Deenha |
OK, I can see where you guys are going with this.
Deenha smiles at what she sees as a kindly old man. "Are you sure that your donor isn't trying to take advantage of your love of the past? Can you please tell us what you know about him or her?"

"Hm. I'll tell you what. I'm meeting with their agent for lunch in a little while. Why don't you come along and you can see for yourself there's nothing to be concerned about?"
I'll get the lunch seen up tomorrow morning.
Thran |
"I'm not one to turn down a chance to go get some lunch. We'd be delighted to join you and your guest"

Doctor Landis takes you to a fancy restaurant nearby. Right on time, a woman dressed in the clothes of a wealthy noblewoman arrives, introduced by the doctor as Elixia Makorios. She greets you stiffly, seemingly annoyed that the doctor invited others to their lunch.

That's a fancy looking tattoo. I don't know much about much, I wonder if any of my colleagues know anything.
"Pardon me, a'm needin' tae speak wi' mah colleagues fur a moment."
Pulling Deenha and Thran aside, he says, in as hushed a whisper as he can manage, "Did ye see that tattoo o' nails oan her neck? ony idea whit that means?"
GM Dennis |
DC 16 Knowledge (local or nobility):
Zekuli |
Zekuli whispers back, "I saw that she had tattoos, but I don't know what nails would mean." (I don't think?)
He tries to cover over the whispered conversation going on by moving forward to greet the woman warmly, while trying to avoid saying much of consequence or giving away who they are. "It's very nice to meet you, madam. This seems like a very pleasant dining establishment - was it your recommendation to come here?"
If someone is actually going to talk with her, I'll try to aid on the diplomacy check
Diplomacy, aid another?: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Zekuli is so gauche he doesn't even realize that he's making the situation worse.
GM Dennis |
So, Deenha has figured something out. What are you going to do with that information?
Telos Downshot |
'She's a Hellknight! Those tattoos are from the Order of the Nail!' Deenha whispers to her companions.
Telos whispers back to Deenha. "So, now we just need to figure out if the good doctor knows that, and if whether it would perhaps make him uncomfortable with his donor. If so, that would make things easier for us."
Thran |
Leaning forward to pour Telos and Deenha a drink Thran can't help but overhear what is being said and chimes in while whispering
"We could just ask him?"
GM Dennis |
"So, Ms. Elixia. Go to the Museum often?" Philoneus remains ignorant to who they are.
"No." She shoots you a dirty look and a curt response, then turns her attention back to her wine.
Doctor Landis curiously eyes all of the whispering happening at the table.
Philoneus Tippertille |
Not one to possess much tact, Philoneus continued. "Going to be hard for a Hellknight like you to check it out every now and again if it's locked up in a museum you hardly go to, isn't it?"
GM Dennis |
Makorios pauses for a moment of reflection, then turns stone-faced and politely excuses herself from the dinner. As she exits, she curtly adds, “Thank you for the meal Doctor, and best of luck at tomorrow’s auction.”
Doctor Landis looks stunned, watching her walk out of the restaurant. When she's gone, he turns to you, a look of bewilderment still on his face. "A Hellknight? You're sure? But then, if she wasn't I suppose she wouldn't have reacted that way." He sighs, then adds "I suppose I better back out of the deal. There's no telling what they're after, but I'm sure it won't be good for the museum to be indebted to those folks. I suppose I should thank you, though this is a bitter turn. Ah well."
Success! On to part H.
VC Sheila Heidmarch |
Forgot I had this avatar.
"Well done, Pathfinders! Doctor Landis has withdrawn from the bidding. You say you want something more action-oriented for your next mission? Well, I have just the job for you. We’re still a little short on funds and we need to make some quick coin! If you’re daring enough, head over to the Alabaster District and enter a hydra baiting competition at the Serpent’s Run coliseum. The Master of Games, Axetongue Droaeb, has offered a decent sized purse to adventurers willing to get in the ring with one of his ferocious multi-headed beasts. As always, this event draws a tremendous crowd, one whose coin will more than double the purse he pays to contest participants.“
Telos Downshot |
Telos gets a suspicious look on his face.
"A hydra? This I'm going to have to see. Who's coming with me?"
Telos heads directly over to the coliseum to take in the scene and get a look at this "hydra".
GM Dennis |
You make your way back to Axetongue Droaeb's arena, where he greets you. "Ah, short time no see! Brought me another fun creature for my shows? No? Ah, well then perhaps you'd like to make some money in a more...exciting way? You get in the ring, you fight one of my critters, a young hydra I acquired last week, and I'll pay you 1000gp. All you have to do is make the fight last for at least six rounds, you got it? People gotta have time to eat their popcorn and drink their beer, know what I mean? Anyway, if you can make the fight last six rounds, the money's all yours. I'll even pay you a bonus for every extra round it goes! So, whatdya say?"
Roven Bluntaxe |
"Haud th' line. Understaun." Roven settles his helmet on his head with a determined look, raises his shield and bangs his axe against it.
"Let's show tha wee beastie what tha Lodge is made of nae!"
Thran |
"Fighting a hydra?! The songs of our exploits will ego through the ages!"
Seems like slowing it down and running away from it for 6+rounds will be most effective..but makes for a dull fight....let's try to not kill the thing too quickly though, we need at least 6 rounds before we get paid. I wonder if a Hydra is smart enough to be effected by hideous laughter from Deehna while I try to get it in a grease puddle..would be fun to see it rolling around on the floor having trouble getting up while we just mock fight it and make some money. Oh and let's try not to die ourselves ;)
Philoneus Tippertille |
"You're expecting it to go six rounds with us? Poor odds forthe beasty, but we'll see what we can do."
Is this a new day or have we not slept yet? Asking for spell purposes.
GM Dennis |
It's a new day since the fight with the caravan, not since lunch with the Doctor.
You step into the arena, and suddenly you understand how Droaeb can afford to pay so much for that shocker lizard: the stands are packed. You can see food and drink vendors doing a brisk business as they move up and down the aisle, and the lines at concession stands are long enough that people in the back are giving up and going back to their seats so they don't miss any of the action. The crowd cheers when you're introduced, and then starts chanting "HYDRA! HYDRA!". Droaeb waits for your thumbs-up, then signals to have to large wooden gate at the other end opened. When the latch is thrown, the gate bursts open, clattering against the walls as a large, five-headed beast bursts forth out into the sunlight, bellowing in rage!
A note on the creature: you see 5 heads on long necks. To sever one requires a sunder check, as if they were weapons.

