Cursed and haunted, Ustalav rests upon the bones of the foul empire of the legendary lich-archmage known as the Whispering Tyrant. In the centuries since the undead conqueror’s defeat, the land has been resettled, but superstition and horror still lurk in the country’s shadows.

The sheriff stops his departure at Griar's words, and nods an affirmative. "Just so happens, it's a busy time for planting for my regular deputies. I only have the one that can manage to get away from his regular work, and he'll be keeping busy with the locals. Let's say this: you keep me informed of what you find, and you keep your noses clean with the townsfolk, and I'll deputize you to figure is one out with me. Do we have an agreement?" He offers Griar a hand to shake on the deal, and any others who wish to do so.

"Agreed." Griar takes the offered hand. This is what he had been hoping for.

Baer nods, but does not agree on her own. She knows that, for her, legal agreements conflict with her more mercurial nature...and she avoids putting herself in such situations.

Baer sleeps.

Kendra shows Baer all points that might lead outdoors. She explains that they moved into the house when she was 5, and that the family builders clearly took their proximity to a maximum security prison very seriously. The doors have masterwork locks, and the windows have two sets of lockable shutters.

She asks that for this night, as she processes further the death of her father, that Baer stay in the room next to hers upstairs. She indicates that the ground floor room is likely best for Griar, with his heavy armor, and the other two rooms upstairs can be for Cassandra and Kwoon.

Before you all turn in for the night, Cassandra quietly takes Kendra aside, exchanging a few words and a polite embrace, and bids you all well as she steps out the door into the evening. She simply explains that remaining here for a full month does not fit into her current endeavors, and offers no room for questions.

During his watch, Griar hears and sees little of note. The house settles for the evening, and there are many creaks and groans.

Kwoon is woken at midnight, and during the second half of his watch...
(Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15)
...he thinks he hears something far off, perhaps in town, but is uncertain what it might be. He wakes Baer for her watch at 4 am.

Baer's watch is uneventful, and you are able to make good time both preparing for your day, and briefly examining the Professor's study. It is a fine collection of texts on several subjects, predominantly among them the Whispering Way. A cursory glance through a few tomes indicates that there is little here you do not already know.

Helena begins preparing breakfast for all to eat at 8:30, and after you have enjoyed eggs and hot cereal, there is also coffee. Kendra smiles, and says, "An indulgence of my father's. I do not know his source, and fear what we have may not last us the whole month. Perhaps I can send to Leipstadt for more."

As she explains this, there is a knock on the door, and Helena ushers in Sheriff Caeller. "Miss Kendra. Guests. It would appear that I am in need of your assistance as well. There's been an incident in town, and after our conversation last night, I would appreciate your insights. Will you come with me?"

In the morning, Baer takes another crack at making sense of her duster.

"I was confused yesterday...out of sorts. The Void will help me focus," Baer says to herself. She will cast Identify.

She will pack lightly for her trip about town, leaving a majority of her heavy gear behind.

She agrees to accompany the Sheriff and help.

Griar smiles at Kendra. "Yes, the coffee is very good. Perhaps we can find out who was your father's source. It is a luxury that I could get used to very easily."

When the Sheriff arrives, Griar listens to the request.

"Of course, Sheriff. What has happened?"

Griar had donned his armor with his clothing, so it is a small matter to collect his weapons and backpack. Griar is used to lugging its weight around, and it contains useful items.

Baer's investigation reveals a curious illusion enchantment that has been placed upon the duster. When the command word, "lamaron", is spoken, the wearer's appearance changes to make him or her appear as a middle aged Varisian man - an incredibly ordinary one at that.

This is a reskinned cap of human guise for Medium-sized creatures.

The Sheriff leads you all out of the Lorrimor Manor, turns right, and heads down the road. You cross a footbridge, pass a sizable house on the left ("Belongs to Councilwoman Mirta Straelock," Sheriff Caeller notes), and come to a fork in the road. The sheriff leads to the right, past a large wooden post with all manner of flyers and notices posted to it ("The Posting Poles"). He takes you towards the river, but turns left on the near side and leads you up a hill.

Ahead, you see a 25-foot-tall, moss-covered stone statue that overlooks the river. The statue depicts a proud, muscular human man dressed in leathers and wielding a truncheon. "A likeness of Warden Hawkran," the sheriff shares with Kwoon and Griar. When you get closer, however, you see that the statue has been vandalized in a particularly grisly manner. Blood has been splashed over a good portion of the statue, the ground surrounding it, and a large "V" painted over the listing of the names of those who perished in the prison fire those many years ago.

"One of the farmers told me about this just after first light. Could be it happened when you heard the noise in the night, Mr. Kwoon. I took an initial look around, but wasn't able to find trace of who might have done this. Your thoughts?"

"I'm not an experienced investigator Sheriff, but there are a few things that I'm sure you have already examined, so pardon me if I make some rookie mistakes or state the obvious." Is this sheriff an idiot? Surely not.

