[Jehova's Arena, Test] Fight the Thirty-First, Aurum vs. Kailin

Play-by-Post

Though the arena at large doesn't seem to have many audience-members today, those that are around appear to have gravitated towards this fight, between two combatants with good records in the pit. Aurum enters from the north, Kailin and Sunahl from the south.

Aurum A10, Kailin L10, Sunahl L11 Initiatives and such, please.

Aurum steps into the arena, golden sword in hand. Wearing loose black leggings tied at waist, knee and ankle with a loose fitting black top. In addition he is wearing a long flowing golden cape that seems to glitter in the light. On his head he wears a pair of smoked goggles that are not over the eyes but appear to be in easy reach. He carries himself with a calm serenity that seems juxtaposed to the brutality and violence of the arena.

Arbiter:
Initiative 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25

Initiative = 25

Male Half-Elf

Kailin steps into the arena, wearing common clothing and a chain shirt over top. At his side is his katana as usual, which he draws with a flourish, light flashing from the blade. The crossbow that has not yet seen use still hangs at his side.

Sunahl enters after him, taking his place at the half-elf's side. The great blue serpent eyes Aurum with a contemplative expression, but readies himself for battle.

Honestly, these Initiative rolls are pretty much pointless, I'm not beating that :P But...

Arbiter:
Kailin's Initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22
Sunahl's Initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5

Kailin 22, Sunahl 5. You're up.

Begin Surprise Round

Aurum begins a series of movements and quickly moves to his right along the far wall.

Arbiter:
Swift action to Snake Style, Move action to move 30' to A04

Move to A04

Youre up. FYI I won't be able to post again for about 16 hours or so due to the fact that I am conducting a conference tomorrow. Looking forward to a good battle!

Male Half-Elf

No prob. Good luck with the conference, and yeah, I'm thinking this might be a fun fight :P
.
:: Surprise Round ::

Kailin makes a few gestures and touches a hand to Sunahl's back, arcane energies crossing around him before fading out. Kailin takes a step to the side, and Sunahl moves in front of him, jaws ready to snap.

As usual, Spellcraft DC 16 for the spell if you're curious:
Shield

Kailin 5-foot steps to L9 and Sunahl moves to K9. And that'll be back to Aurum's turn.

Had time before the conference so throwing up a quick post.

Begin round 1

Aurum stops and pulls a vial from his pouch which he then drinks before disappearing.

Arbiter:
Draw potion as a move action, drink potion of invisibility as a standard action, swift action to add Crane Style to stance, 5' step to A3. Stealth check if needed 1d20 + 43 ⇒ (10) + 43 = 53
Sense motive if needed for AC 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (16) + 11 = 27

You're up!

Male Half-Elf

:: Round 1 ::

Arbiter:
Sunahl will make a perception check to see if he can locate Aurum (doubtful, but you know).
.
Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20
.
He's also going to ready an action to attack once him and Kailin are in position as detailed below.

As Aurum vanishes, Sunahl hisses, then smiles. "Ah, is that how we're doing this?" he calls out. "I had expected a more direct approach from you, from what I've seen of your previous fights."

Kailin meanwhile magics himself up the same as he did for Sunahl, before the two go back to back.

Kailin is still in L9, Sunahl will 5-foot step to L8, and that will be all for their turn. However, Sunahl does attempt a Perception to see if he can locate you. Result is 20 and he can't see invisibility, so unlikely, but you know.
.
You're up.

Begin round 2

Arbiter:
Move action to draw a potion, Standard action to drink potion of mage armor, 5' step to B4.

Perception dc 53 to see what I'm doing.

You're up!

Male Half-Elf

Ha, well that's not happening :P
.
:: Round 2 ::

Kailin keeps his eyes peeled while Sunahl does the same. After a few moments of nothing happening, the half-elf calls out, "We can wait here all day, monk. Whenever you're ready, I suppose."

Arbiter:
Kailin and Sunahl will ready actions to attack whenever they are made aware of Aurum, taking a 5-foot step if needed to get in range or negate Cover from the pillar (more likely for Kailin and Sunahl respectively).

