DM-Camris' CARRION CROWN Chapter 2: Trial of the Beast (Inactive)

Game Master Camris

The Beast of Lepidstadt has been captured! Upon traveling to Lepidstadt, the adventurers must discover whether the legendary monster is truly a killer or merely the instrument of some greater evil—and either way, whether it’s too dangerous to be allowed to survive.
HERGSTAG OVERVIEW

Due to an unfortunate number of fatalities, we are recruiting three (maybe four) people for the Second chapter in the Carrion Crown Adventure Path.

The current survivors are:
Agrimar
Male Half-Orc Paladin (Undead Scourge)
Ereviss
Male elf bard (detective*)
and Kendra, NPC Female Human Wizard (diviner)

Character Build requirements:
Level four.
Twenty point buy stats.
To Generate Hit points; roll for hitpoints (plus con plus toughness plus whatever), but reroll if you get less than half+1.
Two traits.
One campaign trait, and a reason you weren't able to make Professor Lorrimor's funeral. (Check out the free pdf Carrion Crown Players Guide for details on the Campaign Traits.)
6000gp for equipment, no more than 2000 on any one item.
Unchained classes are OK.
Occult Adventures classes, while not forbidden, bear in mind I don't have that book yet.

If you've played in the first chapter, but never made it through, well here's your chance to find out!

Recruiting open until Monday. Probably.

Pathfinder Adventure Path Subscriber

Always wanted to play this AP. I make a character later today.

Will level her up to 4 soon.

Races?

And will you allow the Vigilante?

Level 2: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
Level 2 reroll: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
Level 3: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
Level 4: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
Level 4 Reroll: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10

Leveled except for equipment (will finish later today). Concept is if the Ghost Whisperer was a descendant of Van Helsing.

Any specific list of sources for race and class? Or if you would rather us bring up anything not specificlly mentioned would you allow a Stalker from Path of War?

I might be able to throw my hat in. I have a witch character, Nadiya (link is to her profile) who I designed specifically for a Carrion Crown campaign. Unfortunately it ended up being one of those PBPs where the GM just disappeared without explanation or warning, and only shortly after the game started. So I don't know ANYTHING that happened in chapter 1... but it looks like you're planning on having new characters meet the existing party "on the road," as it were, yes? So I would not necessarily need to know what happened.

You seem to have a caster heavy party so I don't know if she'd suit your game well, and I'll have to level her up. She is a healing focused witch. Let me know if you think she'd at least potentially suit and I'll revise the character accordingly.

As to why she'd miss the funeral -- on her way there, she came upon a small village devastated by a nasty plague. Her drive to heal ever urging her, she could not walk on when she could stop and help nurse the ailing folk of the town -- and she knew Lorrimor would have expected no less of her.

May as well roll HP while I'm here...

Level 2: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
Level 3: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Level 4: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8

I would love to jump on this boat, if there's still space available. The two characters I'm looking at for this are a plucky necromancy-focused cleric who believes that "If you're going to do bad things, do them for a good reason" and a typical woodsman-styled hunter/ranger. I'm leaning heavily toward the former, though I can completely understand why that may be concerning for this AP. Which is why I offer the alternative of a ranger/hunter. Either way, I have never gone past the first book in Carrion Crown, so I'm excited to see what lays beyond! Let me know what you think. I'm working on the sheet now and will update this post when it's completed.

Skiia's a character I thought up for another Carrion Crown game, for which she wasn't ultimately selected. I would have to level her up, of course, and boost her stats, since she was first meant for a 15-point game. The plan was to dabble in slayer along with wizard, and eventually head for eldritch knight.

Before I go mad trying to update her, though, might I ask what pace you expect for the game? One post a day (under ideal circumstances, possibly a bit more frequently during the heat of combat encounters requiring less wordy role-playing) is about the limit of what I can commit to at the moment, so if you had a faster pace in mind I'll likely withdraw before updating Skiia.

Same for me regarding time commitment.

And any other expectations we should be aware of?

Here is the link for my cleric! Just needs some gear and for the go ahead.

I started book one of Carrion Crown, but didn't get too far before the group fell apart. I'm quite excited to see how the campaign plays out! I'm new to PBP, but I've done my research and have been reading through some of the campaigns here on the forums, so I don't expect I'll make too much of a fool of myself. That said, I'm not new to the Pathfinder system, so hopefully that all balances out.

Lyra's Involvement with the Late Professor
During her adventures on the road, Lyra's path crossed with the professor while he was guest lecturing at a library. Lyra, being the outgoing gnome she is, sat on the floor directly in front of the podium and raised her hand to ask questions after every statement the Professor made (some questions were on topic, others less so). Of course, even once the lecture had finished she still had questions, so she started writing to the professor and to her delight, he responded promptly each time.
Why Lyra was Late to the Funeral
It was a sad day when she received the news that the Professor had passed on. Who was going to help her answer questions now? She had started to make her way to the funeral in Ustalav, but got distracted part way there when she decided to briefly join a traveling circus heading into Varisia before setting herself back on track to her destination. Surely the Professor would understand!

