GM - Mark Garringer |
The discussion thread is now open! I will probably be getting the Gameplay Thread open tomorrow.

- Human Fighter - Jericho Greywind - Lucendar
- Human Investigator - Felix Nin - Ryveg

- Unknown Class - Tazo's 2nd - Tazo
I intentionally requested background lite versions of the characters submitted, and I want to keep things fairly generic at this point. You've heard rumors and the allure of Rappan Athuk and are adventurers looking to make a name for yourselves. Any (optional) connections you want to establish or throw around here in the discussion thread is fine by me. I am also going to spot you guys 1000 XP and 500 gp. The game will start in Zelkor's Ferry, a hamlet with about 20 residents. Feel free to spend the 500 gp however you see fit prior to your arrival in Zelkor's Ferry. Or hold on to as much of as you'd like and spend it when you arrive (though you may have less selection of gear in Zelkor's Ferry. Any of your starting gear may be sold at 50% the cost.
Parfin Groud |
Hmph. So THIS is where the road to wealth and glory starts? Parfin Groud looks around the hamlet that he has taken the trouble to travel to. If there is great treasure to be found in Rappan Athuk, nobody here has found any of it. Good thing I picked up those odd mercenary gigs before I came, I'd never find anything in equipment here.
The half-orc looks at a few of the others that will be his future associates in this endeavor. Hmm, couple of martial types, a damn spellcaster, some sort of priest, and whoknowswhatthehellhedoes. Hope he don't get in the way.
I got the impression this was going to be more combat and roll-play than role-play due to the lack of background requests and I admit I kinda liked the idea of just letting that type of stuff happen on the fly.
GM - Mark Garringer |
Parfin, you are not wrong. Any additional connection/background stuff you can do as much or as little as you want. On the fly is good.
You all magically wake up in Zelkor's Ferry and instinctively know and mostly trust each other PC. Annnnnnd go! :)
Dobin Cur |
Dobin starts awake
"I didn't know she was married..really I didn't..umm..where am I???"
His blurry vision clears as the strangeness of his surroundings sink in!
"Ah man! Seriously! I barely touched her and this is what they do!! Last time I ever fool around with a wizard's wife! Hey you! Sleeping beauty! Where am I?"
I will also send an updated .por file to you..and thank you for selecting Dobin!! Well, for as long as he lasts..lol
Rose Silversting |
Thanks for the selection! I'll go ahead and put together the scarred witch doctor. I don't have HeroLab, but hopefully my character sheets are good enough.
Rose looks around at the assembled company. Woah, that's a lot of really big men! she thinks. "Hey boys, show me where it hurts, and I'll make it feel all better."
Kwin Avassar |
Thank you for the selection!
I'll spend the extra cash and update his profile. And half way to second level is awesome! Here's hoping we live to see it!
"So, is there any reason we can't move out and get started in the morning? And just to confirm, we even shares for all of any valuables we find?"
GM - Mark Garringer |
I have linked the roll20 game in the header info and it should also show up under my name. Please click through and join the game. You can go to the settings icon once you've joined the game and change the Display Name to match your character. I've already setup the player handouts there, which currently should contain 3 maps. One is the hamlet of Zelkor's Ferry, one is the area around Zelkor's Ferry, and one is the regional map (this is also currently the default map displayed when you join the game).
To be clear, this game can be random and deadly. You will run into encounters which are over your CR. You'll need to know when to run. There are random tables and wandering monsters. We will do our best to navigate these deadly waters together. I am open to feedback about how things are going this is supposed to be a challenge and fun, not a brutal, soul-crushing grind of death.
Finally, under your profile information, in the 'Classes/Levels' line please put this line, and populate it with your character's information:
Cleric 3 HP: 18/18 | AC 18| 11 | 17 | CMD 14 | Fort +2| Ref +2| Will +6| Init +1| Perc +3| Sense Motive +10
As a reminder I will be rolling most skills for you when the time comes. If you want to use a skill for something please just let me know and I'll give you an indication as to your result. As a player and a GM there is a strange disconnect to me in the game when a player calls for a Sense Motive (for example) and then rolls, knowing they got some kind of outstanding success or failure which in turn colors the character's approach to a situation.
GM - Mark Garringer |
Everyone should have new private messages. I mention it because I don't always notice that little mail icon on the top of the page right way :)
