"Thank you for your service."

Appario readies to move along...casting the aforementioned Resist Fire 10.

Yahirma tries to remember what lies in the direction that the kolyarut points when identifying the location of the talisman, but the number of twists and turns the group has taken makes that difficult. "That seems like the direction we have been…or came from," she muses aloud. "Did we miss something?"

Male Human (Azalanti) Hp: 96/110, AC: 30 Bard 8/Fighter 4

"Well, if we came from that direction, my guess would be that the talisman might be hidden behind one of the mirrors.
We found the ring there, so it would make a certain...sense."

Once someone opens the door into the next room (whether that's now or later):

The door opens into a well-lit chamber with bookshelves along most walls, all filled to the brim with heavy tomes, while a large counter to the south is stocked with all sorts of alchemical instruments and ingredients, as well as tools suitable for magical crafting.

A massive door in the eastern wall blocks further passage, locked with four complex, intricate locks. Beside each of the four locks, a glowing phrase is inscribed on the door in Infernal.

Infernal inscription #1:

"Split in twain in life and name - Call upon the one within"

Infernal inscription #2:

"Bound by ruling hands - Call upon the crafter's name"

Infernal inscription #3:

"Under watchful eye on high - Call upon our crown and liege"

Infernal inscription #4:

"From molten metal sea to ragged rusted fortress - Call upon his onetime home"

"Hmm, I do not think we should unlock this place until we have everything we need.
I think that we might be able to learn the answer to some or all of these questions in the library once we are ready."

The Beast rumbles impatiently and paws the grounds with his shadowy hooves.

Let's check out that library.

Male Human (Taldan) Abadaran Militant 12

Appario looks over the inscriptions wondering what they say.

He will follow The Beast to the library.

Female Changeling (Mauxi Mwangi) Mwangi Spiritualist 12

Yahirma gazes upon the library with wonder. "Quite the collection!" She casts detect magic to search for any 'low-hanging fruit' before inspecting the alchemical equipment and scanning the spines of the books for any relevant texts.

Craft (alchemy): 1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 8 + 2 = 29
Perception: 1d20 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 + 2 = 6

Male Human (Azalanti) Hp: 96/110, AC: 30 Bard 8/Fighter 4

"Hmmm, "Call upon his onetime home"...I believe that perhaps the riddles are all related to Liebdaga or the people who put him here.
So I guess we should start looking for references about him in the books."

While the books indeed comprise quite a collection, Yahirma's quick scan doesn't provide any insight into which tomes may contain information currently relevant.

Her magical scan provides more immediate results; the crystal ball in the previous room is magical, as is the light-source in this room. All four locks on the massive door radiate magic. Among the books, one tome is magical, while the alchemical counter contains a pair of magical glasses, a magical periapt, two magical rings, and a wizard's spellbook.

Yahirma's alchemical knowledge allows her to recognize the laboratory as a fully outfitted alchemist's lab, with enough tools to enhance magical crafting as well as alchemical preparations. Ledges above the counter contain up to five of every known alchemical remedy, alchemical tool, and alchemical weapon (two of those costing 100 gp or more), plus at least one vial of each known poison (two of each poison costing less than 1000 gp). Drawers within the counter contain all manner of spell components and ingredients for alchemical and magical crafting.

Male Human (Azalanti) Hp: 96/110, AC: 30 Bard 8/Fighter 4

"So...each lock is part of the whole puzzle, and each lock has an inscription in infernal.
Each one is a riddle, and my guess is each riddle has a solution that is somewhat tied to Liebdaga.
What we need is...
No, hang on, IF I'm RIGHT, then we need something that details Liebdagas history, but I MIGHT not be right.
Does anyone else have any ideas? We don't have too much time to waste, so let's not jump on my suggestion if someone else has a better one."

Male Human (Taldan) Abadaran Militant 12

Appario shakes his head.

"I barely understand what it means. All these words...so confuzzling."

