@Zandomir I know it's a shame to waste a nice crit, but strictly speaking I did exactly what you asked :) I quote: 'readies an arrow to fire once he has line-of-sight to the rats.' You first saw the rats then the Rat King when it came out of it's hole. Anyway I'd prefer not to retcon this time because I think you lot are going to slaughter this encounter in 2 rounds anyway.
@Zarine the rats are big ugly things! In game terms they're small so they do threaten adjacent squares. You're right your swarm is diminutive so it doesn't get to hit all those rats, I've adjusted the the map. I won't retcon the initial round, so you got a freebie this time :)

Below Heinrich patiently waits for a lift, and Filbert concentrates once more on the bucket. A little unsteadily Heinrich floats up and he sees Zarine's bats bite to death one of the rats! He then notices Zarine screaming in silence at the Rat King. Weirdly the rat king thrashes about and blood starts to ooze from five pairs of ears!

Lizzie's mace splatters a rat, sending blood and guts flying.

Bow crackling with lightnings, Zandomir unleashes a rapid pair of arrows. He had a clear shot, being able to see over the dire rat, but the Rat King was preternaturally dexterous! It's heads chittered horribly as it flipped up in the air to avoid the arrows. No soft cover I think, but it has AC 18 so both miss.

Despite being overbalanced, Momijii's foot still caught the huge rat in front of Zarine. So powerful was her kick, that it's head separated from the body and it was dead before it hit the wall with a nasty squelch. I assume you meant to hit the Dire Rat Momijii. You'd have missed the Rat King with a 14.

One of the dire rats squeaks piercingly at the dead rat in front of Lizzie and it charges her, but the gnome's stout armor turns aside it's teeth. The other one is nauseated and wanders about aimlessly as it's life blood leaks away.

The Rat King continues it's assault on Zarine. She manages to evade one of it's filthy heads, but another clamps down upon her. The remaining heads infuriated by the death of the rat in font of them attack Momijii in a frenzy, leaving her bloodied and torn! Monks are immune to disease at 5th level, nifty.

I don't get what you are saying. How can the swarm be diminutive? It says on the Bat Swarm page and in the swarm rules that they take up a 10 foot cube. As far as I know, swarms are always 10x10. It is a bunch of tiny creatures, but they are big as a group. I am confused.

... The only thing that I was saying might be tiny were your individual rats, but as you linked, these ones are actual dire rats, not regular rats, so much bigger.

Is it okay if I choose a different second level spell other than summon swarm, and also change out the item I bought that summons rat swarms in our other game? (Pipes of the Sewers)?

I definitely would rather us be on the same page about what is happening in game, and swarms don't seem to be something that we are in agreement about, so it might be easier for everyone just to avoid them.

Last round of the bat swarm. Everything that took damage from the swarm before should get an additional point of bleed, and have to make the save again. Then the swarm should disappear on my next turn.

Zan sighs. It seems he needs a bit more of Desna's luck if he's going to hit the rat king.

The warpriest looks over worried eyes at Zarine when she gets bitten, but also looks at Momijii who seems to take an even worse assault. Zan can't risk channeling to heal the pair, not while the rats are still alive. He relaxes a bit when he sees Zarine heal herself.

Taking aim, he looses two more arrows at the king, his bow still crackling with electricity.

So as you can probably tell I'm not familiar with the swarm rules. I've played against them occasionally but they've never come up before in any of the games I've run. Anyway the beastry entry for bat swarm lists them as diminutive, but now I see from the universal rules they occupy a 10' square. Basically means more of the rats are dead. Anyway yes you can select different spells (and item) if you wish, although I don't think it will be necessary.

Momijii cried out in pain at the flurry of attacks the rat king made, everyone of them tearing into her flesh. In bad shape, but knowing she didn't have anywhere to go, Momijii lashed out with a flurry of blows, the first of which had stunning force catching one of the heads square on the snout followed by a second, more damaging, strike, aimed at the chin of the same head with one knee. She then stepped to one side and said, "A little healing would be good right now."

