Gatherine 'Taboofox' Deepheavy |
Huh.Footprints...leading out to sea?
Gatherine lifted her head with a start when she realized Tol was addressing her.Listening closely, she watched his face and saw suspicion and umbrage.Iolana also gazed at her in accusation.
The dwarf maid puffed up indignantly when she realized what she was being asked.Oi!You think I did this? I worked hard on that stew-- why would I ruin perfectly good food? And besides,Alton served it up.He chopped the blasted door down with an axe because I didn't want that filthy Ebenezer or that scrawny Terillo ruining dinner!
Iolana Zerengo |
"I just asked, it obvious we start questioning someone we know was there.I'ld like to ask Anton or Ebenezer too, but we should first find a way to get back to the ship"
Iolana too looks away at the ship, with a hint of sadness in her eyes.
"Or we can stop accusing each other and start walking, in the hope to find a settlement or a village, something with dock and a inn"
And we have to be very careful in case we meet someone around here.
Gatherine 'Taboofox' Deepheavy |
Well, that's what is sounded like.I know Ebenezer couldn't have done it because I threw out the mess he was planning on serving us.I got him blind drunk and stuffed him into a crate. Then I started cleaning everything I could--that gross old man didn't believe in soap and a scrub. After I had the stew simmering,Terillo tried to call himself 'fixing' it by adding more water and I gave him the boot before he could tamper with my food.I blocked the door with a keg of ale and some crates so I wouldn't be interrupted.I had just finished the fruit and nut pies when Alton burst in with an axe and chased me out!
Gatherine shook a finger. I'd say it was either Terillo or Alton!
Tol Cherthand |

"Easy, Gatherine, easy," Tol remonstrates, "Just trying to figure out what's going on here. You may be a daft, irresponsible, disrespectful youngling..." he holds up a hand to delay the inevitable retort, "but I don't reckon you poisoned yourself just to have an adventure. And I don't reckon you'd have brought me along if you did!"
He turns to Iolana, who is still helping him fasten all the complicated buckles of his armor. "Thank you, ma'am. As for moving on, I can see the sense in that, and for sticking together. It may be that one of us," he glances darkly around the group, "knows more than they're telling, but we'll do better together than alone, especially if this island is as dangerous as you say. Though, if it is a haven of... ghosts and cannibals, and what have you, it seems unlikely we'll find a dock or an inn."
DM Bloodgargler |
The tide starts to recede .. you see the tips of jagged rocks peeking out of the water all around. Some broken slabs of wood are hung up on a larger outcropping maybe 100 yards out to sea. As attention is directed to the Jenivere, you start to see it more clearly as the water level drops. It appears to have serious breaks in the hull .. looks like it partially sunk and beached on the jagged rocks.
Iolana Zerengo |
"Well Mr. Cherthand, this settles things. It is unlikely we can take the wreckage here and repair it in few hours if ever, so we can only move from here before someone or something finds us"
Iolana looks around trying to determine which direction to take
Survival or Sailor 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
In case Sickened is still active the result is 2 pnts lower
Mugambi |
Looking at the sunk ship Mugambi feels his desperation rising and tries to control it.
Dis island is cursed alright!
Looking to the heavens.
Damn ya spiritss!
The mwangi takes a deep breath, pauses for a few seconds, scratches his head and gives the Jenivere a sad look.
Maybe we should check out da ships, there maybe be other people there, supplies, food, water, sails to build raft and mapss to go home...
This iss bad place, cursed good. Mugambi dont want to stay here if we can avoid.
Gelik the Gnome |
In addition to your gear, you find a crate with a dozen trail rations a tinderbox and ten full waterskins. On top of these supplies is a pack filled with what looks like First Mate Alton's gear.
