Small rider with large mount?

Is there a CLEAR rule somewhere that SPECIFICALLY states that mounts MUST BE one-size larger than their rider?

I ask, because I'm looking to make a small character with a large mount.

I thought the rule was only that the mount must be at least one size category larger. I didn't think it needed to be exactly one size category larger.

It can be any number of sizes larger, but you can't "fast mount" or "fast dismount" from a mount more than one size category larger than yourself.

Yeah, the rule is the mount must be at least one size category larger, no exactly one size larger.

Look at the Mammoth Rider PrC. Your mount becomes Huge, and the class is mostly intended for Kellid human characters from the Realm of the Mammoth Lords.

Sovereign Court

Makes sense to me; a halfling might start with a (medium) wolf AC at level 1, but by level 4 that wolf will become large.

Also, medium creatures might want to use an elephant mount (huge).

At some point the rule that you occupy all the squares of your mount does start to strain one's credulity.

Wolf howdah time!
