@ Damo - cool beans, I didn't know if it blows our 'laying low' cover."
| GM Damo |
Doesn't blow any covers, and Cyrus's plan is quite feasible if you are moving. The rooftops are very close together and have branches and vines all around them. They're rickety, though. If you take to the rooftops, you'll need to make acrobatics or climb checks (your choice) to stay apace of the cart.
"Ungala is a bandit and a pirate and that is perhaps motivation enough. House Cartaghen isn't the only ones hit - she hits the Consortium as well. She seems to be a equal opportunity cutthroat. Beyond that I know little of her," says Novaria, sighing disappointedly, "She tends to stop the cart from being able to move forwards and then attacks from all sides except the rear. If I knew more, I think I might have been able to get the jump on her!"
Novaria genuinely has little else to tell. Sounds like a good plan so far. Just let me know when you are ready! ;-) Oh, and Cyrus and Ibid... tell me if you will be to the left or right of the cart. You can be on the same side if you like, obviously. Just let me know.

I don't want to speak for those who haven't gotten in on this awesome flurry of posts, but it seems like we are set.
"Getting down from the rooftops when the ambush happens doesn't worry me, I just want to stay out of sight. Ibid and I, and possibly miro can head up to the rooftops when we get closer to the free trade square. Dancing nimbly across the peaks is something I can be quite good at. I'll be just a few steps behind Ibid, I would prefer him shooting over my shoulder rather than running in to his line of fire."
As long as we are not in combat I would imagine I could take 10 on the acrobatics checks for a paltry 21. If Cyrus realizes early on he can't keep up with the wagon like that, he will drop back down to the streets. Mwk light crossbow will be drawn, moving as stealthily as possible. Same side as ibid, unless he has any objections.

Finarin, Gunari, Ibid and Miro can act in the up-coming surprise round.
The tiny caravan winds through the northern half of the city while sticking to the sturdier streets, which are increasingly crowded as the procession approaches Free Trade Square. The more observant Pathfinders note the crowds beginning to disperse as the cart is forced down one of the better-worn streets leading to the south and into Free Trade Square.
Ibid and Cyrus are scouting the rooftops on the (1=west, 2=east: 1d2 ⇒ 1) west side of the street when a pile of crates and boxes tumbles onto the street forming a blockade. The cart is pulled up to a halt and...
Please confirm that your positions are what you would expect on the map before I add in the bad guys. When you are ready, say "go". Sorry, Amaranti if you're asleep already, but I'll probably kick off the battle tonight. The placement is based off the rough marching order on the Campaign Info tab.

Miro keeps his silence...he'd really been wanting to know if there were containers or chests they could possibly hide in, but the others had offered valuable insight, so he lets it go. He puts on the House uniform, chuckling at its fit. Good thing he wasn't much of a combatant, anyhow!
He walks with his short sword out, trying to look as menacing as possible, which meant he looked as formidable as a new puppy at a daycare. He keeps his eyes peeled for the likely ambush, determined to not be surprised.

The crowds begin to disperse, just as the bandits appear from behind the barricade and on the roof opposite Ibid and Cyrus. Without a word, they raise their crossbows and make ready to fire. The Pathfinders were prepared, however, and Ibid, Gunari, Finarin and Miro get the jump on the bandits!
They notice that one bandit in particular stands out, she has short cropped hair, piercings through her nose and wears traditional Bonuwat fashions - to go with the sour expression she wears on her face. This woman is clearly Ungala.

Miro begins to sing a song about a group of bandits that got surprised by a daring group of adventurers who had been hired to kick their ass. A song he'd been writing on their slow journey through the streets of Bloodcove. He keeps his eye on the leader as he draws his shield. Once his fellows were benefitting from his song he would concentrate his effort on that one, hoping to break the will of the underlings.
Don shield, Inspire Courage!
Amaranti
|
Amaranti tries on the house Cartaghen uniform, and discovers that one size does not fit all. While his problems are quite the opposite than Miro's, the Garundi flashes a sympathetic smile at the halfling, who is having his own problems with the standardized clothing size. After rolling up the sleeves and loosening all strings, Amaranti manages finally to wear the uniform, and be able to move at the same time. The result looks hilarious, and is still uncomfortably thight, but it'll do.
---
The Garundi walks in the front of the caravan, weapon in hand, playing his role as a caravan guard. Kaisharga follows close by, keeping low.
Could Amaranti have cast mage armour on Kaisharga (and anyone else who wants) before the caravan approached Free Trade Square?