Female Changeling (Mauxi Mwangi) Mwangi Spiritualist 12

"If we need Liebdagan history, I can think of few better l=places to look than here," Yahirma states in response to Derek's musing as she begins to examine the magical items more closely.

Spellcraft for crystal ball: 1d20 + 17 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 17 + 2 = 30
Spellcraft for tome: 1d20 + 17 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 17 + 2 = 22

Spellcraft for periapt: 1d20 + 17 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 17 + 2 = 22

"This is an especially well-stocked work room, and its contents are worth a fortune. I'm going to perform a bit of research and could use some assistance skimming books. Anyone else can start packing up some of that," she says with a wave toward the spell components and poisons. "It's hard to say for sure what might happen to this complex once Liebdaga is defeated, but it would be a shame to lose all of this if the finale involves explosions or quickly-crumbling ceilings."

Curse you, divination! Why must your casting time be 10 minutes?

Male Human (Taldan) Abadaran Militant 12

Appario inhales deeply, then exhales.

"Maybe we spend the night here at rest? The guardian will prevent others from joining us. The fiend is still bound. And we have much research to do. We could uncover...a wealth...of information here," Appario suggests.

"Maybe we have done enough for right now. We might have time to prepare moreso."

Sounds like a plan.

Disappointed at the lack of battle, the Beast snorts derisively and disperses into harmless smoke and shadow.

Left in his place, the dazed Maddok rubs his head. "So we are to spend the night in this place?"

Male Human (Azalanti) Hp: 96/110, AC: 30 Bard 8/Fighter 4

"May I make a suggestion then? Dealing with the rest of the mirrors might sap our resources further, and it is better to do it now so we can recover as much as possible rather than wait until we have rested and then begin to drain ourselves right away again."

Male Human (Taldan) Abadaran Militant 12

Appario shrugs at Derek, slowly turning the shrug into a nod.

"Yeah, sure, we could do that. I didn't like those mirrors much," Appario says, gathering his stuff.

"What do you think, Yahirma? Go see what we can find behind the mirrrors?"

Yahirma identifies a crystal ball w/telepathy, spectacles of understanding, a ring of alchemy (+5 to craft [alchemy]), a ring of spellcraft (+5 to spellcraft), and a periapt of proof against poison. She's unable to identify the book.

The crystal ball is linked to a single nearby location, and it seems that the link would need to be broken before it could be used to scry on other locations.

The Beast alternates between snorting impatiently and sniffing the air.

Anything that can be determined with scent here?

Female Changeling (Mauxi Mwangi) Mwangi Spiritualist 12

Yahirma accompanies her companions as they return to the room of many portrait-mirrors.

All right, infernal artwork, do your worst. Slightly perturbed at the possibilities of what that might involve, she revises her challenge. Okay, reflective visual media, I dare you to scare me...in such a way that doesn't kill me from shock outright.

Yahirma fails her Will save against a mirror at random. If it deals Wisdom damage to here like the other one did, she heals herself.

Random mirror #1: 1d5 ⇒ 4
Random mirror #2: 1d4 ⇒ 3
Random mirror #3: 1d3 ⇒ 3
Random mirror #4: 1d2 ⇒ 2

The first mirror Yahirma tries, depicting the frozen realm of Cocytus, fills her with a strong sense of lethargy as the vision of Liebdaga discovers her presence. Adding to this lethargy is Strength damage: 1d6 ⇒ 4. Once opened, the mirror reveals a magical ring.

Next, she peers into the mirror depicting Hell's training ground, Malebolge. The sensation here is one of bloodlust, accompanied by Yahirma being confused for Rounds: 1d10 ⇒ 6. The alcove behind this mirror holds a magical trident.

Then, gazing at the prison realm of Cania, hopelessness fills her mind, and she suffers Negative levels: 1d4 ⇒ 2 and becomes exhausted. Hidden behind this mirror is a magical rope.

