to pay a reward in gold coin for successful investigation and resolution of these claims."

Burne looks slightly annoyed and says, "Ahem. Yes, well, of course you will be compensated for your efforts. Now, to the business at hand. Rumors are most distressing, and as I am well known as a local leader and magician, sometimes people will attempt to obfuscate the truth from me -- especially regarding unfortunate conspiracies. Ergo, I have delegated a special apprentice of mine, here, to investigate. He has a reputation as being somewhat talkative but independent-minded and thus I believe that he may be able to loosen certain tongues, as it were."

Burne indicates Zinnath.

Jaroo then continues, saying, "Our hope is that by working in concert you will be able to ferret out whether there is any truth to these rumors, and if so, to deal with any matters that you can handle, and bring to our attention any matters that you cannot."

Burne says, "If these rumors do have merit, it is possible, indeed likely, that you will find yourselves in the position of having to deal with possible bandits, evil humanoids, or other creatures with extreme prejudice. That is why we have called for the assistance of these rather fearsome warriors." He indicates your imposing half-orc, Deko, and the massive half-ogre, Fezzik.

"Furthermore, the clerics of Veluna and Verbobonc are interested in making sure that this is not the work of a conspiratorial cult or hidden evil shrine, and thus we have also sought out the aid of an outside party who can assist in matters spiritual," says Burne with a gesture to Bataleigha.

Jaroo says, "As there is some friction between the Old Faith -- my purview -- and the new church of St. Cuthbert in our town, it seemed prudent to invite a party who would not have a particular stake in that social conflict."

Burne leans back and says, "I fear there is little we can tell you for leads - much of what we know is based on hearsay. There are many travelers coming through town in the last few days, so perhaps if you were to inquire at the Inn of the Welcome Wench you could shake forth some rumors. And, of course, some of our own townsfolk might be able to relate stories that they have heard. I know that our own carriage-master recently lost a caravan, a loss that he feels quite sorely as that is an expensive investment."

Jaroo says, "If any ill should befall you, please see me at the grove our seek out the aid of the clerics at the church of St. Cuthbert. We may be able to help."

Time for the inevitable questions and introductions!

Zinnath had been paying careful attention to the proceedings, while trying to eat an apple quietly, thus not being entirely successful in either endeavor. As Burne was mentioning his special apprentice, Zinnath thought, "ohhhhh, I would sure hate to be that one. I wonder who he has selected." But when he saw Burne gesturing to him, and saw the incredulous looks on some in the room he had the realization that it was he that had been nominated. He almost choked on the apple, and it took a moment to get the pieces down his long neck and to his gullet. By the time he could breathe easily again, Jaroo had picked up the narrative and continued on.

Zinnath wasn't quite sure he wanted adventure, and monstrous humanoids, even the ones that were supposedly on his side. Nonetheless, as each other member of the select group was singled out, Zinnath could not help but inject his thoughts into their minds. "Congratulations," he told each of them in turn.

When Jaroo completed the rest of his address and it was clear that Burne had nothing more to add, Zinnath leaned back on his haunches, and let out a burp, which he hoped sounded either more quiet or more majestic than he suspected it actually did. Then, he got his wings going and lifted himself up off the bench he had been sitting on. Zinnath extended his telepathy to include all in the room, "I imagine that you are all quite excited to meet me and to know all about me. Probably some of you have never seen a white dragon before. Well, we are fierce, and we anger easily. We are brave, intelligent, and scary. My name is Zinnath the Scary, but you can each call me just Zinnath. I imagine you all have studied dragons, and so you know the things I can do, so let's dispense with that. Tell us about yourselves."

"I am Bataleigha Silvercrest, and I was sent here on a rather vague mission by my superiors in the Temple of Pelor in Verbobonc," says the tall, toned, blonde-haired human woman. "Although combating undead is my specialty, I am not adverse to bashing some evil humanoid raiders. I've been told that I'm not the smartest, wisest, or friendliest priestess in Pelor's order, but my trainers and teachers also say that I was put on Oerth to bring the searing holy light of righteousness to those who plot in darkness. Take that as you may."

Bataleigha is a bit unnerved at the small dragon's telepathic intrusion and wonders if the little creature can read her mind...or if she can respond to it with but a thought.

