Alright, guys, this is what I've got so far for your menus. Please take a couple days to clarify, expand, fix, and finish before I ask you to make the checks. Anyone on a team can speak authoritatively for the team now that you've had a chance to discuss. Thanks!

Comfort Food by Chefs Tessara, Vincent, Bahram, and Mimi
1 - Spinach and Mushroom Puff
2 - Creamy Macaroni and Cheese (w/Roasted Peppers?) in Sourdough Bread Bowl
3 - Stew OR Pot Roast with Vegetables (...please clarify which...)

Comfort Food by Chefs Kehlysch, Phillip, Ashley, and Dinte
1 - Stewed Hare with Root Vegetables and Herbed Dumplings
2 - Deep-Fried Catfish with Corn-on-the-Cob and Spiced Butter
3 - Apple Cream Custard Pie OR Stuffed Pear (Which?)
All served with Sweet Tea to drink?

Exotic Delights by Chefs Tessara, Vincent, Bahram, and Mimi
1 -jack-in-the-pulpit root or even perhaps actual marsh mallow, the plant derivative with Vudran naan bread?
2 - dragons milk(?) Gorgonzola Pizza Trieste with apples.
3 - ???

Exotic Delights by Chefs Kehlysch, Phillip, Ashley, and Dinte
1 - Steak Tar-Tar
2 - Steamed Moray Eel with Caviar (?)
3 - ???
All served with Sake to drink?

I would very much like the prepare the stewed hare and dumplings and and willing to defer to others regarding the exotic dish. As for dessert, the custard pie sounds more like a comfort food than the pear.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Looking at the lists in that format, I'm thinking that Stuffed Pear is probably more exotic than the different Apple Pie, unless someone insists otherwise, using one for one meal, and the other for the second.

Ashley holds his fan, thoughtfully.

"Indeed. One supposes that a more 'homey' style will once again fall toward that which seems more readily available locally, while exotic would be further afield from the neighboring area... at least what is common here. For the latter, I have always found that saki is an excellent source of entertainment, both in style and taste for those seeking unusual tastes."

He seems a bit lost in thought, "However, such a thing is not easy nor swift to make properly... thus it would be best if something homey were simple for me, to better free my time up for the latter, though of course, I must make the simple as exquisite as the complex."

He smiles, looking back at Gastone. "Fortunately for me, I find that both segue quite well together in one of my specialties: tea. Locally procured dark teas can easily be crafted both sweetened and lacking such. This is the height of local comfort drinks, as it were. It is especially nice as they can be easily altered to taste with two sets of brews, and on-hand juices to change the flavor."

His head turns to the side, looking back with a smile. "That, then, is what I will do. These should both go well with the dishes I've heard proposed so far."

Dinte Dolce, "Sweet Tooth" wrote:

For Team TessBahDelMimi: Mimi would still urge for the pot roast, but no one has yet to reply to her suggestion. I'd suggest no peppers for the mac'n'cheese, that makes it more gourmet and less comforty---but I'm biased, I hate peppers in mac'n'cheese. Mimi actually ICly wouldn't care; she'd try to make it work either way.

For the exotic, I'd say her proposal would be for a first course salad made of wild greens, including boiled and roasted jack-in-the-pulpit; and for the third, a dish called "pâte de guimauve" which is essence of marsh mallow (but not marshmallow) mixed with meringue and rosewater, perhaps with a flaky crust provided by Tessara? I am cool with the pizza as the second course.

Sorry for doing this ooc but seems faster.

M Human Ranger 1

No peppers in Mac and Cheese sounds better as well. A light panko crust will be perfect

You make your ingredient requests, and all are accepted.

Now, each person, please make a Craft check, followed by a Profession check, and then a Charisma (or Diplomacy) check.
These are for the Comfort Food feasts. (I'll have you roll the Exotic Delights checks later.)
The craft is for your specific food construction. The profession is for how you generally handle yourself in the Kitchen. The charisma is for conducting yourself personably with your fellow chefs and in the brief public appearances.
The chef who makes the highest Charisma (or Diplomacy) check for each team will also be called upon to be the person offering the guests the meal samples in the grand entry hall before the meal each night this week in order to sway them toward choosing that team's menu.
Also, feel free to describe a bit of how things likely go for your character this week, based on the three checks you make.

Mimi, getting used to her new environs, does better than the week prior, treating her vegetables with more delicate art and managing to balance their flavors. While still likely not the blow-away portion of the meals, she contributes with her art more than adequately to both the puffs and with tasty bite size chunks of potato, carrot, rutabaga, and onion to the pot roast. She stays out of everyone else's way, keeps herself and her station immaculately presented at all times, and is helpful to others when called upon. And she even manages to do this without outright offending anyone. It is possible, even, that she might have smiled at someone once, but that was probably a trick of the light.

