I'll be posting more detailed information on the campaign world over the next few days. Feel free to use any of it to modify your backgrounds or to work together to come up with shared histories. I'll try to work in any ideas you guys have. If something is too far out I'll let you know, but I don't have any ideas for this campaign I'm not willing to throw out if you have better ones.

As long as you keep the same basic concepts, you can feel free to modify your stats to better coordinate your roles in the party until we begin the campaign, which I expect to be some time next week.

Hey everyone, I just wanted to introduce myself officially. My name is Perry, you can refer to me here by my name or you can use Nomadpk, I don't care which. Like I said in my first post I've been gaming for a long time but this will be my first PF game as well as my first PBP, so please bear with me as I learn the ropes. I live in South Korea so my time zone is a bit different from all you statesiders. We're 14 hours ahead of the Central Time Zone here, but the good news is that all my classes are at night, so when I'm getting out of school at 9pm it's 7am for you.

A little about my Character, T'zay Sshi'ah. This is a character that I came up about 8 years ago and played briefly in a RL campaign (in which our DM was also a player) to about level 4 or 5. I never got to the point where his concept fully developed and I've been wanting to play him again ever since. I'll be posting him shortly (once I figure out how) so that you can all get an idea of what he's about.

I'm looking forward to playing with you all, and if anyone has any questions about me or my character, feel free to ask.

-perry

Dotting.

Also, I'll be fleshing out my BG this weekend, and as more world info comes in. Super psyched for this!

Male Human Fighter (Tactician)

I guess Rhane and Sevram will be the frontline fighters with some help from T'zay and Gliressa if needed. Since being a Cavalier and a Tactician we're going to have several Teamwork Feats we should try to coordinate some of them. I took Outflank since it would help the rogue when I used my Tactician class feature, and having a weapon with a Critical Threat of 17-20 I expect to get some critical provoking extra Attacks of Oportunity.

Sevram will begin most fights using Combat Expertise until he assesses his enemies. Then he may use Disarm or Sunder, use Power Attack, or whatever seems more convenient.

Also I wonder how you intend to let your characters evolve. Sevram will probably go Fighter all the way. Maybe make a small dip in Paladin if he finds the faith he has never had?

Any suggestions?

@Sevram Septimus

You will have the chance to evolve your characters a great deal. I'm a big fan of multiclassing, and if you're interested in Paladin levels I'd be happy to work that into the story.

The further the campaign goes on the fewer restrictions there will be on your options for advancement. I have a story planned out and we may reach the end of it, but I'm willing to continue the campaign as long as people are interested in playing it.

Well, right now I don't intend to multiclass, but as i see him, Sevram is not a Paladin because he lacks faith in a superior being, so if he found that faith he may take a few levels. Anyway I prefer the story to shape the stats and not the other way around.

Oh, and I'm eager to see the story you have ready for us!

Going Paladin might be interesting. It was a meddling paladin who "ruined" Irina's life (as she sees it, since the paladin outed her to the townsfolk). She bears a hatred of paladins, and a desire for vengeance against all holy warriors. She doesn't seek their deaths, however, just to make them fall. She would use all her powers of deceit and manipulation, as many mind games as she can bring to bear, to cause any paladin she can to fall, even if it takes years. I'm going to write up one such success into her backstory when I ever get a moment to put fingers to keyboard.

@Sevram: I am definitely willing to coordinate on our teamwork feats so that we don't overlap too much. For my combat style, I will most likely be mounted whenever possible. When not possible, I will be wading into combat with Longsword and Shield.

I'll be working some more on Rhane's background as well as selecting my feats and all as much as I can this weekend. Sadly, I am a retail supervisor, so I'll be working every day until Monday.