You don't look scary to me, little wyrm, she thinks in Zinnath's direction, looking at the dragon with a stern gaze. Allowing just the hint of a smile to tug at the corners of her mouth, she adds, But then again, looks can be deceiving.

Zinnath emotes back to Bataleigha, "You don't look as mean, dumb, or unwise as you say you are either. If we are reasonably close and you think to me, I can hear you. Do you like apples?"

Female Human Cleric 3 (Pelor) | hp 24/24 | AC 20, t 12, ff 18 | Fort +5, Ref +4, Will +6 | Init +2 | Perc +2 | Channel Pos. 5/7 | Touch of Glory 5/5 | PoP 1/1

Bataleigha nods to Zinnath and mentally prods, Define 'reasonably close.'

Zinnath shakes his head and hisses, "It means the same as not too far away, doesn't it? Are you trying to prove that you are as dumb as you claimed?"

Female Human Cleric 3 (Pelor) | hp 24/24 | AC 20, t 12, ff 18 | Fort +5, Ref +4, Will +6 | Init +2 | Perc +2 | Channel Pos. 5/7 | Touch of Glory 5/5 | PoP 1/1

"Do you often say random things aloud, O Zinnath the Scary?" Bataleigha asks the dragon, beginning to look more amused. Mentally, she adds, Distance is relative, friend. Verbobonc is 'reasonably close' when compared to, say, the Amedio Jungle. Can we converse across a crowded taproom? At a distance of a city block?

Male Dragon - AC: 18 (16 TCH, 14 FF); SR: 13; Init: +5; CMB: +4 CMD: 14; F:+4 R:+6 W:+5; HP:22/22; Perception +8; (60’ Darkvision)

"I do not often speak aloud at all. As most do not speak the language of dragonkind. Do you speak it? Across a taproom, surely. Down a city block? Perhaps. Depends on the city. We can experiment if you wish. More to the point, do you have any apples?"

Female Human Cleric 3 (Pelor) | hp 24/24 | AC 20, t 12, ff 18 | Fort +5, Ref +4, Will +6 | Init +2 | Perc +2 | Channel Pos. 5/7 | Touch of Glory 5/5 | PoP 1/1

"I do not," Bataleigha says simply. She waits a few seconds to properly irritate the little dragon before adding, "But once the meeting has concluded, I could see if the kind innkeeper at the Welcome Wench has some. How many can you eat?"

Male Dragon - AC: 18 (16 TCH, 14 FF); SR: 13; Init: +5; CMB: +4 CMD: 14; F:+4 R:+6 W:+5; HP:22/22; Perception +8; (60’ Darkvision)

Zinnath considers the question before responding, "naturally, I can eat them all, but, I was asking for a friend. There's a little green dragon around who loves them."

A noticeably tall woman stands at the back of the town hall. She wears a full cloak, and the hood is pulled far over head, leaving only the bottom half of her face visible, and cast well in shadow at that. Not a single strand of hair peeks out from the hood. The only other distinguishing feature is a shortbow slung across her back and an accompanying quiver.

Enoby is waiting for the town hall to clear of the general attendance before introducing herself to the group.

Her Disguise is simple, mostly invested in hiding the majority of her face and skin tone and attempting to pass as a particularly tall human woman. This results in a +5 bonus (minor alterations) and a -2 penalty (attempting to appear as a different race). This was a planned meeting, so she had time to prepare and get her disguise just right, so she took 10. This puts her disguise roll at 21.

She isn't calling attention to herself, so the general crowd does not get a Perception roll against her disguise. Anyone who's attention she calls to herself, and anyone actively suspicious or keeping an eye on the crowd gets a Perception roll against her Disguise.

Deko Dekoson, son of Deko the First, stood there with a blank look on his face. Impassively, he weathered the stares garnered in the meeting. Even when he was introduced, he didn't even blink. What was this mighty specimen of perfection thinking to himself? 'Deko have ham or mutton for dinner? Food with mead! No, Deko have ale!' Obviously, Deko was a man of deep, profound thoughts. Finally, after deciding on a plate of chicken and whiskey, Deko looked up and noticed that the meeting was dispersed and A TINY TALKING DRAGON WAS THERE! "So cute!" he cried before picking Zinnath up and cuddling him to his chest.

