Given that I failed the Perception check, I need to know what I'd otherwise been expecting - were these supposed to be friends or foes, and if the former, what were we supposed to be meeting them for? Forgive me if any of this had already been covered.

![]() |

Ok, the story so far. Not long ago, Lady Darchana hosted a party. At the party, she discovered a magical scrying sensor linked to one of her guest's servants. She attempted to find out who was spying on her party through the slave, but failed, and destroyed the object on the slave that was being used for the scrying magic. She then asked the Pathfinder Society to look into it. You started by trying to question Lady Silviani, (the guest whose slave had been targeted), only to find out she had left town to avoid scandal.
Instead, you talked to her head servant and questioned Atlag herself, you find she has no idea what is going on, but are then directed to speak with Mahdi, the man who sold the slave. Traveling to Mahdi's shop, you find that he is being attacked by a local group of thugs, and after saving him, negotiate for the information you need. He acquired the slaves from the crew of the ship the "At Sea", along with others who had been sold to nobles all over Absalom, giving you a list of names and also telling you that he is expecting another shipment tonight from the At Sea, a group of pirates.
You then went to report in with Lady Darchana, neglected to give her some of the information you had discovered (misunderstanding?). She, being a lesser councilwoman, gave you a letter authorizing you to travel through the Ship Graveyard of Absalom to find the At Sea and whoever is attempting to spy on the nobles of Absalom. With a row boat and a guide, you have negotiated the Graveyard and are coming up to a ship named "KAT SEASON". <This one part is my fault. The name Kat Season" was also in the spoiler, along with the other part that needed to be hidden>. The crew on the main deck clearly seas you.

![]() |

I get all that (aside from failing to communicate something we'd learned - yes, certainly a misunderstanding for me) - but given that I've failed to recognize that the "Kat Season" is in fact the ship we're looking for, what am I expecting from it? Friend? Foe? Neutral to the Slibs? Are we deliberately coming astride it, or just trying to pass by since it's disguised? That's what I need to know to determine what I'm doing right now.

![]() |

Others made the check. I'm assuming that it's just slowing for the weekend and the beginning of the Game Day, but that others will share more. If it is actually the kAT SEAson, it is a pirate ship of slavers waiting to make contact with Mahdi's men to sell more slaves, and you do have legal sanction to collect a bounty on the ship. Now, from what you cans see, they clearly notice you approaching, and while they do look suspicious, (you are not sure why), they are not reading to attack.

![]() |

In that case, I try as an individual to avoid their notice Stealth: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (11) + 11 = 22 and then cast sleep (DC 14) on them.

![]() |

Ailil's Perception was indeed enough. The DC was 15, and you rolled a 21.

Fenn is quickly coming to realize that being a Pathfinder requires quite a bit more thinking than he was prepared for.
Keeping his voice as low, he addresses his companions, "So, they's crimnals, right? Only, they's seen us, and they's not raisin' a fuss. So, it's got me thinking maybe they think that we're someone else. So, I'm thinking we could pretend..." Hearing Xyu's voice, he stops and glances up the Wayang and then across to the ship.
"...or, we could do magics and jump aboard. Wanna yell up to 'em in case they still don't 'spect us?"

![]() |

Cal turns to Finn.Agreed let's try not to show our hand just yet but you might want to get ready for a fight. Cal draws his bow and. "Why the ne change? Wasn't sure we found the right ship..."

![]() |

I meant to communicate everything. That's why I asked the rest of the party if I had relayed it right--I was counting on the party to fill in whatever I had left out.
As the party makes their way to the harbor, Glomtin bows out, saying he will send Silver Warden to help.

The Half-Orc, obviously now their leader in some capacity calls out to you, "Stay back an' state yur bus'ess!"
The suddenly one of the Gnolls simply drops one of the crates he had been working with, lays down and begins to snore. Seeing that, the other Gnoll looks at it curiously, not understanding what just happened, and deep down snickering at the idea of his crewmate being beaten for sleeping on the job. But the Half-Orc realizes something is up and calls out, "Wake that worthless fool up. We are under attack. Cut the ladder. Cut it now."
Due to the spell's area, you can only hit one, so I'll just go with #2, the closest).
Will Save DC 14: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (12) + 0 = 12 <Fail>
If they manage to cut the rope ladder, it will be much more difficult to get aboard the ship, and now you may need to do so under fire. Can I get some Str Checks from two players who are rowing the boat. That will be your action for the round until you get closer.

I need Finn's action real fast, and also Silver Warden, can you clarify a bit more on what exactly you are Readying Against? Normally I'm not too much of a stickler for that, but it might matter in this case.

Nice
Fenn and Ailil manage to bring the rowboat right up to the side, blocking most view for ranged attacks, but allowing you to make an easy jump over to the knotted rope ladder.
Right now it requires a DC 5 Acrobatics check and a DC 5 Climb check to jump to and then climb the ladder. You can Take 10, (but let me know that's what you are doing).
Van sends a bolt flying that catches the Gnoll in the chest, causing him to become a bit stagger for a moment before he drops to a knee, hiding fully behind the ships side wall. The Half-Orc leader draws his sword as he moves, also drawing a potion as he moves forward, then likewise drops low behind cover.
Also, it's worth noting that the jump and climb itself will require 35ft worth of movement.

-Posted with Wayfinder

![]() |

You may have just not rolled high enough, or the GM didn't think the Orc did enough to trigger it. Purely speculation as I don't think mine would've hit either.

![]() |

Not sure if I'm up yet or not, but I have time now and may not have time later.
Muttering under his breath, Fenn makes a jump for the rope and tries to climb onto the ship.
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
climb: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13

Fenn only has 30ft of movement, so the whole thing would take 2 moves. If possible he'll ready his sword as part of the second move. Otherwise, he'll just move out of the way.

So my readied attack didn't trigger against the half-orc?

By the time the Half-Orc had moved up, the boat you are all on had come to close to the ship, so there was no real line of sight/effect. I was going to allow it to go off as he began to move, but I figured I'd let you save the arrow (missing) if you keep track of it.
As the rowboat comes much closer to the ship, close enough to leap out, Xasay grabs his drawing pad, quickly jotting down a picture. As he forms the rough outline, the darkness itself seems to come alive and take shape, first simply a dark patch against the darkness, only seen as it blacks out the stars while it moves, but then forming the shape of a bird of prey, and taking on color and form. It dives, attacking the Half-Orc, and drawing blood.

It does (probably) take a double move to jump over and climb up, but if you have a BaB of +1 or more, you can draw a weapon as part of that move.

A for effort, DM, but you're actually thinking of the wrong kind of 'stencil'; these are 2-dimensional metal figurines on long handles that you hold against a light source to project shadows.

Silver Warden, Ailil, and Van Helsing all make the leap over to the rope and begint he climb up, with the Half-Orc, batting away at the shadow Eagle, taking a single swing at the crew as they do, taking a large chunk out of Van Helsing. (I also moved you back to your max distance)