My friends call me Potter, so you can either call me that or my message board handle (Thal`aen), or you can call me Rhane. Pretty much, I will answer to anything that I can identify as being directed towards me. ;)

For Rhane's style in combat, he fights with honor and fierce determination. That's not to say that he doesn't like to stack the odds in his favor (tactically speaking), or that he doesn't know when to run (er, "tactically withdraw"). It just means that he will offer quarter to a defeated opponent rather than dealing the killing blow outright, and that if he withdraws that it's only temporarily until his cunning intellect can devise a fool-proof assault.

Out of combat, Rhane still holds honor dear to his heart. Although he can bluff his way in if the situation calls for it, he will chafe under the subterfuge and long for something more direct and earnest. He prefers to settle his disputes with reason and intellect, and is very slow to provoke to violence for his own sake. However, if someone threatens the things that he holds more dear than even himself, may The Gods (if you believe in that sort of thing) have mercy upon them.

Thal`aen wrote:

I actually meant that we should take some in common so we could use them without spending daily uses of Tactician but keeping some of them from overlapping will be necessary too.

Then maybe she would be so kind to utterly destroy Sevram's faith before he becomes a Paladin *wink*

So due to my lack of experience with all this, I ended up botching my aliases and avatars and profiles. So, I had to change the spelling of my character name. I just added another "a". T'zay Sshi'aah.

DM, could we have a game thread, just to dot, so that this game will show up on the campaigns tab?

Thanks!

Irina Moretskya wrote:

Done.

I foolishly deleted my placeholder post and now the gameplay thread is gone. I've asked the Paizo webgnomes if they can help out.

Female Human Wizard 7

Good morning all,

In real life I'm an HR Generalist.

My profile has my character ready with the exception of some equipment. I do have one feat slot that I am willing to trade out for teamwork, not sure how it would work as a caster though.

Feel free to take a look and if you see anything that looks a bit off, or could be improved, by all means say something!

@DM aLittleTooQuiet, can you check my items and see if I went overboard?

Looking forward to a great game with everyone!

Mayve's style is going to be a bit utilitarian. I've not really considered her to fit a single role, though as the group meshes I can see her selecting spells to fill the needs of the group. Right now she is set up to primarily provide crowd control.

Irina's role is support, buffing, and debugging. She has a plethora of potions and infusions all fluffed as herbal remedies and the like. She knows they are magical, but is so used to covering up that little secret that she sometimes forgets. She also knows she has a few tricks up her sleeves, minor curses she can use when the situation calls for them. She is also skilled in healing.

Male Human Fighter (Tactician)
Mayve Tearwrought wrote:

Most Teamwork Feats are Combat Feats and not much use for a full caster, maybe Shielded Caster, but since you'd need at least other character to have it it'd be better if you took it next level. If you want to take it it'd be good if Sevram took it and stayed next to Mayve if she got caught in a battle, maybe they feel dutybound to protect her? It'd give a not bad +6 to concentration checks. Rhane could take it too but he is more of a mobile fighter being a cavalier.

Female Human Wizard 7

If the DM is up for allowing it, I have no problem "crafting" some wondrous items for other players prior to game kickoff.

I was thinking of changing a feat (possibly combat casting) for craft wand or craft weapons/armor...

Female Half-Elf Chameleon3/TWF3/Enchanter1

Gliressa is someone who has watched the empire crumble, and is interested in helping people stave off the oncoming barbarism she feels will inevitably fill the anarchic void left behind. She tries to learn and read as much as possible, and shares her knowledge with anyone who will listen. She believes in the value of law and society, but is not certain the world needs another empire. As a half-elf, she is extra-sensitive to bullying types, racists, and anyone with any form of prejudice. She tries very hard to keep an open mind and as such is frustrated when stereotypes turn out to be true, or when she is forced to go along with some kind of first-choice or close-minded scheme. She is from the city, and as such is always more comfortable there, even in ruins.

She will always jump in to help innocents in trouble. Always.