Gelik grabs a waterskin and starts chugging .. "Ahh .. soo much better " he then fishes around for a ration, sniffs it, then plops down in the sand munching away... "Was feeling like my organs were turning on each other .. "
Gatherine 'Taboofox' Deepheavy |
Gatherine eyed the waterskins with a skeptical air. Oi,how are we to know that the waterskins ain't tainted by whatever knocked us out?Whoever set this up might be playing with usjust to watch us flounder about like fools.Maybe we're here to do someone else's dirty work and we're unwitting pawns in their game!
An anxious look entered her eyes and she started to fidget. I say we take a vote--search the island or the shipwreck first.I wanna see if there's anything we could use before we go wandering off into the bush!
Tol Cherthand |
Tol shudders at Mugambi's reaction. "Aye, I reckon we all want to be off this island quick as we can." He gazes out at the Jenivere. "Ach, so the ship sank on the rocks. There's still foul play afoot; that food didn't poison itself. But maybe whoever brought us here was trying to rescue us, not maroon us." He looks at the remaining gear on the raft. "Alton, maybe. He always seemed like a friendly lad, axing the galley door notwithstanding. But where has he got to now? Back to the ship, like the doctor's suggestion?" Tol looks down at his heavy scale mail, and at the jagged rocks and pounding waves between the beach and the Jenivere. "If ye do want to go check the ship... I'll stay here with Gorra and... guard the supplies, I reckon."
Tol is finally going to take a look around for clues. Perception: 1d20 ⇒ 1 (Glad I got THAT out of the way!)
Iolana Zerengo |
"I was starting to fear i had to do another strip tease in less than twenty minutes."
With a sad smile, Iolana is still looking at what is left of the Jenivere, than she turn to Gatherine and while nodding toward Gelik says to the dwarven girl "Seems like we won't have to wait much for the answer;if Gelik survives the rations are good"
"Seriously now,i could swim to the ship if really needed to,but to me it seems like wasting time and taking unnecessary risks.Who wants to try the same or feel like taking a swim over there?"
Gelik the Gnome |
Gelik listens to you and his chewing slows for a bit .. then shrug's and keeps eating "Feems fine to me" spewing crumbs ..
Although they all seem curious .. none of the others seem to have any interest in going anywhere themselves. Aerys and Sasha take their "share" of rations and water, but wait and watch Gelik before ingesting anything.
"Look at me .. center of attention.." Gelik says as he brushes the crumbs from his shirt.
The beach where you are looks like a "U" shape, with you and the others at the bottom, and the ship beached at the top right of the "U".
DM Bloodgargler |
either .. but either way, jagged rocks could be a natural hazard to the uncoordinated .. the "jetty" looks like a naturally forming of rocks that stick out like a sandbar .. to put in game terms: Climb plus swim checks (going by swimming) or climb and acro checks {trying to go by foot), would be about the same DCs.
Iolana Zerengo |
"How good are you at swimming Gatherine? Looks like we cannot avoid a little dive. And surely it'll be less dangerous by only swimming,we'ld avoid those sharp rocks. The bad part is whoever is going, must be as much undressed as it is possible, and once aboard we probably won't have time to wear our gear back if something happens. This is why i said it was too risky"
DM Bloodgargler |
Tol Cherthand |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Tol's massive eyebrows furrow in concern. He glances briefly to Gatherine, then says quietly to Iolana, "Miss, I really think it would be better if Miss Gatherine didn't go. She's still quite young, and as her father's representative, I feel that it is much too dangerous for her. Surely someone else could go... Mmm... One of the half-elves, maybe? Mr. Grey looks like quite a strong swimmer..."
Gatherine 'Taboofox' Deepheavy |
Gatherine hesitated, put off by the fact they wouldn't be using the raft. She didn't fancy tripping and impaling herself on salt encrusted stones either. Her perked up when she overheard Tol's whispered suggestion to Iolana.Sneering, she started to divest herself of her armor and sash.
I said that I'm going. I'm grown!
Mugambi |
Yae, I will go with da ladies. But I taking the land path. Mugambi swims like a brick.