Whether he didn't realize what was coming, or didn't believe it was certainly subject to debate, but either way, Zinnath didn't move fast enough to avoid the grasp of the half orc. The surprised dragon transmitted his alarm to all assembled, "Unhand me oaf, or I shall turn you to icicles in your sleep. And I do not talk, usually, now let me go!" As he made his demands of release known, Zinnath struggled to get free...

... but was unable to wriggle out of the orc's grasp. "What is it with you bipeds? Always grabbing and squeezing things? Not everything in the world wants to be touched by you!"

Kyrie giggles at the sight of the half-orc molesting the tiny dragon with unwanted affection. She had been considering doing the same thing, but she'd not be able to do it with as much gusto as the orc, so she was contented to watch the proceedings with undisguised amusement.

In time she gathers herself and stands. She curtseys to the room and says, somewhat blandly, "Greetings to you all. I am Kyrie, a battlemage. I have...heard word that...others...have gone missing investigating these wandering monsters. I have been waiting for a concerted effort to coalesce, and now that one has, we may strike out against the evil that seems to be taking root here and excise it as one does a weed before it can ruin any one else's....um, livelihood."

She takes a seat.

"But..but..dragon so cute!" Deko said as he put the little creature on his head like a hat. "There, now Deko have dragon hat!" He nodded his head, forgetting that the dragon he just put there was, in fact, still alive, and just barely caught the tumbling thing. "Deko Dekoson, son of Deko the First. Deko like hitting things. Deko protect new friends and hit bad things!"

The instant Deko placed Zinnath on his head, the dragon's tiny wings bit into the air, and he shot away from the orc towards Bataleigha, whom he circled several times, while whistling and clacking in annoyance back at the half orc. Having ensured that he was undamaged, and his pride assuaged by making enough racket over the indignity of it all, Zinnath lowered himself to the bench next to the cleric. Zinnath emoted to all present, ignoring what had just happened, "Did we miss anyone? That large ogre fellow there, what is his name? And the tall slender one in the cloak?"

@Enoby: This is a private meeting; Burne and Jaroo chose to use the town hall, which is rarely used anyway, to handle this. Possibly because the keep is still under construction and wouldn't really do a good job of hosting a group meeting like this.

Burne clears his throat and says, "Fortunately undead have not been an issue of late, but one can never be too careful. Marauding evildoers have a tendency to leave corpses in their wake, and unhappily deceased people do have a tendency to become undead."

Jaroo nods and says, "We appreciate all of you agreeing to hear us out. It is important that we do not allow wounds to fester and become a greater threat. We know that Hommlet is a peaceful town and it seems that little of ill import could happen here, but we want to keep it that way."

Burne hrmms and says, "My suspicion is that there is some kind of organized group, perhaps raiders, perhaps evil humanoids, that is behind this. As some of you may already know, I keep on retainer a small group of men who were formerly bandits of the casual sort; after demonstrating the efficacy of the cone of cold spell I convinced them that working with me to safeguard the town was a better choice than banditry. In these troubled times, there are always opportunities for people to take up the life of the brigand, especially those displaced from other distressed communities, of which we have no desire for Hommlet to become one."

Jaroo nods and says, "In short, Burne thinks possibly that refugees or cultists could have moved into the area from one of the neighboring locations that isn't so stable, like Hardby or even from the Pomarj."

For those unfamiliar with Greyhawk, Hardby is a roguish port city that has gone through tumultuous rulership, and the Pomarj is an orcish kingdom.

Jaroo finishes with, "Do you have any questions that we can answer?"

"The carriage-master who recently lost an entire caravan...what is his name and where might we find him? I'm sorry--I'm newly-arrived at your charming village and don't know the lay of the land just yet."

Zinnath chirps to himself briefly before finally posing a couple questions for all to hear, "you keep saying evil humanoids. You imply orcs by mentioning Pomarj. Are there indications or rumors of any other types? Giants? Ogres? Goblins? Kobolds? Besides the carriage master, are there other survivors, perhaps at the Welcome Wench you suggested? First hand evidence will certainly be a great source of information for us. What is our authority to handle this problem? Bipeds often respect the power of words on paper. Perhaps we should be provided one of those writs?"