Seeing the would-be-ambush about to occur, Ibid quickly lifts his bow, the weapon cord attached to his wrist fluttering slightly as the arrow point becomes trained on the bandit directly across the street.
The overcrowded streets and cluttered surroundings make leveling an accurate shot difficult for the old man, and Ibid is unsure if he will be able to land such an attack from such a distance.
Releasing the string, he is sure that he has wasted the opportunity to surprise their attackers.

Could Amaranti have cast mage armour on Kaisharga (and anyone else who wants) before the caravan approached Free Trade Square?
Absolutely!!!
Miro's delightful and familiar song fills the air, filled with Mwangi hints that he picked up (perhaps unconsciously) from his time at the Witchlight listening to the waitresses humming.
--> +1 attack and damage for all Pathfinders.
Ibid, I just checked your profile and you seem to be forgetting the +1 from inspire courage - or the +1 bonus from your bow! Not sure which... but with an 11 you hit his flat footed AC. Will assume you do hit and forgot something...
Jimmy takes Ibid's arrow to his shoulder while he was looking elsewhere. The arrow nearly misses, but instead manages to lodge in a particularly painful muscle. The bandit screams in pain as it runs straight through his body and out the other side with a spurt of blood.
@GM Mechanics of getting on the roof?
Finarin regards the roof. There are handholds and knotted trunks throughout these ramshackle houses. He should be able to ascend easily enough, but he'd likely only get half way from where he is and still be clinging to the roof when Ungala attacks.
--> Move action to get to the roof. DC 10 climb check (at the standard 1/4 speed) as a second move action will get you almost to the top. Since you'll be 7.5 ft up a 10-ft roof, next round you can get over as though standing up from prone by simply folding yourself forwards onto the roof. Until that time, though, you will lose your dex bonus. You could use accelerated climbing at a -5 penalty to your roll, moving at half speed, in order to get up and ready for action.Next up: Finarin, Gunari.

Ungala looks quizzically at Gunari. Upon seeing Ibid's arrow all but take out one of her henchement, however, she quickly downs a potion and immediately her outline becomes indistinct and hard to concentrate on.
-->potion of blur
Jim, will save: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (19) + 0 = 19
Jim, meanwhile shrugs off the mental command to attack his superior, and focuses instead on the archer on the other side of the roof, Ibid.
Jim, longbow vs Ibid: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15
His attack lodges in Ibid's armor, however, and does no lasting damage.
James moves up for a better look, and decides to go for the enormous man wielding a lance with a serpent at his side.
James, longbow vs Amaranti (who has cover +4 AC): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22
Alas, due to the press of the crowds, his shot falls just short of the mark.
The severely wounded Jimmy notes his friend's lack of success firing into the crowd, the severe wound in his shoulder and decides to shoulder his longbow as he flees the scene!
Jimbo learns from his comrades' failures, and jumps behind the barricade for some hard cover. He pokes his head up above the boxes and fires at Ibid, who he now has a clear shot on.
Jimbo, longbow vs Ibid: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17 <-- Just!
Damage to Ibid: 1d8 ⇒ 8

Curses, they were supposed to attack the rear of the caravan!

It's cool, Cyrus. Please do continue to roll your own miss chances if you remember! Only caveat is that, as you did Cyrus, low is always the chance to miss (ie. it's a miss chance of 25%, so <= 25% is a miss).
Also Cyrus, acrobatics can get you down as a move action... where's the other movement coming from?
Cyrus fires at Ungala, hitting her indistinct form in what he thinks is a glancing blow to her ribs.
Meanwhile, Miro climbs up over the cart to get close enough to Ungala (moved you already).
Ungala will save: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6

Kaisharga can get over the barricade with that much movement. The barricade is lower than 5ft. It doesn't mater so much because...