Mechanically, I see her primarily as a scout, infiltrator, knowledge monkey, and diplomat. Combat-wise her MO will be to use her ridiculous Stealth checks (she also has full-speed stealth as her rogue trick and instantly gets a 28 on all stealth checks made in cities due to them being her Favored Terrain) to get in position, then use her TWF skills to hammer out as much damage before vanishing into the shadows once again. The usual rogue-y business, I reckon. :-)

I'll be looking to make her short swords keen ASAP. She's got a lot of bases covered with both of them being +1 and one being cold iron and one being adamantium, but Keen would help a lot. Her spells will be used entirely to boost her infiltration and diplomacy first, and defend herself (via Shield) second, but never to attack. Her familiar is mostly for fluff but of course has legitimate mechanical value, at the very least in that he contributes to her really great Bluff score.

Um, that's it for now. Really digging everyone's concepts!

I have revamped Irina's backstory. I couldn't think of a really cool way she could have brought down a paladin, so I didn't include that, and said only that she's keen to bring one down someday. I also threw in a young daughter the nasty paladin forced her to abandon. I figure the girl would be about ten by now. Irina hasn't seen her daughter since she left her village eight years ago.

Looking through some of the other concepts, I can see her cultivating a relationship with either Mayve or T'zay (probably not both, at least, not at the same time), if that interests either player. Mayve's obsession with the old laws would occasion quite a bit of eye-rolling from Irina, however. :)

Sevram would be too straight-laced to interest Irina on her own, and Thal'aen would be too close to a paladin. In fact, since Irina doesn't really have meta-knowledge about what makes a paladin a paladin, she may very well try manipulating the cavalier into "falling" from grace. If nothing else, he'd make good practice for her.

Mayve Tearwrought wrote:

You can craft items for any other players you know in your backstory prior to the start of the game.

You can use crafting prices, but don't craft anything that would cost over 10,000gp to buy.

Male Human Cavalier 7

@Sevram:
Just wanted to update you that I've actually switched to a Greatsword instead of Longsword and Shield. This won't throw off any plans you had, will it?

@Irina:
If that's concept that you have of Rhane and that's the way you want to play it, then so be it. Just remember that there is a difference between "Grace" and "Honor." ;) Rhane is quite openly agnostic, and loves his rowdy evenings of wine, women and song - he just doesn't care for deceit and trickery if there is an alternative course of action.

Really looking forward to playing this game! I almost have the last of my feats picked out, and then all of the mechanical stuff will be done.

I've got a Halloween party tonight, but I'll be on tomorrow morning posting more background on the campaign world.

I'll be finishing up my prep and working on player intros over the weekend, and if everyone is ready we should be able to start the game early next week.

Woohoo!

Looking forward to getting this game kicked off!

Ok, so interest from Irina for having known Mayve already, anyone else?

@Irina How would you like to work that in? From your background I think it would have to be after you left that village, met on the road someplace?

Ah, well if that's how Rhane is, then hecwouldn't be a good candidate. Didn't know about the agnosticism and wenching. I must have missed that background post. I guess she'll have to content herself with corrupting Sevram's soul instead.

What do you think about Coordinated Defense or Coordinated Maneuvers for our Teamwork Feat?

@Irina:

Nah, you didn't miss anything. I've been too busy with work this week/weekend to sit down and write out his full background - I just wanted to clarify so that we didn't have any misconceptions going into it.

I may just write down some rough details as they come to mind, and then fill in the blanks once the DM throws us a line with more info on this world and where we might fit into it.

Sevram has both Improved Disarm and Improved Sunder so Coordinated Maneuvers would be most welcome.

I've updated the campaign info page with some rough info. I'll continue to update it throughout the weekend.

You will begin the story in or around Plaeton.

Sevram, your map covers both Lantia and Elodyn.

Male Ii'ssalak'teul Barbarian 2 / Druid 5

Profile is complete and posted. My background has me traveling north toward Plaeton, if anyone else is going that way there's a chance we might meet on the road before this thing kicks off.

Mayve Tearwrought wrote:

Ok, so interest from Irina for having known Mayve already, anyone else?