Fezzik showed up at the town hall as he was instructed to do and waited outside near the corner of the building. From here he could watch two sides of the building and see who entered. Rufus had taught him this as part of his guard training. He had also found that people were less intimidated by him when he wasn't right by the entrance. He watched as a few people entered who he didn't recongnize and a little dragon that he had seen around the tower. "Burne inside already, now pet here too," he thought to himself.

When the guard at the door motioned for him to go in, he was surprised. He usually stayed outside and it didn't sound like there was a problem inside. But as he usually did, he followed directions and entered. He looked around the room for a place to stand out of the way. He listened to the mage and druid speak, trying to follow the best he could. When he heard his name, he straighted up and puffed his chest out a bit. "Special mission for Fezzik? Me so proud. I show them I can do," he thought as a slight smile came across his face.

Once the briefing had ended, and following the other's example, he introduced himself. "My name Fezzik. Part of Badger's. Just tell me what to do and I do it."

Kyrie nods at the suggestion to seek out the caravan master. He probably won't have detailed advice, but it should at least give them a starting point.

She pays little attention as the dragon babbles on about distinctions of demi-humans. One might as well learn the foibles of the insects as you exterminate them. Vermin are vermin. But that last question, that is interesting....

"Good Zinnath, such questions of legality are usually reserved for when one anticipates conflicts of legality. If we were to venture into Verbobonc lands, then that would be one thing, but if such dangers were found there, we would simply advice the authorities there.

So long as we stay in the titled lands around Hommlet, we are only held in check by the ruling lord. And if that lord is our good Arch-Mage Burne here, then it is only his word we must obey and his word we must fear.

So, too, any writ he gave us to operate in his lands would be unneeded in his lands, and powerless outside it.

Hence, let us merely state "your will my hands" and be about it. Unless your real reason to wait for a properly notarized writ is to delay? Because you are...afraid? Understandable, of course. I shall try to leave some orcs alive for you until your legalities are sated."

Kyrie inwardly smiled. She was arguing the law with a dragon! Oh, if only her family could see her now!

The tall, cloaked woman finally steps forward.

"I am afraid that M'Lord Burne likely has the right of it. A dark cult has taken root in the area."

While her stride and stature are confident, her left hand errantly fusses with the hem of her cloak, betraying a certain degree of nervousness.

"I know this because, until just shy of a month ago, I was taking coin from them as a swordarm. I will tell you now that I am no paladin: my ethics are flexible as is needed. However even I have my standards, my lines I will not cross. This cult is a foul thing, and I would end it. Not from altruism, mind you. This village is not my home. But it has done me a good turn in harboring me from the cult's grasp and I would seek to repay it. Beyond that, their power grows daily and I cannot evade them forever. My only path to salvation lies in it's destruction."

She tenses. "And as lack of trust would surely doom this endeavor before it is started..."

Enoby dramatically throws back the hood of her cloak, revealing long, stark-white hair, and skin a faint shade of purple from being black as night.

"...You should know precisely who offers you assistance. Enoby, formerly of house Illith'vir, wayward songstress and mercenary condemned to an exile of her choosing."

Deko looked confused at the big, strange words coming from the lady and the dragon. "What matter what bad guy look like? Deko see bad guy, Deko hit bad guy. Be like night at tavern," he said with a nod. "Deko hit bad guy then get good drink. Or get good drink then hit bad guy. That sound better, get drink first." When he saw Fezzik, a crooked grin revealed two rows of uneven, yellowed teeth. "Fezzik! Why not drink with Deko last night?" And finally, as the last of the group revealed herself, all Deko said was, "Pretty skin."

Zinnath responds with a most indignant tone in everyone's minds. "Afraid?! Me? A dragon? Certainly not. I laugh at the thought of afraidness. It was only my attempt to ensure that you all do not go to prison if we slaughter all of the evil cultists. As an aside, Enoby of the dark skin and pointy ears, what cult are we dealing with here?"

When the remarkably tall woman threw back her cloak's hood, the breath caught in Bataleigha's throat--a drow! Looking around the room--at the halfbreeds of orc and ogre stock, and even at the little white dragon (Weren't white dragons almost universally evil?)--the cleric of Pelor wondered if her superiors in Verbobonc had sent her on this mission to get rid of her permanently! Only Kyrie was human and kindly-looking...yet often humans could prove the evilest and most treacherous of all the races.