Aurum is up.

Arbiter:
Move action to draw a potion, standard to drink potion of Enlarge Person, 5' step to B5

You're up

Male Half-Elf

...Is anything going to happen in the next like 3 rounds or so, or are you just waiting?

heheh

Arbiter:
Stealth while charging 1d20 + 23 ⇒ (13) + 23 = 36
Charge attack with Temple Sword from A5-6,B5-6 to I6-7, J6-7(with +2 for being Invisible) 1d20 + 4 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 4 + 2 + 2 = 28
Damage 2d6 + 5 ⇒ (5, 4) + 5 = 14
Crit Confirm 1d20 + 4 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 4 + 2 + 2 = 25
Damage 2d6 + 5 ⇒ (3, 3) + 5 = 11
Sense Motive if needed for AC 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (11) + 11 = 22

Perception DC 36 to notice Aurum while he is coming across the field.

Aurum appears in front of Sunahl, having run across the field, he is now 10 feet tall and wielding a massive golden sword. The sword falls with incredible speed heading for Sunahl's head.

Attack vs Sunahl AC with no Dex unless he beats a 36 Perception = 28 Potential Crit
Damage = 14
Crit Confirm = 25
Damage = 11

Your readied actions go off before my charge finishes but it still follows through unless you kill me or something like that.

Male Half-Elf

Wow, I don't think that could have gotten more perfect. The crit confirms and that leaves him just short of actually dead, meaning Kailin can't Life Link to help him out. Sunahl is down and bleeding out.
.
I don't think you'd actually take a hit from the readied actions until after yours though. They were basically set to go off when you dropped invisibility. I know technically they generally go before the action they interrupt, but your invisibility wouldn't drop until after your attack.
.
So, where exactly did Aurum appear on the map? If he's more than 5 feet away from Kailin, he won't take any hits from the readied actions (Sunahl will be down, Kailin out of range).

Aurum is in I6-7 and J6-7. Yeah readied and immediate actions are weird on pbp and yeah I haven't rolled all that well during my battles they've been mostly mediocre rolls. It's nice to start things off well lol. Still your turn I think though.

Male Half-Elf

Alright, Kailin does take a 5-foot step and hit Aurum for the readied action then (with him now being at K7).

Arbiter:
Attack of Opportunity: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21
Damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7

21 to hit, and 7 damage if it does.
.
:: Round... 3? ::

As the oversized monk pops into sight, Kailin reflexively makes a swing at him, stepping closer, but Sunahl is hit with violent force, and knocked to the ground instantly.

Kailin grits his teeth, steadies his blade and makes another slice at Aurum.

Arbiter:
Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
Damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9

Bah, 13 to hit, 9 damage.
.
I suppose I also need a stabilization check for Sunahl, though he's far enough down I think he needs a nat 20 to succeed.

Arbiter:
Stabilization: 1d20 ⇒ 8 Has something like a minus 11 or 12-ish

With a shuddering breath, the serpent fades into wispy clouds and vanishes.

He failed (clearly). Aurum's up.

Both attacks miss, the first strike coming so close Aurum feels the wind from the blade move past his face. He just manages to dodge, moving like the snake he just dispatched to avoid the blow.

I think that was the end of round 4. It should now be Round 5

Arbiter:
Fighting defensively with Temple Sword 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13
Damage 2d6 + 4 ⇒ (2, 3) + 4 = 9
Sense Motive if needed for AC 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (8) + 11 = 19

Attack missed with a 13

You're up.

Male Half-Elf

Well this is gonna be fun, isn't it. Hmm...
.
:: Round 5 then ::

Kailin makes another slash with his sword, taking a brief step back.

Arbiter:
Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12
Damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7

Bleh, 12 to hit, assumedly a no go. 5-foot step to L8. Aurum's turn.

Round 6

Aurum pulls a small bag out of his pouch and hurls it at Kailin.

