AC 27

Wulfram stabs Rovalda twice, his spear driving deep into her chest. She coughs up blood as her eyes roll up in her head and she slowly drifts to the ground.

I guess it doesn't matter much if you fail your saves against confusion now, since the fight's over.

Rovalda has: potion of cure serious wounds, scrolls of sending (2), scroll of telekinesis, wand of lesser confusion (20 charges), wand of shield (37 charges), mwk breastplate, +1 spell storing punching dagger (currently holds vampiric touch), belt of mighty constitution +2, cloak of reisstance +1, gold and ruby necklace (250 gp), 23 gp. The guards have four sets of the following gear: +1 full plate, +2 dwarven waraxe, mwk heavy crossbow, amulet of natural armor +1, cloak of resistance +1, ring of protection +1.

Additionally, among the remains of the beetle you find a lockbox. Inside is 310 pp, 1,638 gp, and 17 rings of lead and malachite worth 75 gp each. You also find the ownership papers for the trox slves and a copy of the church charter of a duergar monastery to Droskar.

Well, if Rogar gets the Attacks Nearest Creature result, he might kill someone. :(
The next round, Wulfram can cast Calm Emotions (removes the confused condition).

Rogar Confusion: 1d100 ⇒ 57

Rogar just punches himself in the face, so it's all good. :)

Karla slaps herself, then wakes just in time to see Rogar do the same, and bursts out laughing, as the tension of battle leaves her body.

Was she a sorceress? Karla wonders as she calms down and walks up to the slowly falling corpse. Slavers were barely better than the Legion, but barely better still meant Karla saw all this death as a missed opportunity... Looking at the dead corpse, she wonders if she, Karla, would have attacked differently, or whether the outcome was inevitable, and the duergar simply did not know who she was facing.

"She should have known. Illusions are hard, and no one not worth her salt would venture here... Perhaps she felt a responsibility to her people? That's why she attacked? To save those she cherished?"

She then checks her illusion to verify whether it was still active.

Is Veil still on?

"Drows are not that great here, plus we need more of us to speak Undercommon. Rogar should be teaching us, yes?"

The veil is still active.

"What I mean is: Should we choose Duergars? She sounded like this was their territory..."

"Nik'o has been injured badly... Let's work on languages whenever we have a chance then. Undercommon is the obvious one, butperhaps there are other we need against the Legion?"

"And yes, let's have us look like duergars. Any suggestions? Should I try to make us look like these guys? If so, then Rogar would have to be the matron..." and she gives Rogar a wide smile.

Karla nods and concentrates to veil the party anew, this time looking like duergars resembling the group they've just met.

The underground lake here is filled with blind fish and aggressive insects. Crossing the lake presents little challenge, and you continue into the side tunnels from the main path of the Long Walk.

Nearly 30 miles of untamed caverns and tunnels connect the lower levels of Kraggodan to the Long Walk, and along this route your journey requires more spelunking than walking. Narrow ledges, sheer climbs, sudden drop-offs, switchbacks, and tight passageways mark most of this journey. Closer to Kraggodan, more and more of the tunnels transition into lava tubes, gas vents, and other features of the volcano network that helped to shape the Mindspin Mountain range (and created the cave systems that helped guide the dwarves to the surface thousands of years earlier).

You rest once along the way, and the next afternoon, you enter a spacious chamber. Highly reflective crystals protrude from the cavernous walls. The interiors of some of the crystal formations glow with a white light that illuminates the entire area. A connecting tunnel in the stone continues to the north, while a smaller passage slopes down to the northeast.

Wulfram helped the others navigate the difficult caverns, scouting out the route with the aid of his overland Flight spell, and helping his comrades climb difficult sections.

When they reached the large chamber with the glowing walls, he looked for hostile creatures, and then flew forward to have a closer look at the crystal formations.

Karla struggles through the ordeal. Very far from her zone of comfort, she slipped and fell several times, until Nik'o moved in to nudge her and serve as support in any way she could.

At the sight of the chamber, she pauses and takes in the beauty and magnificence of the sight: "I'm... speechless. Such beauty..."

Then she laughs and throws a small light show using her cantrips to study how the light reflects on the walls, playing, dancing, and laughing.

While his allies admire the crystals themselves, Rogar closes his eyes and makes sure that there's nothing hiding in the room unseen, using his tremorsense. Should he not notice anything, he steps into the floor and checks the passageways a little ways down, ensuring the area is safe.

Perception: 1d20 + 23 ⇒ (1) + 23 = 24

Both Wulfram and Rogar notice the presence of creatures nearby. As Karla's lights dance throughout the chamber, two of the crystalline formations shift and vibrate, as if in anticipation.

Eustoma and Karla may act before the enemies. They're 30 feet away and 30 feet apart.

Knowledge (dungeoneering) DC 21:
These strange oozes are known as carnivorous crystals. They entrap their prey and crystallize them to feast on the minerals in their blood and bone. They are immune cold and electricity and resist fire and most weapon attacks. They are brittle, though, vulnerable to sonic and bludgeoning attacks.

Karla frowns at the disruption and pulls the darkest of tentacles from underneath the nearest threat.

