Venture-Captain Drandle Drenge, a stout and hardy Taldan with thin, graying hair and a thick, bushy mustache, unfurls a map on his butcher-block table and places a meaty finger on the parchment. “The abandoned district of Beldrin’s Bluff was once the gem of Absalom’s Precipice District—now it is but a weathered crag of broken rock at the edge of the roiling sea. When the great quake hit ten years ago, entire blocks of the Bluff sheared from the mainland. Cliffside tearooms and exclusive estates fell into the waves and carried hundreds of nobles to a watery grave. An elite academy, called the Tri-Towers Yard, remained on the mainland, but sank wholesale into the earth. Children unfortunate enough to survive the quake lay pinned under debris as sewer water slowly rose from the ground and drowned them. Nearly every student perished."

“Today, crumbled stone walls and weed-filled lots sprawl where gentlemen’s clubs once filled with pipe smoke and hobnobbing lords. The Drownyard—er, that’s what the illmannered call the school these days—lies behind a fence of black iron pikes, constructed by the families of the dead to discourage morbid trespassers."

““Even respected archaeological groups have been denied official access. Our own Society has itched to explore the site ever since the quake—that is, ever since we discovered that the school fell through the roof of a lost necropolis. Unfortunately, the emotional trauma attached to the school has remained fresh. But finally, after ten years of mourning, the politically-connected families of dead students have sanctioned our delve request.”

With a toothy smile and a clap, Drenge says, ““I’m pleased to announce that I’ve selected your team for the delve. I want you to find a way into the necropolis, document your findings with professional detail, and recover artifacts of historical significance. The Society is interested in one artifact in particular—a two-finger ring topped with a ruby salamander.”

"A lost necropolis!?" An exceptionally dark-hued and sharp-featured Wayang's response to the briefing would, were it most any other race, be described as "lighting up." "I thank you for such a privilege, Captain Dreng! Do we know who built it? Have we any idea of how old it is? And what is this ring?" He pauses, as though an afterthought has caught him off-guard, and his next question is spoken with caution rather than enthusiasm. "What has become of the noble children's corpses?"

Xasay wears his indigo hair in an elegant mane, and his eyes, though many folk cannot help but mistake them for mirror-like platinum-white, are in fact radiant infrared. He wears a modest teak breastplate over jolly and clownish (by Wayang standards) exotic garb. His left forearm is covered by a lovingly-polished buckler of black steel, and below that he carries a dense bundle of the hallmark stylized metal stencils of his race in a sweatless death-grip.

As the Venture-Captain welcomes the group, a small figure seems to appear from a dark corner. She wears a beautifully-crafted curved sword over one shoulder, and a strange, multi-branched spear over the other. She is clearly a wayang, from the color of her skin, her charcoal-grey hair, and her fine features, though she’s unusually small even for her kind. She bears the tattoos and scars typical of many wayangs, but these seem to have been placed with a particular goal in mind – to help her disappear. Her slate-grey skin is covered with fine, irregular bands, whorls of lighter and darker greys and a scattering of white and black dots, all of which work together to confuse and distract the eye, making it difficult to focus on her clearly.

A faint, grim smile crosses her face as Dreng describes the sudden death of hundreds of nobles, though it fades quickly enough when she learns that many children died – horribly - in the same quake. She listens to the Venture-Captain’s briefing impassively, though her black eyes do seem to glitter for a moment when he mentions the ring and its large ruby.

She listens to the questions being thrown out by the others, thinking on whether she knows or has heard anything about this school in her relatively brief time in Absalom. In a break in the conversation, occasioned by Acel’s impressive burp, she introduces herself, simply and professionally, ”Ashka Halfshadow. Look forward to working with you all.” Hearing her name brings the question to mind, is she so small she only casts half a shadow, or does her appearance make her so hard to see that it’s as if she’s half made of shadow?

Ashka gives Vires a scathing glance at his little joke. "It's a job, not a dating scene, " she says curtly. She gives Xasay a vaguely cordial nod, then turns her attention back to the Venture-Captain.

“Moldering texts tell of a coastal necropolis, rich with ancient treasures. There is no indication in the texts of who built it or why. Until the Tri-Towers Yard sank, no one knew the necropolis’s location. What you will find down there is anyone’s guess. Rumors abound that Beldrin’s Bluff is full of the restless dead, and I’m sure that applies double to the Drownyard. As to whether the place is still flooded, no one knows. That’s what we are sending you to find out. However, no one expects you to explore any flooded areas. If you find them, report back, and we will send a more experienced team out in the future.”

“The ring does indeed have a bit of an interesting story. In ancient times, a wealthy merchant cut a ruby salamander ring from the hand of young cat burglar named Horastian. Horastian later became a renowned information broker and art collector. The Pathfinder Society hopes to magically locate the long-dead thief and his fabled hoard by using the ring as a divination focus.”