HP Rolls:

Level 2 HP: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Level 3 HP: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Level 4 HP: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7

Level 2 HP Reroll: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Level 2 HP Reroll take two: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7

I give you Leander the Little. Inquisitor of Iomedae.

HP Rolls:

Level 2: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Level 3: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Level 4: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

Level 2 Reroll: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
Level 3 Reroll: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
Level 4 Reroll: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

Level 4 Reroll: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

I'm thinking I'd like to submit a human archer Inquisitor of Pharasma with the Souls Domain. I'll get something together tonight after work finishes. I've got some keen interest in trying out Carrion Crown.

Interested. :) thinking Dwarven Alchemist.....

HP: 1d8 ⇒ 1
HP: 1d8 ⇒ 6
HP: 1d8 ⇒ 7

rerolling the 1 - HP: 1d8 ⇒ 1 -> HP: 1d8 ⇒ 3 -> HP: 1d8 ⇒ 4 -> HP: 1d8 ⇒ 4 -> HP: 1d8 ⇒ 7

Finally. :)

Well, I haven't seen fit to ban any particular race yet, but the more human you look the better it is for the campaign. The more unhuman you look, the more difficult it will be to gather the information you need to protect the innocent townsfolk who are discriminating against you.

As for the Vigilante, well I fear no flying mouse even if I don't have the book yet. Bring him on!

Talonhawke wrote:

I have most of the Paizo published works, so I have no particular approved list for races and classes.

I will limit you to Paizo published material, so stuff from the Path of War is out.

I'd call our current group a rogue/(half arcane caster) and a martial/(half divine caster). So a full caster of whatever would be helpful.

Your character is certainly a potentially suitable recruit.

Skiia wrote:

We're doing about one post every other day, sometimes faster, sometimes slower.

DeathQuaker wrote:

Nothing springs to mind.

Vigilante

Hi, this is Rikash chiming in with his archer Inquisitor of Pharasma. I've got my background and other details below, but there will be a proofing stage to clean all of it up later so forgive me if it's a bit rough.

Backstory:

Christoph is the orphaned son of Varisian travelers who were killed by 'dark shapes' that are thought to have been undead. His mother managed to escape with him, though she was mortally wounded in her flight. Through some miracle of will, she managed to make it to a Pharasmin temple. She was able to give only a brief explanation of what had transpired and the babe's name before she passed into the arms of the Lady of Graves.

Christoph was taken from the small temple where he had found shelter to a larger orphanage in Caliphas. He was a problematic child, lashing out in anger for the unfair hand that fate had dealt him. Despite his best efforts to flee the church, he was educated as befits a ward of church. He would come to learn of the Lady of Graves and her devotion to seeing mortals into the proper afterlife. He learned of her role as the Mistress of Fate as inheritor of Aroden's prophetic domains. He also learned of the role the undead had in his parent's death and Pharasma's hatred of their abomination. This would prove the spark that lit a fire in young Christoph's heart. His burning passion became to serve Pharasma so that no one else would suffer the tragedy that he did.

He focused his efforts as he hadn't before and began to study without the scolding of his caretakers. His turnabout was quick and he was soon seeking out his tutors to learn more and more. As he grew into adulthood, he was groomed as an applicant to the Voices of the Spire. This elite and militant wing of the Pharasmin priesthood is devoted to hunting and destruction of undead and those who would create them. Christoph's training exposed his agility and strength, but his lithe body was not suited to the front lines. He was trained as an archer, spending long hours practicing with his composite bow until he was an excellent shot. Accepted not long after he reached adulthood, Christoph would go on to serve with distinction across Ustalav.

His first few years of service were under the tutelage of the Ulfen ranger, Kjell Sjogunsson. Kjell is one of the veteran Voices in Ustalav and has served the Church for decades. The fierce warrior took Christoph under his wing, sharing his knowledge of the undead and their hunting. Kjell and Christoph served together for long years before Christoph was deemed competent enough to lead his own band of Voices. The pair have kept in touch, and Kjell gift Christoph his worn, but well loved, copy of The Bones Land in a Spiral. The book is filed with notes on the undead from years of Kjell's service and Christoph is never far from it.

Shortly after he began leading his band of Voices, Christoph was approached by the well-known and respected Professor Petros Lorrimor. Christoph and his band had run into a particularly vicious wight that terrorized the roads around Ravengro. News of its slaying at his hand spread quickly through the countryside and Professor Lorrimor had wanted to learn what he could of the creature. The two struck up a correspondence and Lorrimor served as another source of mentorship into the undead. His lectures and explanations of the metaphysical mechanics of the undead have honed Christoph's skills even further. The two built something of a rapport and Christoph was happy to keep the Professor abreast of creatures he encountered.