Strangely, Burne and Jaroo didn't seem particularly alarmed or even put off by the motley crew they'd gathered here. Bataleigha decided to keep her mouth shut and her ears open for now. She knew it was unwise to judge a book merely by its cover.

Burne says casually, "Ah, yes, Fezzik here is one of my most mighty Badgers. Do not let his size and heritage dismay you. He has proven as loyal as the others in turning his commitment to defending our town, and he will be a great asset to you should battle arise."

Jaroo says a bit more sternly, "And the appearance of Enoby is what has precipitated this meeting. Before, we had only vague rumors and the occasional sighting of strange things by farmers and loggers. Now, our suspicions that there is some sort of organized evil at work are given more weight."
"I know that it is difficult to trust..." - his gaze slides toward Enoby, then back across the party - "... but the security of our town, and perhaps the region, may well be at stake. So it is important for us to keep an open mind and to be ready to believe that danger could be in the offing, and thus that we should be prepared to confront it. After all, there is no obvious reason to lie about such."

Burne says, "We are extending a great deal of leeway in how you choose to approach this operation. Should you uncover evidence of an organized conspiracy, please report it to the town leaders immediately. If in the course of your investigations you uncover relics, treasures, or magical items..."

Jaroo interjects, "You will be allowed to keep them, though we may consult with the town leadership and ask to destroy anything that proves to be a dangerous device of evil."

Burne frowns slightly, hrrms, and says, "Yes, yes of course. Though I can perhaps aid you in determining the use of unusual magical items." A touch of avarice tinges his voice, and you suspect that his interest is more in trying to make sure that he finds out if anything especially interesting is discovered in case he wants to make a (probably cheapskate) offer to purchase it from you.

"Deko hit much bad guys!" Deko exclaimed cheerfully as he cracked his knuckles, the well-worn leather fingerless gloves creaking in protest. "Deko like people here, share much drink! Then hit people! Then drink more!" So saying, he took out a flask from his belt and took a swig, the scent of whiskey floating from the open container. Giving a hearty belch that was very out of character based on the amount of liquid he ingested, he looked around at the people around him. "Deko protect all with mighty fists! Even cute little dragon!"

Zinnath lets out a shrill whistle before querying everyone, "I get why someone might express concern at either Deko or Fezzik, especially with Deko's handsy manner, but I don't understand the visceral reaction that some are having to Enoby. We have all seen elves before, have we not?"

Zinnath thinks for a moment before adding, "wait, magic? We might find magic while doing this? Will there be treasure too? We dragons love collecting hordes of magic and treasure. We white dragons especially like diamonds!"

Enoby makes a small cough to call everyone's attention.

"While I do not know the location of their primary base of operations, I do know they have several outposts in the surrounding lands. They typically favor ruins and other uninviting locales that are likely to naturally repel casual eyes."

Her tone grows more serious. "I would also warn you that I know for certain they have operatives in the area's settlements, Hommlet included. While we take a risk they may recognize me, our edge of that sword is that I may recognize them as well. If we cannot find any leads within the village, scouting nearby caves and ruins may allow us to cast light upon some of the cult's machinations."

"Operatives in the village, you say?" Bataleigha ponders aloud. After a few more moments of silent contemplation, she adds, "Such agents would likely either hide along the fringes of town where their comings and goings would least likely be witnessed...or hide in plain sight, at some place where people coming and going is the norm. The inn certainly fits that description. Is there also a marketplace or trading post here in Hommlet?"

Zinnath scratches his chin with his foreclaws a bit before emoting with a bit of vigor to the group, "I will not be ignored! Why is no one answering my questions?"

He turns his head towards Enoby and continues in a fashion so that all can hear, "What types of creatures can we expect? What is this a cult of? You were a member, so tell us of their blood rituals and membership oaths. Why are they all afraid of you, besides your being a cultist? Oh, and diamonds, they have diamonds right?"

Fezzik smiles at Burne's mention of his name. As the conversation goes back and forth he shakes his head trying to follow it. When he hears Zinnath, a confused look comes across his face as he tilts his head to the side and fixes his gaze on the dragon. "How you talk without opening mouth?" he asks.