Finally, the mirror showing the sprawling city of Dis fills her with a sense of insignificance, dealing Charisma damage: 1d6 ⇒ 5 in the process. A magical rod lies in this mirror's alcove.

Assuming Yahirma continues with the last/first mirror:

Which leaves only a single, unopened mirror, the one showing the apocalyptic wasteland of Avernus. This mirror's reflection fills her with an incredibly strong sense of homesickness, and she finds herself sickened as a result. When the mirror lowers, a talisman showing a pair of intertwined twins is found behind it.

Yahirma wrote:
Knowledge (planes) plus natural revelation using the library to research Liebdaga, his history, his imprisonment, and his weaknesses

By spending about an hour thumbing through various tomes and scrolls, Yahirma is able to piece quite a bit about the pit fiend's history.

Once merely an ordinary pit fiend, Liebdaga gained tremendous notoriety throughout Hell after a battle he fought against a solar, where the angel delivered a killing blow (the scar across his abdomen a permanent reminder of the fact) but his twin soul instantly resurrected him and allowed him to return the favor in a more permanent manner. The outcome of this battle, as well as the epic nature of its end, resulted in his promotion to the position of infernal duke. For ages thereafter, Liebdaga served on Avernus, as lord of an Iron Citadel guarding the entrance to Erebus.

At some point, a talisman surfaced that was said to possess a great influence over Liebdaga. None of the tomes or scrolls provide any insight into where this talisman came from or who created it, but it's clear that the Thrunish wizards who imprisoned the fiend were in possession of this talisman, and used it to great effect during their struggle to contain him. The wizards were led by Abrogail I's nephew, Terthule (who some time later himself came to rule Cheliax), and the order came from the Majestrix's own hand.

Apart from the existence of the talisman, Liebdaga's only true weakness may be his reliance on being resurrected by his twin nature, which could possibly make him overly reckless in battle. Beyond the resurrection-aspect, Liebdaga's twin nature also grants him immunity to mind-affecting effects, but according to at least one source the talisman can break this immunity.

Yahirma travels between mirrors in an increasingly delirious state. "Ah, a ring," she announces with a hint of fatigue before staring transfixed at another mirror.

Offended that no one is understanding her obvious panic, she tries to claw out Derek's eyes.

Confusion: 1d100 ⇒ 88

"—Hryaaaa!" She tries to claw him again.

Confusion: 1d100 ⇒ 31

"Trupletop-muffin. Upside is the quantum fishcake salad hat! Eh Wombat three-prong spaceship?" she exclaims as an apology.

"—Hryaaaa!" Again disappointed by no one understanding her, she tries to punish Derek.
1d20 + 7 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (10) + 7 + 2 - 2 = 17

Embarrassed, she smiles weakly, mumbles an apology, and stumbles over to the next mirror, which causes her legs to give out. She then drags herself over to a fourth mirror and admits defeat face-down. "Foun an…mmu'et," she murmurs, pointing at the latest alcove. She then casts a few spells, feels a little better, then stumbles over to the last two mirrors to repeat the process.

I think there were two others, right?

3 Strength back, 4 Charisma, 2 Wisdom, then 1 Charisma from lesser restoration

Later on, she reports on her findings. "It appears that Liebdaga is not just just a pit fiend; he is a full-fledged infernal duke that once guarded the way to Erebus--that was Mammon's realm. If you recall, I think the Mother of Flies mentioned something about Mammon's hand in recent events. Either way, a talisman..." she glances at the talisman rcovered from the last mirror. "...a talisman surfaced that was capable of controlling Liebdaga (at least partly). House Thrune used it to control him and probably bind him. The infernal duke is impossible to charm or control except by someone who has the talisman.

"Now for some worse news. Liebdaga has some sort of twin form, and I think he only really dies if both forms die. Maybe. As a spot of good news, he seems to be rather reckless for a devil, as he relies on this quasi-invulnerability to pull him out of tight spots. We might be able to exploit that recklessness somehow. Perhaps if we can trap both forms here...we could destroy both at once?"