Agrippa attempts to tumble past the Rat King, but once again the entwined horror proved to be surprisingly nimble, biting him on the leg as he went past. Although the wound bled, he felt no pain, bolstered as he was by his magics. Still it was not good to be bitten by a filthy thing like that...

Wounded, Zarine steps away and casts a spell. A nimbus of soft blue light surrounds her hand and at her touch the wounds close and the bleeding stops.

Stuck below, poor Filbert scrambles into bucket and attempts to clamber up the rope. Unfortunately he hand't gone far before he slipped due to his sweaty hands - pushing everyone up had been hard work! Filbert the DC should be a lot lower due to the rope. The rope isn't knotted so lets say the climb is DC 15 now.

With one rat splattered, Lizzie tries to finish off the last one off. Despite bleeding from the many tiny bites and scratches, it still proves too nimble for her, and dodges aside.

Zandomir launches a couple of arrows at the Rat King. It's unpredictable movements, such as lurching about to strike Heinrich made this particularly hard. His first arrow went wide, but the second one was deadly accurate! The Rat King shirked in pain as the arrow bit deeply.

With Agrippa proving to be a great distraction, Momijii was able to connect powerfully twice. She was sure something broke inside several of the conjoined rats, but there was nothing more dangerous than a cornered rat - it was going to fight to the bitter end!

The last of the dire rats tried once more to bite Lizzie, but the little gnome was simply too heavily armored.

In fury of teeth and claw, the Rat King lashes out at all those around. It manages to score bites and scratches on both Momijii and Agrippa. With the last bite Agrippa felt his protective spell fade.

"Dang it" a frustrated gnome grumbles as he stands back up out of the water. Trying to wipe his hands off on his wet shirt, Filbert gives it another go.

Momijii cried out in pain as she was bitten again but she managed to keep going. She sent a pair of blows out once more, her first as devastatingly strong, but it was rather inaccurate, while her second was for closer to the mark.

momijii knew she had nowhere to go and could only hope that she would be healed before it was too late, she wasn't sure she could stand another attack from the rat thing. It was then that she felt Zarine's hand on her and healing energy washed through her healing at least some of her injuries from the ratking's attacks.

Apparently bards are better at healing than warpriests... he thinks to himself.

With the battle appearing to turn in the group's favor, Zan lets the electricity fade from his bow before releasing another pair of arrows in the rat king's direction.

Been a bit distracted of late sorry for the slow progress.

Agrippa expertly plunges Red Destiny into the mass of conjoined rats, slicing several open several furry bodies. A thin piping wail issues from the disease ridden Rat King!

Concerned about the terrible wounds she had been taking, Zarine whispers a spell which bathes her hand in soft blue radiance. She reaches out to touch Momijii staunching her bleeding and causing the worst of her wounds to close! At the same instant the summoned bats wheel up away from battle and vanish without a trace.

Poor Filbert cools his heels below, unable to get up by himself.

Zandomir's bow thrums in an almost musical manner as he plants a pair of deadly accurate arrows which pierce the cranium of several of the conjoined bodies. In it's death throws the rat king thrashes about aimlessly. Momijii proceeds to beat it to a pulp, splattering gore everywhere!

Among the filth and remains in the rat cave is a pouch containing 17 gp, 43 sp, and a diamond ring worth 1,500 gp.

Zan catches the glint of something shiny in the cave from which the rats emerged. After retrieving his arrows and placing them back in his quiver, the warpriest walks over to the cave and leans down. He mutters a few words and his bow lights up. Zan whistles softly before grabbing the pouch and the ring from the cave.

"For such repulsive creatures, the rats had good taste," Zan says, glancing into the pouch and showing the diamond ring to the others.

"Anyone have a good place to store this thing?" he asks, nodding to the diamond ring.

A bit embarrassed that he forgot to ask immediately after the fight ended, Zan adds, "Oh, uh, does anyone need more healing? Zarine may have me beat while in combat, but I can certainly patch you up now if you need it."