@Irina How would you like to work that in? From your background I think it would have to be after you left that village, met on the road someplace?

I could see the two of them having known each other for quite awhile now. Traveling along with Mayve would give her excellent cover, and it would be a relief to have be person with whom she wouldn't have to pretend her potions were just really potent herbs. Plus, it would give her great motivation to help others, and most importantly, a reason for her to be counted among the heroes of the empire (ie, get involved in the campaign in the first place).

How far back could, according to Mayve's backstory, could they have met?

I've updated the world map, highlighting some current political boundaries. These are current kingdoms/city states, which conform somewhat with former imperial provinces.

The green area in the center of Elodyn represents elven lands, and the red area represents the dwarves.

I still need to fill in some notable areas, mostly in the north.

The empire would have encompassed the whole island of Lantia, the northern tip of Burun, and the eastern half of Elodyn.

If you've already looked at the world map, you might have to clear your browser cache. Hold shift and click the refresh button while you're looking at it if you don't see any changes.

So it looks like we've got Mayve and Irina adventuring together. Anyone else want to form any groups or do you just want me to introduce you solo?

Male Human Fighter (Tactician)

I think Sevram could have established some kind of friendship with Glee or Rhane, they may have met investigating some old library or ancient ruins and decided to travel together for safety.

Male Ii'ssalak'teul Barbarian 2 / Druid 5

I'd be willing to take on companions if they happened to be travelling north along the coast toward Plaeton, for mutual safety. Or if they needed help getting along in the wild.

Irina and T'zay would probably look like they have more in common than they actually do. That being said, Irina would have no problem traveling with T'zay - whether Mayve would go for it is another question.

Well among his people females are the equals of males in all respects, so there'd be no misguided notions of chivalry involving protecting two women on the road, but if either of you are lacking in survival skills, he'd see it as his duty to help you get along in the wild. Although he might be interested in hearing about the history of the region if either of you are knowledegeable in that area. For that reason alone he'd probably be willing to take on traveling companions.

Female Human Wizard 7

I left the background vague to make it easier to work in connections.

While Mayve came from a small village, it wouldn't be the same one Irina came from, so the two of them definitely met on the road.

Mayve would have some concerns about Irina's goal of bringing down an awful stupid paladin, so maybe a more recent meeting unless Irina is not vocal about her extreme dislike of pally's.

Hey DM, since we are starting at 7th, how much poetic liberty do we have in our history/background?

Such as: Mayve Tearwrought, Savior of Brewersbridge, Knight of the Rose Order, Wizard Extrordinaire.

Is there a specific place that we should have our characters starting in, riding towards, etc?

Mayve is something of a traveler. She comes to a village, stays for a few days, provides assistance if it should be needed, talks about a return to empirical rule, and leaves before her welcome runs out. She is more likely to seek payment in tomes, scrolls, books, or other information than strictly in gold.

Umm, I'm not familiar with T'zay's race, it's not core, and looks homebrew, and the homebrew looks like a bit more than the 10 pt base for 0 lvl... DM allowing race customization per the beta Advanced Races booklet? I'd certainly love to turn Mayve into superwoman.

@Mayve Tearwrought I'll review T'zay's racial traits. He should be a 10 point race. I know a couple of his racial-seeming abilities come from feats and magic items though. If he's more than a 10 point race I'll have him either bring his RP down to 10 or remove class levels accordingly.

I made an exception to my race rules for him because I knew about the character he wanted to bring back (it was from a campaign we played together several years ago) and I came up with a good idea to work it into the campaign world, but he should still be comparable in power to the core races. The only game rule exception I made for him was to allow him to take Keen Scent even though that feat is for Orcs. I figured burning a feat to be good at a subset of perception checks was not overpowering, but I'd be willing to reconsider that if the rest of the group thinks it's unfair.

