DM Duke's Reign of Winter - The Snows of Summer

Game Master DukeRuckley

Please feel free to discuss what you would like to play here. The following are the character creation rules:

Point Buy: If your highest stat is higher than 18 after racial bonuses/penalties, you are limited to a 17 point buy. If it is 18 exactly, you get a 19 point buy. If it is less than 18, you get a 22 point buy. The goal is to make some of the MAD classes/concepts a little more appealing while limiting some of the optimization of the SAD classes. (MAD = multiple ability dependent, SAD = single ability dependent).

Alignment: You may be any non-evil alignment. Remember that Chaotic Neutral (CN) is not a substitute for evil.

Races: Core races (Dwarf, Elf, Gnome, Half-elf, Halfling, Half-orc, Human) are permitted. Non-core races will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Core races with inherent resistances (such as cold resist 5) will not likely be approved.

Classes: All core, APG, UM, and UC classes and archetypes are generally approved, though some restrictions may occur on a case-by-case basis. For example, Synthesis Summoners tend to be overpowered, so they may not be allowed. We can work any concerns out below.

Traits: You get two traits. One trait must be from the Player's Guide, and the other from any other source (with approval).

Starting HP: You will start with max HP at 1st level. Every level thereafter you will take average HP rounded up (3 for 1d4, 4 for 1d6, 5 for 1d8, 6 for 1d10, and 7 for 1d12).

Starting Wealth: You will start with average wealth for your class.

Firearms: I've only looked briefly at the first two modules and I didn't notice a single firearm. Please take into consideration that you will likely have to purchase any firearms and ammo you'll need, as you won't be finding much in treasure.

Cold Weather: The Player's Guide has information on how cold weather affects gameplay. You might want to take that into consideration. For example, you'll be fighting a lot of cold based creatures, so cold attacks won't be very effective. On the other hand, they'll use cold against you as well. Also, during snowstorms, visibility is limited and ranged attacks take a penalty. Endurance could be a very useful feat.

Note that I'll review your characters before we start. If you are planning on building your character around or up to a specific feat or feat chain, please let me know in advance. Certain feats may not be allowed (like Leadership and Antagonize).

I would like to give you some background for where you begin the campaign.

You'll start in a town called Heldren in southern Taldor, during the height of summer. Taldor is sort of the Golarion equivalent of Rome on the edge of collapse. The nation is run by Grand Prince Stavian III who seems to be more interested in indulging in decadence than actually governing. As a result, most of the upper class and nobility are lazy, preferring to attend parties over ruling. The Senate meets often, though they spend most of their time bickering over trivial things. Taxes are high, and the middle and lower classes are overworked and tired. But outlying communities tend to get on pretty well despite all of this.

Heldren is one such outlying community. It is a small hamlet of farmers, herders, and woodcutters. There are few worries in Heldren: taxes, the harvest, and potential aggression from nearby Qadira to south, despite an ongoing truce. Heldren is home to about 137 people, most of whom are humans. The citizens are generally friendly and tolerant to outsiders. They tend to worship Erastil primarily, though they are tolerant to other non-evil religions.

You'll begin in Heldren, so you'll need to have a reason to be there. Perhaps you are living there now, or grew up there and recently returned. Perhaps you have a contact in the area. Notable NPCs include Councillor Ionnia Teppen (the leader of Heldren's village council), Elder Natharen Safander (a half-elf Cleric of Erastil), and Soothsayer Old Mother Theodora (the village's very old resident wise woman).

If you have an idea what you want to play, I can help you determine your reason for being in Heldren. And as always, I encourage your characters to have a connection with one another.

So, I thought I'd give you all a quick rundown of the Paizo forums.

Creating an Alias: Once you have an account and are signed in, you can create aliases to roleplay under. To do so, click on "My Account" at the top of the page. You should see a section of the account page call "Messageboard Aliases." Simply click on the "Create New Alias" button. Here you can change the alias name to the name of the character, and you can search through the avatars to find one that suits you.

Once you have an alias, you can do some neat things with it. The first is that you can post on the forums as your alias. When posting, simply click on the "Post As" drop down below the text box and choose the alias you want to post under. In addition, you can go back to your account page and set your character alias as the default for convenience.

Every alias has their own profile and the forums track their posts separately from the main account alias. You can also see which campaigns the alias is a part of (once the alias posts in the campaign thread). See Alanaes Rastova for an example. I like to use the profile as a place to put the character sheet. It makes it easy for you to find your stats and for the the GM to see them as well.

Posting: Underneath the textbox, you'll see some hints on how to format your text. I'll reproduce them here real quick.

If you make a mistake, or need to make a change for any reason, you have exactly one hour to do so before editing is locked. You can edit your post by clicking the "Edit" link to the top right of the post. Also, if you are making a particularly long post, it is a good idea to "Ctrl+A" and then copy the text in case the forums time out on you. That way if you lose the post, you can just quickly paste it back in.

Conventions: Here are some quick conventions that makes things easier to read.

"You should use bold and quotes to indicate speaking."

Italics is typically used to convey internal monologue.

Please use OOC for out-of-character comments on the main thread. They aren't necessary for the discussion thread.

Male Human Alchemist Level 1

Johnathon Fritz grew up in the small town of Kettle Creek located in Andoran, and was the son of the local apothecary. From a young age he seemed to have an aptitude for the alchemical arts. Johnathon found that he loved to transform raw ingredients into their base elements and combine them in new and exciting ways. His passion would later lead him to a small academy in Oppara where he became an apprentice alchemist. While in attendance, he became romantically involved with a beautiful young woman named Elsa. The pair spent many hours studying recipes and brewing potions. Johnathon soon found himself completely in love. He eventually proposed to Elsa, who wholeheartedly accepted and the two were married near the edge of a tranquil lake. Shortly after their marriage, Johnathon and Elsa opened an alchemy shop were they sold unique potions and elixirs. Johnathon couldn't have been happier. However, his happiness was sort lived. A year later Elsa mysteriously disappeared. Some towns folk believed that she ran off with another man, while other suspected foul play. Ultimately, after a few months Jonhathon closed shop and left town. He now traverses the world searching and hoping for anything that could reunite him with his lost love. As of late his travels have brought him to the small hamlet of Heldren in Southern Taldor. There he met Tessaraea Willowbark a skilled elven alchemist. Upon hearing his misfortunate tale, she decided to share her years of wisdom in hopes that it may help him with his tireless pursuit.