Zinnath responds back solely to Fezzik, "It is quite easy, if you are a mighty dragon, or at least the friend of a mighty dragon. Shall we test if you are actually the friend of a mighty dragon? Try it, just think to me, and we will find out. You do not need to open your mouth."

Burne "ahems" to try to generate some semblance of organization.

Jaroo says, "We have no easy way to root out people who may be operatives -- hence why we are looking to you, folk who have either worked with us before, or who have a good reputation from their organizations at home, or who can recognize other agents of this cult."

Burne adds, "There are several tradesmen and women in town. The wainwright is named Valden and he resides just to the west of the keep, in its shadow. There is also a trading post that was recently established to support the needs of the mercenaries and craftsmen employed in the construction of the keep."

Kyrie nods and stands up. "Alright, looks like we best start with Valden, take things from there. Everyone ready"

Zinnath emotes to the group, "alright, let us off to see Valden then, shall we?"

He flutters over to Enoby, and says to just her, "Mind if I ride on your shoulder for a bit? I think the visual impact of your dark skin and my white scales will make for an impressive spectacle as we go through town."

"Very well--to the wainwright's shop," Bataleigha says, and she trudges along a bit slowly and clankily behind the rest of the group. "Which of us are going inside and which will do the talking?"

To all: "That is the best question yet. Who do we think the best talkers are?"

"Perch upon my shoulder if you wish, small creature," Enoby replies to Zinnath flatly."But I intend to keep my hood up and face shadowed. I'll not find myself impaled on some rivvil land tiller's pitchfork so that you may make a fashion statement."

Zinnath lands on Enoby's shoulder and wraps his tail around her neck to balance himself. "I don't understand, why would they do that to you?" He continues just to Enoby.

"I tend to be rather direct--some would say blunt--in my conversations with others. I'm not very good at diplomacy or misdirection or doubletalk. But Pelor has granted me a power that can help me--or those I choose to imbue--in being...nicer."

"In a pinch I can make sugared words, but by no means would I put forth my tongue when others are available. Methinks that being questioned by a real, live, scary dragon would make one open and talkative where otherwise they might not. So, good Zinnath, would you take the lead in the realm of the vernacular?"

Fezzik listens as the group comes up with a plan. He turns to Burne and asks as discretely as he can, "Who I take orders from now?"

Zinnath rested his left elbow against Enoby's head as he sat up on her shoulder. He almost gleamed as he responded to everyone, "Of course I would, scary dragons make natural leaders. Fezzik, it looks like I am the boss."

"Deko make words!" Deko said with a grin. "Deko make good words! Deko say words now!" A wide grin spread across his face at his accomplishment. "So, we go down and Deko make words!" With that, Deko turned around and promptly ran into the door. It shook harshly at the impact.

So that all of our group can hear, but no one else: "Deko, I suspect that your powers of observation might be more useful in this situation than your considerable word-making skills. It would be especially useful if rather than using your tongue in this, and future similar situations, that instead you could keep your eyes and ears open. With that said when it comes time to intimidate them, rather than to speak nicely to them, your words might become useful, especially when combined with those of a scary dragon like me!"

Fezzik looks at the little dragon and shrugs his shoulders. "I follow Burne, can follow his pet too," he says with a smile.

Zinnath:
Burne, quite accustomed to working with the miniature dragon, thinks at Zinnath, "I am counting on you to report any suspicious activity back to me. Come by the keep again tomorrow in the afternoon or evening and let me know of your initial findings about this group."

Burne says to Fezzik, "Zinnath can offer guidance for the time being. I expect as your investigations continue you will find who has insights that are worth following. Personally, I expect that you will find that Kyrie is intelligent and reasonable, as that is usually the case with arcane magicians."

At this point there's still a bit of daylight so you have a little time to visit spots around the village or talk to a couple of people. As noted before, you might want to talk to the proprietor of the inn, or to Valden the wainwright. You could also lean on your local contacts, such as Fezzik going to talk to the captain of the Badgers or the like.

Bataleigha suggests heading immediately to interview Valden the wainwright. If it's on the way, she also expresses an interest in visiting the trading post.