I'll address your other questions in a bit, right now I need to get back to work. ;)

Here, for your viewing pleasure, is a breakdown of how I built the Ii'ssalak'teul:

Type: Monstrous Humanoid - 2rp
Size: Medium - 0rp
Speed: Normal - 0rp
Ability Score Modifier: Standard - 0rp (+2 Str, +2 Wis, -2 Cha)
Language: Xenophobic - 0rp
Racial Abilities:
Natural Armor - 2rp
Stability - 1 rp
Movement Abilities:
Climb - 1rp
Swamp Stride - 1rp
Swim - 1rp
Skill and Feat Abilities:
Camouflage - 1rp
Other Abilities:
Hold Breath - 1rp

Total rp = 10

Everything else can be attributed to Class features, magic items, and Traits. If there are any other questions about anything specific, please let me know and I'll be happy to show you how I got it.

That all being said, I understand that balance and fair play is largely a matter of perception, so if it's the consensus of the the group, or the will of the DM, I'd be willing to take a level adjustment or trade in some of my traits for different ones.

That all looks fine to me T'zay. I don't know the rules to say whether the rp costs are fair for any you had to make up (or maybe they're all even in the race rules), but I have no problems with anything. I find that even if there is a bit of a power boost from races like that, the role-playing hinderances and NPC reactions tend to balance things out, especially in a game that will have role-playing components.

As for needing a man to protect her in the wilderness, suggesting such a thing is a good way to be gutted and have your entrails used for divinations. Many of Irina's components for her spells and brews come from swampy areas, so somebody knowledgeable about such locations would be a welcome travel companion.

As for making her intentions towards paladins known, definitely not. Her opinion of paladins is not a secret - of course, the way she tells the story, the specific paladin comes off in a very bad light - and indeed that opinion carries over to all other goody-two-shoes who feel it their right to force their ideologies on other people.

Kind of like insisting everybody bow down to some archaic emperial rule. Should make for some interesting dialogues.

You're going to start in Plaeton, on the Northeastern coast of Elodyn. This was the largest city in the old empire, and is still impressive, even though the authorities really only control the central city. It's a large trading port, and the gateway to the interior of the continent, so even in these dark times it's a very active place.

What remains of the imperial academy of wizardry is in Plaeton, so Mavye would likely be very familiar with the city and have ample reason to return there.

EDIT: Oh, and it's probably important for you know that you won't be there long. There will be urban adventuring down the road, but the city is really just a starting off point.

Female Human Wizard 7

No problems with your T'zay (I would happily use any excuse to squeeze more abilities into my own though).

Alrighty then, on to the fun stuff... Here's a bit more depth of background that T'zay or Irina are more than welcome to plug their character's introductions into:

Background:

Mayve wasn't sure what she would due with a knighthood, but the baron of that small town on the outskirts of Nayim had been more than grateful for her assistance in clearing out the gnolls that had moved into the area and were assaulting the outlying steadings. If she ever returned to the area it might be of some use, otherwise she would just chalk it up to a good deed done well. Of course that was easier than dealing with that necromancer in Brewersbridge a couple of years ago, that had laid her up for weeks recovering. She fondly recalled the handsome cleric that had been nursing her back to health was only a bonus, if only she could remember his name... Of course it was that particular adventure that had caught the eye of an agent of the Order of the Rose, and garnered her admittance to the Imperial Acadamy. Her arcane arts had grown swiftly in the year since.

The ship was finally pulling into dock after the long journey across the ocean to Plaeton. And she couldn't wait to report back her findings from the ancient temple that was buried in the sands beneath the gnoll encampment. She patted the satchel hanging at her side once again, feeling the scroll case inside. The story and map had some interesting leads to an ancient library in the interior. Once she had dropped the rest of the tomes off at the Academy, she would be able to resupply and head off. Hopefully before she got caught up in any more petty politics among the various factions.

"Captain, I thank you and your crew for a safe and swift journey. Once my horse is lifted to deck, I will be on my way." Mayve, checks over her bundles one last time, stacked neatly near the gangway.