GM - Mark Garringer |
However you guys want to invest your 500 is fine with me. Healing potions? Sure! Potion of CLW should run you 50 gp. Adding spells? Sure! No problem.
Parfin, my bad. Zelkor's Ferry is #27 on that map, and I added a label above it. It's about 70 miles to the main entrance of Rapan Athuk #9 from here (following the river to the Coast Road and then south then east from there).
Parfin Groud |
Looks like he just showed up.
Mark, one last .por file coming to you. I just realized I hadn't finished buying some of the gear I wanted to. I should be good now.
Felix Nin |
Sorry for the slow spin up on my part, I was sick and not paying attention to the forum... I am on it now... Looking forward to running this adventure with everyone, and thanks for picking me as well..!!
GM - Mark Garringer |
It sounds like Dobin, Jericho, Kwin are 'in for the night' and ready to leave at first light. Parfin, Felix and Rose may yet have outstanding business to attend before moving the scene. If anyone wants to do anything else before moving the scene just let me know. I've also updated the roll20 map based on Rasmus' directions.
Also don't forget to deduct 1 gp for the Inn. :P
Parfin Groud |
Depending on whether the party feels the need to pack heavy for the journey or not will determint if I'll buy one of the donkeys. If we are going to "travel light" I'll pass on that for now. For what I can tell we'll be walking anyway.
Consider me ready to travel at first light. Oh, 1gp deducted.
GM - Mark Garringer |
Rose, I'll double check in the morning but I think the whip you make a normal hit roll first, then a trip attempt if successful? Unless someone else fact checks it's first...so we may retcon that slightly if needed.
Parfin Groud |
From what I see you can make a trip attempt in place of an attack, its not something that you can do once you make a successful attack.
GM - Mark Garringer |
@Parfin - yeah, I was thinking of monsters with trip/grab as part of an attack. Based on this prd text:
You can attempt to trip your opponent in place of a melee attack. You can only trip an opponent who is no more than one size category larger than you. If you do not have the Improved Trip feat, or a similar ability, initiating a trip provokes an attack of opportunity from the target of your maneuver.
Since the whip is at reach the AoO for not having Improved Trip is ignored. You used a -4 for cover instead of a -2 for partial cover, he should exclude his DEX bonus from CMD since he was flat-footed but he doesn't have a DEX bonus. So a 13 trip actually would bring him down. I've noted his token on roll20. He can take a prone AoO at you.
Kwin Avassar |
I am liking the maps that we are getting on the Roll20 site. Quick question on it... Is there functionality to cover area of effects like Color Spray? Was my description of where I wanted to lay down the spell good enough? Do we need to add coordinates to the map so I can list off the affected spells, or is a description good enough for you?
GM - Mark Garringer |
They don't have spell template tools, but you can use the drawing tools there to draw things on the map as well. There are line and shape tools that you can play around with. When I play a wizard I usually end up drawing a few to use.
GM - Mark Garringer |
Slight delay tonight. I had 4 upgrades to do today, which turned into 11, and 2 of them went sideways so...bleh :)
Parfin Groud |
Just pool it together while we adventure and split when we return? Of course we need to account for items found, especially when they can be used. Not sure if we account for the items on their own or base it on their gold valve though. Anyone else have an idea?
Dobin Cur |
I have always felt that items that make sense to go to a particular person (like armor to fighters, wands to wizards, etc) just go to those people. Money is divided up and if we want to pool and get something special...well we can do that. I do not care if the +1 armor I get is worth less than the wand of fire the wizard got...most likely he/she will be using it to keep us alive, so we all benefit....that just my take...
GM - Mark Garringer |
I have utilized various methods in the past, but I'm open to whatever you guys want to agree upon and don't feel the need to step into this particular discussion unless asked specific questions.
Rose Silversting |
I'm not particular about loot systems. I don't like tracking it so I will defer to someone who does!

I've used a google doc/spreadsheet for another game I'm playing in which works reasonably well. I will go ahead and say whoever wants to be the party treasurer can earn an extra 10% XP for doing so.
Felix Nin |
I am good with all that has been discussed, I am not overly worried about the loot, I believe that if it helps the group out to have someone use an item then we should. I am here to see how our story progresses and what secrets are held within this adventure... 8)