It's now been ten years since Christoph started his service in the voices, and he was recently saddened to hear of the death of Professor Lorrimor. He had been in the field, hunting down a band of ghouls which had been growing in numbers as they attacked travelers north of the Furrows. On his return to the Voices' chapter house, Christoph was given the sad news and he made his way to Ravengro to pay his last respects.

Appearance:

Christoph Metzger is a Varisian standing five feet and ten inches tall. He has a swarthy complexion and violet eyes which are characteristic of his people. His hair is brown, though dark enough to be readily mistaken for black. He tends to keep a beard, though it can grow wild if he doesn't have the time to keep it neat. He wears practical, battle ready gear and the red and black clothing of the Voices of Spire. On his neck, near his Adam's apple, he has the Pharasmin Spiral tattooed in blue and white. The tattoo's ink was enchanted and it can serve as a holy symbol, though he tends to use the silver symbol he was given when he became a Voice.

Personality:

Raised in the church of the Lady of Graves, Christoph is often taken to be cold, aloof, and serious. He has a stern demeanor about him that can make others nervous. His blood red tunic and cloak -the uniform of his order- does not help alleviate their discomfort. All this said, he cares about the welfare of others and sees his work as a calling to serve. The personal tragedy in his past has left him slow to trust and befriend. He has a keen eye and he readily spots those who are indulging in falsehood.

At times, he will sit apart from his companions, lost in thought as he considers the events that have brought him to his life as it is now. He, at times, wonders at Pharasma's purpose in holding her prophecy fate close to her chest. He wonders if she might have been able to save his parents. These are fleeting thoughts, as his conviction is strong and he trusts the judgement of the Mistress of Fate.

Got it!
Very, very interesting. Yeah, he should be alright; real powerful in a town/city area too.

Rhia is complete.

Her reason for not attending the funeral is that she and her older brother were investigating a case of miner's going missing or stating attack from their fellows. As it turned out they had encountered a cavern inhabited by a wight who proceeded to kill the first miners to encounter it, turning them into lesser wights. By the time they solved what was happening and managed to clear the mine, it was weeks past the funeral, which Rhia didn't find out about until she'd gotten back home.

I'll be throwing Alenthor here into the Hat. I'll get him updated over my lunch break hopefully.

This is DeathQuaker, with Nadiya leveled up.

A note: in the CC campaign she WAS in, she got as far as getting a Harrow card. I've left that on her character sheet for now. I can remove it if she shouldn't have one (indeed, I don't know if the prior GM's use of it was written into the campaign or his particular thing; ETA: although it is in the Player's Guide).

I think I goofed on something -- in choosing her spells known, I chose two spells PER SPELL LEVEL for every time she leveled. I think I should have chosen two spells every time she leveled, to be distributed between any spell levels. So she has too many known spells -- unless it is acceptable that she may have additionally had the opportunity to learn extra spells.

If she is chosen I'll fix it, otherwise.

I fixed my traits, as they were still copied from template I used (another inquisitor character of mine). To confirm, we are to have 3 traits total, correct? Two of our choosing and one specifically from the Carrion Crown list.

I have a CON this weekend. So will be away and wont post. Just giving a heads up

Dwarf Unbreakable Fighter here... updating to level four. Let me sleep on the reason the couldn't make the funeral.

I started a game of this a few years back, but it fizzled like so many PbP's do. Didn't get much farther than the funeral procession.

Here's Skiia again, now levelled up as required, complete with a rather indulgently longish explanation of why she missed Professor Lorrimor's funeral. The short of it is that Skiia was delayed by having to track a down a budding necromancer who was terrorizing villages along the same way she was travelling; while she was able to put him down fairly promptly, that left his undead servants uncontrolled, and it took her longer to clean those up as they scattered, since she felt she couldn't in good conscience leave them to eventually run into less experienced travellers.

Oh, right - and hp rolls:
1d10 + 2d6 ⇒ (1) + (5, 3) = 9 Reroll 1: 1d10 + 1d6 ⇒ (3) + (4) = 7 Reroll 2: 1d10 ⇒ 3 Reroll 3: 1d10 ⇒ 2 Reroll 4: 1d10 ⇒ 6 At last!

Are you still looking for more players? I have in fact played only the first before and would like a chance to play the rest. please let me know so I can make a character and apply officially.

You're in time. I'll likely make selections Monday.

I'm am interested in this and can post as often as needed.

Short on time I see, my background story may be short and sweet

Looking forward to seeing how this plays out. :)

Edit: It occurs to me that I never actually rolled my HP. Here are those rolls now:

L2: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
L3: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
L4: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9

Looks like I can't make something up in time. Good luck everyone!