Damage: 3d6 + 15 - 10 ⇒ (4, 4, 3) + 15 - 10 = 16

Karla's tentacles reach for the slithering crystal oozes, but they are unable to grab a hold.

Eustoma fires a barrage of arrows at the nearest one, the clustered shots punching through its resistance.

The crystals move slowly through the tentacles, trying to get to you. As they do, they emit a subsonic hum that leaves you reeling!

The oozes move 10 feet closer. Everybody must make a DC 22 Fortitude save or be stunned for 1 round. Everybody who is not stunned may act!

Fortitude: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25

Karla manages to keep her cool, despite the humming. This time, she choses something more direct and places a wall of fire between them and the crystals: "We just need to move through this place!"

And she makes her way towards the way out (unless it sits behind those creatures... Nik'o stands guard near her, ready to attack the crystals should they move out of the tentacles.

Wulfram reeled from the sonic assault, trying in vain to block out the overwhelming hum.

The ceiling's not that high here, Wulfram, so you'll just float to the ground without taking damage.

While the humming overwhelms most of you, Rogar resists its effects and hurls a powerful blast at one of the crystal oozes. It shatters into fragments!

Karla conjures a wall of fire in front of the other ooze, but the flames don't seem to do much to harm the creature. However, the tentacles manage to grab a hold of it this time, keeping it from moving closer.

The ooze struggles to free itself, but it is unable to escape the tentacles!

CMB: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (8) + 18 = 26

I'll assume Rogar is able to blast the other one and destroy it.

Another blast from Rogar annihilates the grappled creature, removing the dangers from the cavern.

I'm guessing the humming stops.

Karla goes to Nik'o to make sure she's otherwise unfazed, playing with the fur on her forehead.

"Lots of nasty surprises in these caves, even for duergar... We better move on. Wulfram, when you can, my staff could use some of your fire to rekindle its power."

Wulfram took a moment to recover from the hum. He replied to Karla, "Sure, I'll recharge it tomorrow morning."

My understanding is that you recharge staves when you memorize spells in the morning. I don't know if you can recharge them after meditating later on.

He looked around the chamber and asked the dwarf, "Rogar, do you think these crystals are valuable?" While they discussed the matter, he cast a spell and scanned for magic auras.

Eustoma and Sia both shake as the humming stops. "Those were interesting. This place isn't like the woods. I know about things in the woods. Down here is just so strange." She'll help gather crystals if they are valuable.

Though the crystals lining the wall are relatively worthless quartz, something has carved several into grotesque works of art. Eight 3-foot lengths of quartz have been cut into elegant, unsettling columns of mouths, eyes, and tendrils (worth 300 gp each).

Wulfram's spell uncovers a magical aura coming from a set of large needles that has also been shaped from the crystals and enchanted into needles of fleshgraving.

You can take the main passage north or go down the side tunnel to the east.

Rogar slips into the wall, and investigates down each passage from inside the stone.

While they're waiting, Karla says: "Sure, we can do it in the morning, but it will use up your casting for that day. Maybe just a tiny spell... or two!"

Dozens of tiny cracks mar the otherwise glassy-smooth walls of the small alcove at the end of the east passage. Dozens of stone boulders bar passage east from this chamber.

Knowledge (dungeoneering) or Survival DC 20:
A subtle odor alerts you to the presence of carbauxine--a heavy, flammable gas many dwarven settlements harvest to fuel their forges or heat their homes. Any spark or flame in here could trigger a massive explosion. Cold energy would render the gas temporarily inert.

The north passage opens up onto a large chamber. Small white crystals coat every surface in this grand chamber, lending it the appearance of a winter landscape. The entire chamber is like a wide kaleidoscope of shifting white and gray patterns, reflecting along the jutting rocks of the cavern.

A pair of serpentine nagas are here, apparently bickering back and forth. Each has a humanoid head and a snakelike body adorned with black and red scales. One of the nagas is coiled around a massive, four-armed insectile creature that docilely tolerates her presence.

Knowledge (nature) DC 20:
The insectile creature is a trox, likely one of the slaves that escaped the duergar.

He went back to consult with his team-mates, "There's a highly flammable gas down that way. Any spark or open flame could set off a huge explosion. Cold would render the gas temporarily inert. I could meditate and memorize a cold spell if we wanted to try to get through that way."

Wulfram could memorize Cone of Cold with his open 6th level slot.

I'm assuming that Rogar found that once we clear the passage, we will be able to continue past the Nagas.

Wulfram replied, "I think we just want to get to Kraggodan as fast as we can. I don't see any reason to fight the Nagas if we don't have to."

He found a safe place and sat down with Pele to meditate, preparing a spell of her feared element. He assured her, *It will allow us to get through the blocked passage, without collapsing it with an explosion.*

Wulfram uses his spell to neutralize the carbauxine gas, then Rogar effortlessly moves the boulders aside to open up the side psssage. It bypasses the nagas' cavern and opens onto a chamber on the far side.

This chamber is swelteringly hot, and a warm orange light shines from a northeastern passage. Crude paintings of a three-eyed circle with bat wings line the walls.

With his natural stonecunning, Rogar immediately notices several structural inconsistencies in the floor and walls of this chamber. The floor appears to be exceptionally weak--just a thin crust of stone over molten lava. Treading across it might prove hazardous.