Mugambi go back to the pile of supplies, take his share, starts to unstraping his armor and make a small pile of his stuff.
Better leave this here, Mugambi can climb like brick too.
I am taking with me my melee weapons, my backpack, shield straped to my back, belt with pouches, a waterskin, hemp rope and a grappling hook. The rest of my gear is staying in the beach with Tol.
I like ya theory about Alton friend Tol. He was good man and his stuff are here, hope he is alright.
By the way, what is Alton's gear that we found at the raft?
Iolana Zerengo |
Such vehemence
Iolana looks again toward the crashed ship, estimating the distance and probably water depth.
"Sigh! OK then, let me strip once again,i'll definitively prefer to swim all the way;Mugambi please take these along with you, so they won't get wet too much." says the varisian girl while handling the mwuangi her backpack containing magical reagent and spellbook, and the towel
Luckily my armor doesn't take much to put on and off, i just donned it
Iolana put the armor back in the pile and takes a pair of rags. After undressing she ties the rags over her private parts, then almost naked she looks the human males with a severe glance "Save me whatever comments you may have"
She takes her sword and tie it on her back, and is ready to go.
edit:i too would like to know if we are still sick,in which case everything better be delayed when we are fine
Mugambi |
Mugambi store Iolanda's belongings in his backpack while keeping an eye on Gelik. Since the gnome seems fine he says:
I feel better, we should eat something before we go. Gelik looks alright, should be safe.
Opens a ration package and starts to biting it.
Gatherine 'Taboofox' Deepheavy |
Gatherine gave the nearly nude woman a curious goggle.Poor Iolana!I can see her ribs! I'll have to start cooking something hearty for her once we find food. She looks famished!
She selected a waterskin and her own package of rations, grimacing with distaste at the dried meat and hardtack inside.Resigned, she started to gnaw on it to sate her sudden hunger.
So who else is going with Miss Iolana? I'll take the land path with Mugambi because I'm better at hiking than swimming.I'd only slow Iolana down trying to keep up--but I can shoot anything I can see from land threatening her in the water.
Gatherine 'Taboofox' Deepheavy |
Gatherine started poking through Alton's pack, noticing the knife and fishing net.She held them up in exciment.
OI,look! Fish for dinnertime! The dwarf maid bubbled happily, waving the net.
She could scoop some fish up,use the knife to gut and scale them, and roast them next to a fire by skewering them on sticks! She saw a tindertwig in the dwindling pile of gear.
Averin Grey |
"There might be a simpler solution to the food problem" Averin finally piped up, gesturing slightly towards the lobscorpions. "If those things tend more towards their aquatic look-alike than their landlocked ones, that is. Anyone have enough experience with them to know?" He'd been too busy dislodging his equipment from the raft and following the conversation to really give the creatures a once over, but took a moment now to kneel down and investigate the beasts.
"One way or another, I think food then a quick swim sounds like a plan" He hadn't taken the time to put on his armor yet, so for now Averin just strapped his sword across his back, grabbed a dagger and some rope before setting the rest of his things in a neat pile.
1d20 ⇒ 8
+4 for nature, +5 for survival. Unless you'd rather roll and just let me know what Averin makes of the beasties.
DM Bloodgargler |
The creatures do appear to be quite similar to lobsters .. the main difference being a broader, longer tail and the more flexible carapace of tail. The stinger and musculature of venom glands appear to within a separate segment, that might snap off without spoiling the meat. It is quite possible they would be safe to eat .. but you can't be certain at first glance.
Iolana Zerengo |
Iolana smiles at Gatherine reaction:"Sorry dear, but it is the only way to face the sea in relative safety. The rest of the crew can assure you i don't have the habit of walking around with all of this skin exposed.
I admit the first times i was ashamed of having to strip everytime there was the need of diving overboard but you get used to it when it is your job."
Then to Averin:"I hoped in something better myself, the rations Gelik tested for us will do just fine"
edit:ready to go when the others are:so it is Iolana,Gatherine,Averin and Mugambi?