Arbiter:
Move action to pull a tanglefoot bag
1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18 vs Touch AC
Sense Motive for AC 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (17) + 11 = 28

Attack vs Touch AC = 18
Tanglefoot Bag
If it hits, -2 to attacks and -4 to Dexterity.
Reflex DC 15 or be glued to the floor. Save = 1/2 move but all other penalties stay in place.
Lasts 2d4 ⇒ (4, 3) = 7 rounds.

Male Half-Elf

Arbiter:
Reflex Save: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 = 21

Pfft, what a use of a nat 20. I would say it's moderately useful since I can still 5-foot step, but you apparently need to make a concentration check for casting while entangled with the same DC as for casting defensively. Ah well.
.
:: Round 6 ::

The bag bursts on Kailin, but some quick reflexes keep the worst of it off him. He staggers away from Aurum a small distance, then begins making some motions, though hindered by the substance.

Arbiter:
Concentration Check: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9

He grits his teeth as the spell fails however, his movements too restrained from the tanglefoot bag.

You're up. Things aren't lookin' to good for Kailin.

Arbiter:
Move to K7-8, L7-8 Attack not defensively with Temple Sword 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25
Damage 2d6 + 4 ⇒ (6, 4) + 4 = 14
Crit Confirm 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15
Damage 2d6 + 4 ⇒ (4, 2) + 4 = 10
Sense Motive for AC if needed 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (15) + 11 = 26

Aurum charges forward and brings the golden sword in an arc like the sun moving across the sky. As the attack hits home, Aurum says calmly and not mockingly Yield, and we can walk out of here together. You are a worthy adversary but you cannot win.

You're going to hate me. Move to K7-8, L7-8 because I think you are in L9, if not let me know as he is just moving up next to you.
Attack = 25 Potential Crit
Damage = 14
Crit Confirm = 15
Damage if confirmed = 10

You're up. I hope Aurum doesn't come off as arrogant, he's just confident but doesn't revel in causing pain unnecessarily and will offer for an opponent to give up instead of being killed.

Male Half-Elf

Whoops, yeah L9. And heh, no he doesn't sound arrogant, 'cuz he's probably correct. And attack hits (though no confirm). And yet...
.
:: Round 7 ::

The blow makes a solid impact, but Kailin continues to stand. "Heh. You're probably right," he pants, "and thanks for the offer... but I'm not a fan... of just giving up!" With that, he takes another swing with the blade, despite the goop weighing him down.

Arbiter:
Attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14
Damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5

14 to hit, 5 damage, doubting it.

'Sides..." he adds. "You did a pretty bad number... on my friend. Least I can do... is shoot for some payback before I go." He finishes with a smirk and a laugh.

Okay, enough speech there, Aurum's up.

Yeah that misses.

Aurum sighs again, expecting the response. As you wish my friend.\

Arbiter:
Attack, fighting defensively with Temple Sword 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4 Potential Fumble
Fumble Check 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19 Not a fumble
Sense Motive for AC 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (19) + 11 = 30

Aurum tries to end the fight quickly and overextends himself, almost dropping his sword but managing to keep it from falling from his grasp.

Almost a fumble but didn't end up as one, just a miss.

You're up.

Male Half-Elf

This is probably really just waiting until I get knocked out, but hey :P And I'm pretty sure we're not using any kind of fumble rules, if that's what you meant? A natural 1 is just a miss, as far as I've heard.
.
:: Round 8 ::

Still surprisingly quick despite his injuries, Kailin strikes out as Aurum recovers from launching his own attack.

Arbiter:
Attack; Damage: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 41d8 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9

And speak of the devil! XD

In his haste however, Kailin puts himself off balance, needing to pull back swiftly.

Crit fail. As I said, I don't think we're using any sort of fumble rules, but if so, I've been doing things wrong, cuz this definitely isn't the first time he's crit failed.
.
Anyway, Aurum's turn.

Ok. I wasn't sure so I figured I'd put it in there in case we were. I just got an image in our head though of both of us tripping and falling one right after the other lol.