Also Cyrus, acrobatics can get you down as a move action... where's the other movement coming from?
I jumped from the roof as part of my movement and negated the damage with the acrobatics roll. I tried to find something in the acrobatics or falling rules to confirm the legality of that (that it can be part of a move instead of its own move action), but couldn't find anything either way. Visually, Cyrus leaps from the building 10 feet down to the ground and hits the ground in stride, finishing his movement 30' from where he started... Kind of like making a jump check for a horizontal jump, you just can't jump further than your full movement.. Happy to go with whatever you decide to rule. As much as I don't want to delay, where I am on the map will affect what I do next, so I will wait, and then post my action as soon as I can!

James falls backwards at Gunari's assault, and is immediately pinned to the ground by Ibid's arrows. The man lays there, completely motionless as his blood pools on the murky streets of Bloodcove. There is a momentary calm before Ungala shouts out, from her position on the ground, "I give up!"
She leaves her bow on the ground and slowly stands up (provoking AoO, if you're feeling bloodthirsty, Finarin), her body still blurry and hard to see.
"I know when I am outmatched, you win!" Ungala, through the haze, looks utterly furious, "House Cartaghen has beaten me at last. It was bound to be them, or the Aspis Consortium... but they really brought out the heavy hitters on me for this one, didn't they? New arrivals in Bloodcove, from the looks of you. Name your price and rape the Mwangi of their treasures!" Eventually, her body becomes easier to see - though some may prefer the blurred version - and Kaisharga and Finarin (who appears suddenly, startling the already shaken Bonuwat woman) escort her to the other Pathfinders. She puts up no resistance.

"Just mercenaries, eh? Well, I guess that makes sense. You must be really new in town if you need to know of the Aspis Consortium. Surprised someone at House Cartahegn didn't tell you," she says quietly, eyeing the now abandoned streets to be sure she cannot be overheard, "They are thieves and robbers, operating under the guise of a legitimate business. Oh, I know they say similar things about me, but I am liberating the treasures they steal from the Mwangi people. I return it to the temples and sites from which they were stolen. Where that isn't possible, I ensure the artifacts are distributed to the rightful inheritors... not some foreign dandy who wants a fireplace cozy," Ungala sneers throughout this explanation, "House Cartahegn, Aspis Consortium, makes no difference to me. They're in the same business: making a profit off the backs of my people.
"Before you arrest me, at least look inside those crates you are carrying. Tell me if you think this endeavor is worth protecting. If you do, then you're just as bad as they are and at least I know what fate awaits me should you take me to your superiors."
FYI: each bandit is carrying a potion of curelight wounds, 2 thunderstones, 5 mastework arrows, and 2 tanglefoot bags - in addition to their mundane equipment.

Finarin and Miro suspect there is a little more to Ungala's relic liberating operation than she is letting on. Otherwise, though, everyone is certain that she is telling the truth.

"What say we beat feet and take this conversation to another location, in a hurry," Ibid says, looking back and forth down the long-winding streets. "Before the snakes show themselves."
"Somewhere she can be... properly... put to the question."

Had a post, got distracted, got Cyrus'd by EVERYBODY. Made me laugh :) You guys already are thinking what I was about to post, so I just removed it...
Cyrus whispers to Ibid and the others, "She is the best chance we have of building a network of citizens that work directly against the Aspis Consortium. If the society wants to gain a foothold in this city, Ungala is the place to start. That is my opinion. If Noveria is working with the society now, these once enemies might have cause to work together in the future..."
Cyrus helps himself to a potion, a couple of thunderstones and a couple of the tanglefoot bags as well.
These might come in handy later...

Unfortunately you have nowhere at all you could take this conversation offline and still keep a two-horse cart. Ungala knows somewhere, but you'd have to trust her...
"I have a stable where we were going to keep that cart," says Ungala, speaking up, "If you'd like, we could use it. The stable is abandoned and not far from here... and well hidden."
Ungala takes a look around and notes James lying dead on the ground. Her eyes moisten at the sight, but her demeanor remains stoic.
"Please, if you could heal my companion on the roof," says Ungala gently, indicating the rooftop where Jim was, "He is stable, but will likely be killed if found by the guard. He carries his own potion, which you can use if you do not wish to waste your own magics."

unless someone objects, of course... There's four potions, right?

Cyrus moves over to the bleeding man, and pulls the potion he recently procured out of his pocket and pours it down the dying man's throat. He then proceeds to tie him up and move him in with the woman.
"Let's finish delivering this cart, and finish the job we were tasked with. Then we can finish this conversation in a more private place, since you have one."