Gatherine 'Taboofox' Deepheavy |
Gatherine is taking everything because she has a light load--her armor is on and she has her hemp rope tied around her waist and her heavy pick out and is wearing her buckler. Her adventurer sash is on as well and holds her other ammo and gunsmith kit.
Gatherine hefted her pick and banged it against her buckler.Ready to go!
Iolana Zerengo |
In case there'll be trouble Iolana won't have time to don clothes and armor. If there are no troubles there is no need for armor anyway,so no point in bringing a lot of encumbrance. The others took rope, hook and other tools,so Iolana will only need spellbook and components in case combat begins (i hope not of course)
DM Bloodgargler |
The four of you head out. As you walk along the beach, closer to the ship, you start to notice how the water seems to "swirl" in. Hitting the higher bank of the west coast of the inlet and curling around toward the east .. this is a strange thing, and shows how the shaping of the shallow jagged seafloor and tempestuous waters can be hazardous to boats that come too close to the island.
The waves break in a mist at the natural jetty of rock, just a few droplets each wave make it over the wall of rock during this low-tide. About 60 feet on the south side of the jetty you find the calmest water .. most of the waves force spent to get to this spot .. and not too close to the rocks of the jetty to worry about an errant wave smashing you against it.
DM Bloodgargler |
The ground that leads into the the thick vibrant foliage rises sharply behind you. To your right you see what looks like a hillside of shattered rock - shellac'd with a slick sheen of sea spray and splatters of moss that look like thinning green hair on the tops of the larger rocks.
The thick air is full of the stench of low tide and the complex fertile scents of the jungle behind you.
you will require a successful swim check(DC15) and climb check(DC10)
walking on jetty to ship - successful acrobatics(balance) check (DC10) and climb check(DC15)
DM Bloodgargler |
From this spot, even a cursory glance is enough to confirm that the Jenivere will never sail again. Only the presence of a sharp ridge of rock along the side of the natural jetty has prevented the wreck from sinking entirely into the sea, for only the ship's stern seems to have survived the wreck. This portion is wedged at an angle, and each wave shakes the wreck - and this much at low-tide.. It won't be long before the waves dislodges the wreck and allows the sea to claim this once-fine ship.
DM Bloodgargler |
I guess you could .. although it is dangerous, there are no other "distracting" dangers take 10 link
DM Bloodgargler |
first successful roll gets you to the ship .. second gets you on board. It is a little easier to walk there as opposed to swim, but easier to get into hull breach than board from jetty. .. and no problem, I'd rather have you ask and me answer than try to explain everything you could possibly ask in a wall of text.
edit: I'll do descriptive text once everyone makes their rolls or decides to take 10s (if 10 is enough)
DM Bloodgargler |
The waves rock you a bit as you swim out .. you get accustomed to the "margin of error" to your swimming from the currents. You find a hole hacked into the hull, by propping one foot up onto the rocks and grabbing hold of loose boards on the keel you pull yourself in.
You find yourself in the stable, made for Tol's horse Gorra. First mate Alton lies face-down unmoving .. an axe lies near his outstretched hand. His other arm draped over a satchel with a couple parchment tubes peeking out.
Iolana Zerengo |
Not having time to look for some cloth or towel to cover herself,Iolana approaches Anton cautiously and speaks quietly "Alton, can you hear me?"
She then tries to check on the body untrained heal 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 1 = 20 if Alton is breathing or bleeding.

Gatherine watches Iolana anxiously as she slipped into the calmer waters near the jetty and swam towards the shattered remains of the Jenevire. The human sailor made it without so much as a stutter and paddled up to the stern of the ship, dissapearing from sight within the debris and flotsam.
Using her pick to help leverage her bulk upon the slick sharp rock and slimy moss,Gatherine steadily made her way towards the ship. Her bootheels wedged between gaps to keep her feet from sliding from under her.