As an afterthought, she adds, "Oh, and he personally killed a solar, virtually the most powerful angel known to the multiverse."

Once we're getting ready to rest, Yahirma expends a 5th-level spell slot to add a charge to the staff of healing

I didn't know she knew that language, but the pronunciation is all...

Having Yahirma jumping at him like a crazy woman with claws like a cat was obviously a shock, luckily, trying to scratch the eyes of a man in full plate armour is pretty hard, especially when the stumble backward makes the visor slam down.

"Are you...whoa!"

Again?

If the first time was surprising, Derek did NOT expect the second attack, or for that matter, the third one.

After the situation calms down and Yahirma begins to explain what she learned Derek rubs his chin, or tries to, still having the visor down makes that an exercise in futility.

"So Liebdaga is definatly Split in twain in life and name...which probably means that I was right about the other answers is depending on him.
So, is Erebus the name of his onetime home?"

"I hope you're not asking me that. I still can barely believe that I've been wrong about all this. I never really believed much of it. I thought Liebdaga was, well, a *lie*. And why wouldn't that be the case? Create a boogey monster then use that to scare people into power, rather than just buying power and influence as is proper. Tis strange."

Maddok wrote:

Nothing happens during the night.

Yahirma identifies a minor ring of fire resistance, a +2 returning mithral trident, and a lesser metamagic rod of quicken. She's unable to identify the rope.

The talisman is an artifact called the talisman of the twin, which provides its wearer some measure of control over the infernal duke Liebdaga the Twin. Simply wearing it affords protection against Liebdaga's attacks similar to a sanctuary spell (except the protection can't be broken by a Will save), as well as immunity to his fear aura. As long as the wearer is within 15 ft, Liebdaga loses his immunity to mind-affecting effects.

In addition, if the wearer is within 30 ft, he or she can brandish the talisman forcefully against Liebdaga as a move action to sicken him for 1 round (except with a -4 penalty instead of a -2 penalty). It can also be similarly brandished to stagger him for 1 round, but this breaks the sanctuary effect.

Female Changeling (Mauxi Mwangi) Mwangi Spiritualist 12

"The mirrors were imbued with potent magic, and they hid potent magic," Yahirma observes with a degree of awe. "Each of these has a magic aura. The trident can be thrown with ease, and each time it returns to be thrown again. Note that it is made of mithral, which means it is very good for wounding lesser devils. The ring shields the wearer against flames--not quite as well as my magic does, but the ring's enchantment will last for years upon years." She slides a few other items across the table. "Xerath, this rod is capable of channeling magic with great speed, though I think its enchantment could not handle your most potent spells. Nonetheless, I suspect you could cast spells twice as quickly with it. Just be warned that its magic recharges slowly and can burn out if used too often.

"Finally," she announces with reverence, "We have Liebdaga's talisman--the one I mentioned earlier. It is like a sanctified icon to a vampire; if presented forcefully, Liebdaga is weakened. If worn, it wards against his attacks, though he can overcome his fear of it if the wearer attacks him. It seems that the talisman knows its power over the infernal duke, for anyone wearing it is immune to the supernatural fear he exudes.

"Should we face him, as it seems increasingly likely that we shall do, one of us will need to brandish this as if it were a weapon. Any less conviction would make the gestures meaningless."

It seems Yahirma would probably be the one to use this thanks to her rarely-used move actions and lower number of offensive options; however, Derek is the group's traditional artifact/talisman-bearer and the one who realized that Liebdaga was at large. I'm open to these and any other preferences.

A little later, Yahirma begins connecting dots on the walls with charcoal, studying the strange shapes that arise from her meditative artwork.

Spells reset from rest. Natural divination will all be +4 initiative (use the first two at will, and save one for Liebdaga) as I'm fresh out of sacrificial animals and flights of birds.

Finally, Yahirma has one 5th-level spell slot open before resting. If anyone needs a splash of ability damage healed or some other ill removed, give a shout.