Drandle Drenge pulls an iron key from his waistcoat. “I leave you with the key to the Drownyard gate. Remember, the Drownyard is a deeply personal site for many powerful Inner Sea families. You will tread upon the graves of their children. Be sure to give the site the respect it deserves.”

The Tri-Towers Yard was an elite academy for the youth of the noblest families of Beldrin’s Bluff. The quake struck at noonday. Now the TriTowersYard is known as the Drownyard, a desolate ruin filled with strange black ichors and salty brine.

The VC briefing occurred in the late evening, which I failed to inform you of. (Sorry, it was outside of the canned text.) Nosing around in the Beldrin's Bluff area late at night is probably not the best idea. It will probably take some time for any shopping to happen the next day. So you don't have a lot of time available to explore before you are expected at the dinner. It's up to the group, though, if you'd rather push through to the Drownyard first.

All the same, she aims to be a professional, and she's got a job to do. She sets out with Acel to do some shopping, but soon parts ways with the gnome, as their tastes are more than a little different.

After a few frustrating encounters where shopkeepers try to sell her a dress she doesn't want, she manages to find a place catering to young lordlings where she finds something suitable. It's a suit of watered silk, in shades of smokey grey with whorls of deep forest green, that compliment the patterns on her skin nicely. You are greeted in the foyer by the Lady Dacilane, a short, plump, dark-haired woman of Chelish descent. Although she is extremely polite and proper, you can tell she is uncomfortable dealing with people of your social station. You do detect the tone of sadness she coveys is very much real. "Um, yes, which fork is for the salad again?". Fahd tries to be polite, thanking the group for his invitation. He tries to hold his tongue and not ask pointed questions, waiting for the proper time.

Like the others, Ashka is careful not to embarass herself too much in terms of etiquette. And as much as she doesn't care for or about the nobility, she shows her sympathy for the family having lost a child. "It is an honor to be here with you, remembering your daughter," she tells Lady Dacilane.

"Oh! I know this one! The large fork with the long, flat tines is for leafy greens, the large fork with only three tines and the sphere on the end of the handle is for root vegetables, the smaller fork with the twisted, alicorn-like tines is for legumes and sprouts, the small, convex fork is for fruit salads, the fork with the long handle and very thin tines is for land-meat salads, the very small fork with the tines like a vampire's fangs are for seafood salads, the fork with the short handle and very long tines is for pasta salads, the fork with the long handle and diagonally-splayed outer tines is for dessert salads, and the perfectly average-sized fork with the jade-and-obsidian inlay is for magical salads!"

Ashka rolls her eyes, thought the effect is diminished somewhat by their being entirely black. ”There’s a special fork just for salad?” she asks, her voice full of disdain, when she hears Fahd’s question. When Xasay finally gets to the end of his explanation of fork handles and tines, Ashka sits dumbstruck, unsure whether her fellow wayang is completely mad or just pulling her leg.

Fahd nods at the advice, picks up the largest fork on the table and eats his entire meal with it.

Xasay does manage to spot a harpsichord in the parlor, although it is horribly out of tune. You get the impression it serves more as decoration than as musical instrument.

Lady Dacilane listens politely to the group's stories and discussion. "It's good to hear that there are still those who understand the proper use formal dining utensils," she says, although you detect mild disapproval in some of her reactions to some of the other matters. Toward the end of the dinner, she finally broaches the subject of her daughter and the TriTowers Yard.

“My daughter Junia was one of so many children lost. Hundreds of them pinned under the rubble in that sinkhole. The black water rising—the kids screaming.” She quiets for a moment. “None of us could get to them.”

When dinner is concluded, Xasay brings out his portable clavichord and begins playing a piece he composed specially for the evening.

Perform (Keyboard): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8

Unfortunately, in composing it Xasay somehow confused Chelaxian Human sensibilities with those of Halflings. Only his natural talent keeps it a disappointment rather than a disaster.

"Anything...anything at all. Any word or sign of her that you find, please tell me. I've learned nothing since that fateful day, and I miss her terribly. I you do manager to find her, please bring her home."

"I do remember that Junia once mentioned that some of the lesser children—not my Junia mind you— would skip class to tell ghost stories by
candlelight in an abandoned corridor beneath the school. Beyond that, I really can't tell you anything more about the place."

The Lady listens politely to Xasay's performance, but as it progresses, it becomes more and more apparent that she is using all her willpower to maintain her composure. Almost as soon as he finishes, she starts herding the group towards the door.

"Thank you for coming. Good luck with your explorations, and please, any word or sign of Junia, let me know."