--------------
Present time, in the ring.
knowledge (arcana): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
Hmm... I think we aren't being paid enough.
Telos mutters an incantation as thin layers of wiry, eldritch mesh start to converge and settle on a spherical shape surrounding his body. When it ends the protective structure becomes somewhat more faint.
Cast mage armor. AC +4 armor bonus, 1 hour
Telos speaks to his companions at an audible volume that does not project out to the crowd.
"If you cut off a head, two more will grow back in its place unless we apply fire or acid to the stump. Let me know before you do and I can follow up with an alchemist's fire. Perhaps if we can reduce it to one head early, we can toy with it to make the battle last."
Deenha: no threatening actions yet here. In fact if anybody else wants a mage armor let Telos know.
GM: What would the AC be to hit a stump in that situation? Some sort of called shot, I assume?
Thran |
Bardic knowledge: 1d20 ⇒ 9
Thran nods at Telos words
Seeing what Deehna is trying to do Thran makes no threathing moves what so ever and watches the Hydra's response with interest, getting ready to jump in if it turns out the creature likes a more guttural sound to be fascinated with as he moves closer to run behind the cover of a nearby pillar if everything turns out to no go according to plan. But staying clearly visible to the hydra so it can be swayed by Thran's graceful body movements.
Move to move, I still have line of sight and then standard: Readying to try to fascinate if it looks like Deehna's fascinate doesn't seem to work; for trigger purpose if I can't see it failing it's will save then as soon as it moves - not at the end of it's move - after the first step it takes. Also a DC 15 will save or be fascinated
Roven Bluntaxe |
Roven raises his shield and hunkers down.
Total Defense

"And what's the bonus for each additional round? 250gp a round! No less! Your patrons will get a fight for the ages."
"It's a deal!"
GM: What would the AC be to hit a stump in that situation? Some sort of called shot, I assume?
Tell me what you're doing, and if it includes an attack you resolve that against the creature's touch AC.

