3 things that would make this combat infinitely less confusing:
1) Everyone puts round markers for their round's actions.
Example: Round 1, Init 14
2) The GM posting who is up and who is yet to act when they respond.
Example: Lokien, Kast, and Calin (asleep) to go, then the bird.
3) Round Recap: The GM types up a quick note about what happened in the last round.
Briar manages to miss all his shots, but one of his hidden allies manages a successful swing - though it does only a little damage after reduction. Charlie moves up into position and summons a water elemental to flank with Nikolay. Barael flails about with his bow a moment before settling into a rhythm and hitting once. His precision damage seems to have worked which is good as less damage is done than he feels there should be. Fondo digs down and finds Barael’s blade resting in a puddle in the rock. He then pulls out a potion. Nikolay continues to dig deeply into the creature though the pain shooting through his limbs is hindering him visibly as he connects once, but does not confirm the critical. All the fire damage seems to go through and the smell of burning flesh fills the air, mingling with the bile of the breath weapon and the sweat and fear of combat. Dandilion moves up behind some rocks and rips a new hand out of the ether for her use.
Kleestad continues to press his advantage on the most troubling opponent in the room so far - Nikolay!
KL Claw: 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (18) + 21 = 39 to hit; 3d6 + 24 ⇒ (6, 5, 3) + 24 = 38 damage;
KL Claw: 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (1) + 21 = 22 to hit; 3d6 + 24 ⇒ (6, 4, 4) + 24 = 38 damage;
KL Bite: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (18) + 18 = 36 to hit; 3d6 + 24 ⇒ (3, 1, 5) + 24 = 33 damage;-Round 4-
Briar - 20 (10’ up)
IS1 - 20 (10’ up)
IS2 - 20 (10’ up)
Charlie - 18
Air Elemental - 18 (5’ up)(-36hp)(-1str)(in pain)

Such a mean Kast you are, kicking your friends in the face.
Uh...Kast has yet to be introduced to Lokien yet. We are acquaintances at best. I'm sure we'll get there...probably quicker if there is less face-stomping.

How long is standard before a DM can NPC a PC?
Depends on how quickly you want the games to go, GM. It's pretty much your call. However, most games settle into a posting speed and things go from there.
A game like this? I'd say 12 hours.
In other games it could quicker...or shorter.
Pretty much, it's considered rude to not post/check in at least once a day: players should be leaving notes if they are going to be missing more time.
Of course, all of that is my humble opinion based on my many successful PbPs.

Ok From what I know, I need to remove the following.
Purrin, Gnick Gnack Correct?

It does not help that people post infrequently
I find this funny. I checked repeatedly...but was trying to figure out order/round and whatnot.
But if the game is about posting often in combat = more actions in combat, I understand.
Kast, thank you. I like your idea of the summary, could I task you with doing those?
I would...but it comes with some cost. We'll start having to take turns, post our rounds when act, and generally play a more technically clean game.
If you want, I'll draw up a way to clean up our combats...but it's a group effort.

I agree.
I am not trying to say that you are not posting, you do. Others however say that they are going to catch up and do something and then they don't. It does get tiresome especially since one of the things that I asked was that people be able to post a few times a day.
I do like the sense of order that you want to bring.

Hello everyone.
I regret to say I am going to bow out of this game - I have clearly not been able to keep up with the pace you guys have set up. Truth of the fact, I am actually going to tone down some of the games in which I participate, to make sure I can handle all that is on my plate.
I want to offer my apologies to all of you for doing such a sidewinded thing, but I believe that the game will be better off without me, and perhaps finding someone that can adequately keep up with its posting rate.
Again, I am sorry I was not able to give this game the attention it merits, and good gaming everyone.
| Kast Phaer |
Kast, have you come up with the way to streamline posting for combat?
I gather it together. It takes time and energy...and just been busy. I would hope sometime by end of day Tuesday.

Wow. I missed a lot. For some reason my discussion tab showed no new posts. So, I like the cleaner combat system. I try to post my actions based on round, and then wait for everyone else ( or most everyone else ) before I post for the next round. If you guys want me to post a different way, just let me know. :)

Rest Well GM.
| Kast Phaer |
Kast, do you have the new combat system ready? We might need it soon.
Alright, peeps. I've been deputized to do this, but I still want your feedback and ideas. If you have something that works in your other games, please share it as well. I'm open...what I'm giving you is the technique my GMs and players have used in our 10K PbPs.
The key is being clean and ordered so that others can easily see what round it is, what initiative it is, and who is coming up next. In short, it's about communication. If we all communicate, then our combats will flow clean and neat.
Let's try this:
- GM: Rolls Initiative, posts Initiative
- Players: Every post, every turn, put up a header. Sample: Round 1, Init 14.
- GM: When resolving actions or commenting or running a monster, makes a note about who is up next. Sample: Amren, then the bad guys, then Garridan and Kast!
- Players: Every few posts, include a 'Stats' spoiler block. Get a macro or get used to typing up your posts in a saved, re-usable email so that you don't have to retype it.
Sample block:
Kast QwikkiStats:AC: 14 (Dex -1, Scale +5)
HP: 13/13
Right hand: Longspear
Left hand: Longspear
Mood: Feeling the heady rush of first real combatOther thing you can include is conditions gained and spell rounds. Yes, PLAYERS are responsible for accurately keeping track of spells and effects, counting rounds and ability damage and all that.
- Players: Make sure that you note your ending position on the map...whether you're moving your token or not. Pretty much, you can easily get a gmail account and you should be able to move your own token. If someone needs help with this, let me know.
Sample: Kast moves around the goblin and into flank. He's moved on the map safely, no AoO.
- Players: Make sure you're only taking one move and one standard action a round. If you're drawing your crossbow off your belt, moving, and firing...uh, that's four actions. Unless you're carrying the crossbow in your hands, it's not loaded.
- Players: When you show combat actions, show all relevant modifiers...we've been missing a lot of firing into combat mods (-4) and cover penalties (also -4).
Sample attack string:
1d20 + 8 + 1 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (11) + 8 + 1 + 1 - 2 = 19 to hit; (PBS, Bard, Rapid Shot)
1d8 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 + 1 = 3 damage; (PBS, Bard) - Players: When you cast a spell, write out the name and give the DC clearly. Don't make the GM look it up for you.
Sample: Kast casts Cause Fear on the goblin! DC 14 Will save!
I put in a hyperlink to the spell for bonus points, yo.
There you go. Questions? Ideas?

just a little preheads up April 2nd-5th my WoW guild gets together for a big ol party that well, yours truly is the cook for. Since its held in a state park in tennessee with very spotty intenet (and even phone) connection my posting during the 3 to 5th will be spotty at best. It literally snuck up on me this year or I would have mentioned something sooner. Sorry for any inconvienances. feel free to dm pc me. Super sorry for mentioning it so late.

Hey all, probably won't be able to post for a day or two. My wife pulled a muscle in her neck this afternoon and is currently on muscle relaxers for a few days. I'll be on primary little man watch until she's better, not sure how it will affect my posting rate.
Feel free to DMPC if need be.

you mean owe more moolah? *lawls*
as to what is on the menu, day one is the easy day, mostly grilled chicken and burgers and braughts.
Day 2 is the awesome baked potato bar, with 3 different kinds of cheesys and 3 different kinds of chili
Day 3 will be hoagies and picnicable items, like pasta salad (2 kinds) and potatoe salad.

Lokein, is there a way to blow up the section of the map we are in so that we can see what is taking place a little clearer?
Click on the 'Zoom'/magnifying glass on the menu.