Female Half-Elf Chameleon3/TWF3/Enchanter1

@Sevram: Glee is generally pretty genial, so it's perfectly possible that she'd travel with you, especially if you were on your way to a city like, e.g., our designated starting point. I'm cool with your suggestion that they met in a battered old library en route to Plaeton. Maybe Gliressa waited hidden in the stacks until she was sure Sevram was cool, then stepped out. That would be her usual MO for an UrbEx'ing encounter like that.

@Mayve: There are some really cool overlap points between Glee and Mayve. Both believe the crumbling of the empire was a Bad Thing, but Gliressa isn't necessarily sure there needs to be another one, or if there IS gonna be another one, she wants those making it to learn from the mistakes of the past.

Also, both Mayve and Glee will both stop at nothing to protect the innocent, so I can picture some awesome encounters where the two of them charge headlong in. :-p Only thing is, Gliressa would definitely not be okay with expecting people to return to imperial ways (or anything, for that matter) in return for rescue.

This is gonna be really interesting. :-D

Mayve Tearwrought wrote:

I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by the course of the campaign. :)

@Mayve Tearwrought Excellent! T'zay might know a little bit about that ancient temple as well. You could easily have encountered him while in the desert, but I'll leave that up to the two of you.

Male Human Cavalier 7

Alright, finally finished building the character and writing his (immediate) backstory. Profile is fully updated. Sorry for the delay, but it was a hellacious weekend at work. Gotta love retail at this time of year.. >.<

I am okay with having run into Glee and Sevram on the road on my way South to Plaeton, if you two so desire.

Female Human Wizard 7

I added a few points for other characters to get into Mayve's story:

A couple of years ago @ Brewersbridge, fighting a necromancer. Location of Brewersbridge is flexible.

Within the last year on the southern continent, in an arid environment, fighting gnolls, searching an ancient tomb.

In the last couple of weeks on the boat trip to Plaeton.

If anyone wants to write a background similar to mine, they can write me in at some point between those times. If they are not current traveling companions, then they may at least know each other when they meet up in Plaeton.

Male Ii'ssalak'teul Barbarian 2 / Druid 5

@Mayve T'zay's back story also begins in the outskirts of Nayim. It's very likely that had he stumbled across a ruined temple while traveling through the desert he would have taken shelter. We can meet there as you're wrapping up your adventure within if you'd like. After a brief encounter in which we decide not to kill each other, we might find that traveling to Plaeton together isn't a bad idea. Or if we decide to go our seperate ways, we'll find that our ways are not so seperate after all when we meet again on the boat.

@DM Perhaps Mayve is the source of information on that thing I'm looking for?

T'zay Sshi'aah wrote:

I think an even better background would be that you aren't looking for that thing at all, it helps me remove some confusion from the story.

Together you could have figured out your predicament. The wizards would have been very interested in hearing your account of things, and they're probably the best people to help you get home, so it would be easy to see why you two would travel to Plaeton together.

Female Human Wizard 7

Why at the end of the adventure in Nayim (Mayim on map)?

Mayve met him during a trek through the desert, they happened to be traveling in the same direction, and decided that traveling together was safer than not.

Upon arriving at the village of Redsand Spring, the two adventures were asked by the council to eradicate a gnoll problem. With no schedule to keep, they agreed. During the next couple of weeks, the two grew to know each other and to be able to get along. They routed the gnolls, discovered and explored the ancient tomb, and claimed their rewards. T'zay, being NG was drawn to help the village despite their wariness of him (being a lizard after all). Mayve has long found that people are more receptive if they are grateful, and so she was more than happy to have an opportunity to suggest a code of laws to the village after the gnolls were defeated. The tomb proved to be a bonus, and knowing that many of the books and scrolls she found would be valuable to the Acadamy, she asked her new friend to accompany her back to Plaeton.

Now just to work in Irina...