Will save vs. Deenha's fascinate: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15
Will save vs. Thran's fascinate: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15
--------------
The Hydra, seemingly unaffected by Deenha's fascinating performance, begins to advance. Thran then begins a similar performance with a similar lack of effect.
The hydra moves forward, growling and bellowing with its five heads. Double move, because you all stayed just out of charge range.

Initiative, end of round 1/beginning of round 2:
Whole party may act.
Philoneus Tippertille |
"I guess this is the part where we try to make it last." Philoneus sneered and moved forward towards the hulking beast. He could not charge with Roven in the way, but that was fine. He did not need to. "Mr. Tiggles! Flank and Attack!" Philoneus readied his short spear to attack when Mr. Tiggles is in position.
Handle Animal to Flank: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26
Handle Animal to Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21
Readied attack action + flank: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18
Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 2
Move forward, probably provoking, and readied action + strike since I know Mr. Tiggles is going to make it.
Mr Tiggles |
Mr. Tiggles warbled and tilted his head as he received the command. Of course, that thing was big, but they could take out larger. He trusted Philoneus. He started moving around the hydra, getting into a flanking position with his master and attacking with one of his talons.
To hit + flank: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 5
Telos Downshot |
Telos steps up just past Deenha, extends his hand and fires a cracking ray of electricity at the young hydra.
Elemental ray, into melee: 1d20 + 5 - 4 ⇒ (20) + 5 - 4 = 21
Electricity damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
Confirm critical: 1d20 + 5 - 4 ⇒ (2) + 5 - 4 = 3
Critical extra damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
Roven Bluntaxe |
Roven moves up to the spot opposite Mr Tiggles. He keeps his shield up high, prioritizing his protection against such a fearsome foe.
Fighting Defensively
He swings his axe in at the beast's chest.
"Na mair waiting - noo ah kin skelp ye! "
Attack - Fighting Defensively + Flanking: 1d20 + 5 - 4 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 5 - 4 + 2 = 23
Confirming: 1d20 + 5 - 4 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 5 - 4 + 2 = 22
Damage: 3d10 + 9 ⇒ (7, 9, 2) + 9 = 27
Uh-Oh
GM Dennis |
Deenha's joke seems to have no effect on the beast.
AoO vs. Philoneus (bite): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25
damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
The hydra bites Philoneus as he advances, but in doing so opens himself up to attack. Philoneus and Mr. Tiggles connect, as Telos jolts it with electricity. Roven moves in, swinging his ax as he hunkers behind his shield. Distracted by the electricity, the creature does not defend against the strike, which lands true and knocks the creature unconscious!
A gasp is followed by a disappointed murmur from the crowd, but Droaeb merely smirks.
Zekuli and Thran may act.
Thran |
Looking around at the crowd and at the damage his party members are delivering to the hydra Thran decides to resist his urges to join in on the battle and hack the creature to pieces..after all, we're supposed to last a few rounds with the thing and instead starts up a narrative to get the crowd riled up
"Look at the carnage people! See the blood spray from the hydra as the challengers hack into! It even needs to take a nap to regain it's strength before we go for round 2! Which I promise you will be even spectaculair and bloody!"
Perform (Oratory) just in case: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22
I guess we can try to stabilize it and just sit on it for a minute or 2 and rake in some cash?
Zekuli |
Seeing the hydra go down, Zekuli rushes to its side. He lifts one hand as if preparing to cast a spell that will finish the beast off - and then at the last minute he places its hand in the hydra's side to heal some of its wounds, or at least keep it from dying at his feet.
Using a prepared doom spell to cast Cure Light Wounds
He smirks at the audience. "Time for this child of serpents to wake up, don't you think?"
CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
GM Dennis |
Zekuli heals the creature a bit, causing it to open its many eyes and snarl. The ungrateful beast rises to its feet, and rears back to attack (I think Mr. Tiggles at least would take an AoO, since his last command was attack. Roven, Zekuli, Philoneus, would any of the rest of you take one? I want to resolve any AoOs before finishing the creature's turn.)
Deenha |
Deenha walks up behind Philoneus and gently taps the back of his shoulder with her healing wand.
CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
edit: sorry if I misread your post. Please save this post for when it is Deenha's turn.
GM Dennis |
Sorry, Deenha, totally my fault. I was hoping I had edited that before anyone posted. I realized I need to resolve AoOs before finishing the creature's turn. I'll hold it for your turn.
Mr Tiggles |
Mr. Tiggles, who knew not the plan, looks curiously at the beast. Did it not fall? Was it not defeated? This many headed monster had more than Mr. Tiggles thought. But not enough.
Flanking attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 4
Roven Bluntaxe |
Roven holds, regretting the force of his blow.
GM Dennis |
Since Mr. Tiggles posted and Philoneus did not, I'm going to assume that means Philoneus is not taking an AoO. EDIT: I'm a cross-posting machine today!
The creature starts to rise, but Mr. Tiggles' instinctive attack reopens some of the wounds healed by Zekuli, but the creature seems to be healing on its own as well, and it lashes out at Mr. Tiggles as it regains its footing. To be clear, Mr. Tiggle's AoO landed, but was not enough to knock it out again thanks to Zekuli's healing and its own fast healing.
bite vs. Mr. Tiggles: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22
damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
Deenha, meanwhile, steps forward and heals Philoneus.
-----
Initiative, end of round 2/beginning of round 3:
Whole party (except Deenha) may act.
Philoneus Tippertille |
Philoneus drops his short spear and pulls out his wand of cure light wounds. Hiding close to his Dwarven comrade so that the people would think he pulled a dagger, he stabbed at the hydra.
Flanking touch: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13
Healing: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
"I knew this beastie want going to last."
Mr Tiggles |
Mr. Tiggles continued going after the hydra even as the damage he caused started disappearing.
Talon flank: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 5
Talon flank: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 3
Bite flank: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22
Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 3
Mr. Tiggles went Dinosaur Crazy.
Thran |
If the hydra didn't drop again after Mr Tiggels attack, I'm pretty sure someone else will put him down again...so
Thran continues to adress the audience
"Did I promise you even more blood?!"
"And did we deliver?!"
Thran tilts his head slightly to the side and lift his hand next to his ear as if listening to a response from far away
"...I can't hear you!!!!"
Perform (Oratory) ..just cause: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (13) + 8 = 21
We might be a bit to good at fighting captive hydra's ;)
GM Dennis |
Mr. Tiggles once again drops the creature to the ground, despite Philoneus' healing efforts, while Thran switches to the roll of hype man.
Telos, Roven, and Zekuli may act.
Roven Bluntaxe |
Roven will prioritize his shield again, and not attack Total Defense. With the cover of Thran's oratory, he'll grunt at Philoneus "Ca' aff yer beastie - ye ken we cannae end this yit!"
Zekuli |
Zekuli rolls his eyes when the creature falls unconscious yet again. Is this really entertaining all these people? he can't help but wonder. Now that he's up close, he takes a good look at the hydra.
Knowledge arcana: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19
What's the fast healing ability?
In order to bring the beast back up to fight some more, and incidentally help out the ones that it has started swinging at, he channels a burst of the magical energy that Nethys allows him to wield.
Channel energy: 1d6 ⇒ 6 Heals everyone within 30 ft
He also draws his morningstar, so he can continue to put on a show of bringing the beast down.