Zan scratches his head. Something else seems to be bothering him. Something he's forgotten.

Oh, oops... he realizes, once more embarrassed with himself.

He walks quickly over to the well and shouts down to Filbert, "Grab onto the rope and we'll pull you up now. The immediate threat has passed."

Zarine casts Prestidigitation on herself, and offers to cast it on everyone else, to clean off any leftover rat filth.

She grins when Zan asks about diamond ring storage. I'll store it on my finger if you like.

She casts detect magic on the ring, just in case, before putting it on. (If Zan gives it to her to "store.")

Filbert waits patiently as the sounds of battle above settle done and then disappear all together. When no one seems to remember him , he begins whistling. Shortly thereafter Zan's face appears above him and he begins pulling the rope with Filbert attached to it.

"Thanks, not sure what it says when I can stand in the muck and possibly lift all of you together but can't pull myself up a simple rope without help. Except I need to do more pull ups" Filbert says with a wry grin.

Walking over to Zarine, the jeweler in Filbert comes out, inspecting the ring. The hairs on the back of your neck stand up as a thick-set black-clad figure shuffles heavily towards you. Like a beached fish he has a pale, puffy face from which yellow-irised eyes glare with equal parts intensity and insanity! He shouts, "Have you found the Yellow Sign?" before sprinting towards you to attack. As he does so he trails a cloak of gloom, when he's within 20' he suddenly vanishes!

Zarine knew where The Keeper had gone even though it had vanished. She was satisfied to hear a meaty *THUNK*. Meanwhile Zamdomir nooks an arrow, draws it to his cheek and waits for The Keeper to reappear.

Lizzie feels the sudden onrush on air before being rocked back by the meaty fist of the black-clad connecting with her jaw! It's touch was clammy and awful, sucking at her life force. She gritted her teeth and staunchly resisted!

Momijii was relieved when the filthy rats finally died, that king one in particular was worrisome. She was about to ask if she could be healed some more when more trouble struck. She took her stance again but found herself blocked by everyone in the tunnel. She couldn't reach the enemy for once. She decided it was time to try something challenging and began to move through where her allies were. Shen she reached Lizzie she tumbled over the paladin's head and made to dive between the strange man's legs to pop up behind him and strike.

Ugh! I had the round resolved which took half an hour and then we had a powercut just as I was about to submit. Anyway to recap. The rules for moving through an enemy square seem a bit poorly framed.
I'm going to rule that unless the creature is too you can squeeze past but you take an AOO if you fail to beat it's CMD. In this case the creature has a CMD of 23 so Momijii takes an AOO.

Momijii tumbled over the Lizzie's head and made to dive between The Keeper's legs to pop up behind him and strike! Unfortunately one meaty fist lashed out blocking her strike and another smashed into her side. It's touch was cold, like the grave and Momijii felt it tugging her soul - feasting upon it!

Filbert manages to thread a powerful blast though the throng of battle. It impacted The Keeper high in the chest, blasting out a cloud of gore behind. Strangely though, the wound left was smaller than Filbert might have expected and if The Keeper felt any pain he wasn't showing it! I don't think you can bypass the DR unfortunately.

Lizzie calls upon the power of the shining goddess. A flicker of fear crosses the undead fiend's features as her Morningstar descends with terrible force. It strikes with a blue white flash, searing the pale flabby flesh!

Filbert's nose twitches as the creature seemingly shakes off the previous hit, gathering more aether and circling it around the pebble in his hand he makes this circle not so compact. "If the grape sized shot passed right through you, let's try something a bit larger and orange ought to pack a nice punch."

Momijii gave a cry of fear and pain at the touch of the abomination as it pulled on her soul, tearing away a portion of it. It also pissed her off. Determined to end this cursed thing Momijii lashed out with both fists in a pair of strikes.

Letting the others check the keeper for anything of value Filbert eases down the hallway towards the next intersection, trying to remain quiet and let his natural eyesight pierce the gloom.