Begin Round 9

Aurum tries a different tactic and attempts to use his curved sword to pull Kailin's legs out from under him.

Arbiter:
5' step back, Fighting defensively Trip attack CMB vs CMD 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19
Sense Motive for AC if needed 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (4) + 11 = 15

5' step back, Trip attack with sword CMB = 19 vs your CMD

Your turn.

Just thought I'd throw this out there: Forfeiting leads to a giant divine energy death laser o' doom from the sky, so no walking out together unless you agree to draw.

Yay death laser! I might do it once just to see it in action. SEND YOUR LASERS OH MIGHTY ARBITER! I WILL DANCE WITH THEM!!

Male Half-Elf

The trip attempt hits. Think I may need some adjudication on something though.
.
When casting a spell with multiple requirements for concentration checks (such as casting defensively and while entangled), do you need to roll twice and succeed at each, or roll once and compare that to the DC of each individually (essentially, just needing to hit the highest one)?
.
I'll probably attempt it regardless, so I'll roll two now to keep things moving. If both would fail, then I'll call it a fail, if both would succeed, I'll call it success. If one would succeed (we'll say the first one) and the other would fail then... I'll wait for an answer to what happens.

Arbiter:
First Concentration Check: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6 Both against DC 16
Second Concentration Check: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9

And both fail, quite badly, so it fizzles. Kailin will stand up, provoking an AoO, then 5-foot step back to L10. Aurum's up.

I'm not positive on that, and I'll look for a definitive answer (seems like it's not super important right now). There's some discussion on it here, (down the page after they clear up the OP's misconception), but I haven't found anything more definitive. By raw it looks like you need to make a concentration check vs. each possible interruption, and lose the spell if any of the checks fail. Given the power of spellcasting, that may be a good idea.

Male Half-Elf

...Not sure you got the right link there :P But yeah, doesn't seem to have any bearing just yet at least.

Yeah I don't think that link really clears anything up lol.

Begin Round 10

Aurum moves forward and attacks.

Arbiter:
Move to L9 and attack defensively with temple sword. 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
Damage 2d6 + 4 ⇒ (6, 6) + 4 = 16
Sense motive for AC if needed 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (7) + 11 = 18

Move to L9, Attack missed. You're up.

Woops! Sorry, I was having a discussion with a friend in regards to this website, and was discussing whether or not going to the gym requires such a disclaimer (I feel the need to explain this to ensure nobody thinks it's my twitter). I really have no idea how I messed that up. Here's a more relevant link, though the discussion still hasn't been clear. I'll poke around more after I finish more pressing duties.

Male Half-Elf

@ Aurum: You also had the AoO, yes?
.
@ Arbiter: Wow, that's an interesting link (the first one that is). As for the second, I'll repeat what one of the posters said. 3 answers from 3 people. Nice :P
.
Anyway though, you can take your time on the search. I'll check it out some myself as well, rather than making you do all the work.

Oh I had forgotten about the aoo.

arbiter:
Aoo with temple sword fighting defensively 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23
Damage 2d6 + 4 ⇒ (5, 6) + 4 = 15
Crit confirm 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
Damage 2d6 + 4 ⇒ (2, 6) + 4 = 12
Sense motive if needed 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (10) + 11 = 21

aoo attack = 23 potential crit
Damage = 15
Doesn't confirm.

Male Half-Elf

No matter, the regular damage drops him. Kailin is down. Game over man, game over! :P

Awesome fight man! I love your build.

Male Half-Elf

Heh, well it's got quite a ways to go yet. The main reason for why I wanted to make it won't even start kicking in 'til 7+ actually :<

But thanks. And you've certainly done a nice job on yours as well :P

Sorry was on my phone earlier so didn't get to write my exit.

Aurum stands over his fallen opponent and looks up at the screaming patrons. Reaching down he closes his opponents open eyes and says a quick prayer of respect for the dead. Sheathing his golden sword he walks calmly out of the arena.