Kehlysch gets to work cleaning and filleting the catfish, and halfway through the process realizes he forgot to de-bone them. He immediately returns to the first fillet and works his way forward, making sure that Lord Schmultzfeather's guests do not end up with punctured esophagae.

He moves on to the breading as seasoning process. Using some of the herbs he learned how to find from Chef Mimi, he creates a most satisfactory seasoning - one that he feels certain will convey a season of homeiness and comfort.

"Thank you, Chef Mimi," he says to the dour woman with a voice of warm sincerity. "Your instruction these past few days has been essential to my recipe."

He places the breaded strips of fish into the large skillet filled with liquified, boiling grease, and allows them to cook to a light, golden brown color.

Female Human Chef (Supervisor)

Thursday afternoon arrives. Your carefully crafted comfort food meals are laid out before Chef Sali in the Kitchen, and consist of the following:

Comfort Food by Chefs Tessara, Vincent, Bahram, and Mimi
1 - Spinach and Mushroom Puff
2 - Creamy Macaroni and Cheese in Sourdough Bread Bowl
3 - Beef Pot Roast with Earthy Vegetables

Comfort Food by Chefs Kehlysch, Phillip, Ashley, and Dinte
1 - Stewed Hare with Root Vegetables and Herbed Dumplings
2 - Deep-Fried Catfish with Corn-on-the-Cob and Spiced Butter
3 - Apple Cream Custard Pie
All served with either Sweet Tea or Unsweet Tea (guest's choice) to drink.

Several of your fellow chefs seem to be holding their breaths in anticipation as a stoic-looking Chef Sali tastes each dish. Her eyes widen a bit, then close, as she takes more bites of the Mac-in-Bowl than of any other dish, but there is still no comment. Finally, she sips some water and wipes her mouth precisely with a napkin, then stands.

"Well done. These meals should please our guests."

She looks over at Bahram and Tessara.

"Chef Bahram, Chef Tessara, a dish of bread and cheesy pasta would not normally be what I consider 'my kind of food' ... but you have crafted a surprisingly addictive dish. I'm impressed."

She turns to Kehlysch.

"Chef Kehlysch, I have an idea for a way to improve the tenderness of your catfish dish, if you will allow me to assist you as you prepare."

She glances around the Kitchen.

"Alright, it's time for final preparations, including the small tasting samples of each course to inform the guests' menu choices. Chef Tessara and Chef Dinte, if you are each willing, I would suggest that you two be the ones handing out the samples of your respective team's meals before dinner in the grand entry hall, and talking up your team's menu selections. Chef Ashley, you can do your usual tea ceremonies thing, if you'd like. Let's go!"

Everyone snaps into action and the evening begins...

The fancy guests sparkle and shine, hardly a 'comfort food' sort of crowd. The excitement is palpable. There are both repeat guests from last week and new faces, as the guest list is no longer limited to couples. Lovely ladies and noble gentlemen eagerly sample your food and proclaim it delightful. By the time orders start coming in, there is a fairly even split of guests ordering each team's meal. Everyone works to keep the food coming out at the right temperature and at the right time. All flows fairly well.

Toward the end of the first evening, you make your appearance to be thanked by Lord Schmultzfeather in front of the guests in the restaurant. No one faints this time!

After public introductions and much applause, you return to the Kitchen, where Lord Schmultzfeather soon meets you in what seems to be becoming a Thursday-night tradition. He nods at Chef Sali, then addresses your group.

"Most lovely. Well done all around. I felt right at home, in the best possible way.
As for the best meal, I am awarding the bonus prize this week to Chefs Tessara, Vincent, Bahram, and Mimi. Delicious meal. Especially that cheesy bread bowl. Most tasty, I must say!
"

He nods in appreciation at the winning team, then sweeps his gaze around the entire group.

"I hope you will continue to keep up the good work! I look forward to your exotic delights next week. Impress me!"

And, with a grin, he leaves the Kitchen.

You keep up the good work for the following three nights as well, and on the final night you receive either 100gp or 110gp, depending on whether or not you were on the winning team.

Please post character actions and reactions throughout the comfort food weekend, as well as any actions or particular conversation on your next two days off.
Don't roll your exotic delights checks just yet.

Going back to the kitchen, she cleans up her own station and, having been on her feet all day, decides to make herself some "comfort food" of her own, some simple rice porridge of the type served at the monastery. Of course since the monastery was a culinary one and therefore did not extend their asceticism to food, this one features lovely bits of fruit and honey.