"First, the blood is extensive. It must mean that either a creature was killed here at the scene to provide that amount of blood, or it was killed in a different location and someone brought the blood here. Now, if the creature were killed here, then there would be a trail of blood leading somewhere. Since that doesn't appear to be the case, then there is a dead creature somewhere nearby. Finding the corpse that supplied the blood would be the first step in figuring out who desecrated the statue. Have you had any reports from the local farmers of a missing animal? If not, we can assume whomever did it owned the animal. At least, I hope it is animal blood."

Clearing his throat, he continues, "Second, you should check this area for magic. While I'm unfamiliar with this process, I'm sure either Baer or one of your local priests might be able to do this. Perhaps the blood supplied is magical in nature."

Hung Hei Kwoon looks at the Sheriff. "And third, is there anyone who would have something against Mr. Hawkran? Who is he exactly? Obviously I'm not from around here, so uncovering a motive first can often solve a mystery if other avenues of investigation prove fruitless. Perhaps it is not a coincidence that the Professor was killed at the prison, and now we see someone desecrating the statue of the Warden."

Male Ifrit Slayer 1| AC 16| T 13 | F 13 |HP 12| CMD 16 | F +3 | R +6 | W +2 | Init +3 |Per +4 |

Griar frowns. "None at all." This being directed at the Sheriff. "I think I will just stand clear. You must have someone in town who is skilled at tracking... Griar wonders if any of his new found friends has the skill. Perhaps Baer, she seems to know what she is looking for. Kwoon seems to have a keen analytic mind as well.

As for Griar himself, he is feeling worried. The statue defacement seems irrelevant. Something for the Sheriff to worry about, but not connected to the Whispering Way, or Professor Lorrimor's death in any way. The paladin thinks about Kendra, back at her house. The Professor asked them to protect her, not mind the Sheriff's business for him.

Still, a strange coincidence. So much happening all at once.

The Sheriff nods. "Normally I'd get the other deputies together for a full search, but with them in the fields, that's why I got you all, but also if this is, you know, somehow related to what you're getting ready to look into. For the Professor and Miss Kendra.
As for your questions, I don't know about the V. Maybe for a name? There's a couple folks whose names start with V around here.
No folks reporting missing animals yet. Pharasma guide us if it's not animal.
Warden Lyvar Hawkran was in charge of the prison when it burned to the ground 50 years ago. He's a hero here - no one in town could be against him. To be honest, if Miss Kendra hadn't vouched for you, and I didn't trust you, I would have figured it was one of you what did it."

He joins Baer in looking around for tracks, and between the four of you, it takes perhaps ten minutes of searching before you find a set of human footprints (barefoot), that head to and from the statue. They lead you back down the hill to a rather poorly kept shack. "That's Gibs Hephenus' place," Sheriff Caeller offers. "He's a pain to deal with, as you know from the graveyard, but this kind of desecration? Seems more than he's capable of." The sheriff scratches his head in thought.

Following the Sheriff, he thanks him for answering his questions. As they reach the shack, Hung Hie Kwoon responds "Well, I have been told never to underestimate an adversary. Still, we should see if there is a dead animal nearby. Without that, this could just be coincidence. Or maybe Mister Hephenus saw something and is simply a witness. I'll look about the place, please inquire to Mister Hephenus, as he may not wish to speak to strangers."

Hung Hei Kwoon will look around the shack to see if there is any blood or a dead animal around.

Without seeing any blood to implicate this man, let us hold on our eagerness to attack."

Baer confirms that this is where the trail leads. He stands back about 20' (as so not to seem too confrontational) and waits on the Sheriff.

Master Kwoon does not yet understand the people who live here...he will. He will soon see all their ignorance and intolerance.

Between Kwoon and Baer's snooping about the perimeter of the house, their combined efforts uncover a grotesque collection underneath a pile of firewood behind the shack: a bloodstained war razor, and a waterskin that had obviously been filled - then emptied - of blood. There is no sign of what creature this might have come from, but the purpose to which these items had been put is obvious.

The Sheriff frowns deeply at the sight of the items, and steps up to knock heavily on Gibs' door. A groggy bellow comes from inside, and after a few moments and some loud stomping, the old farmer throws open the door. He is finishing pulling on overalls, as though readying to go out to the fields. He stops when he sees you, gives you all a scowl, then fixes on the sheriff. "What now, Benjen? Thought I got enough from you yesterday after this... menagerie went through the Restlands."

(1)

The Sheriff stoically stares back. "Gibs, there's been a bit of an incident, and we think you know something about it. Can we talk inside?"

(2)

Gibs crosses his arms defensively. "We can talk here just fine. What?"

(3)

The Sheriff asks, "Gibs, can you tell me what you did last night? You were headed back home after I finished with you yesterday. What did you do after that?"

(4)

"Nothin. Came back here, ate, drank, fell asleep. Slept terrible, too, or must have, 'cause I'm exhausted. Even overslept this morning, and am late for working the fields. You gonna tell me what this is about?"

(5)

The Sheriff points towards the war razor and the waterskin. "These belong to you, Gibs?"

(6)

The old man looks them over, his face flushing slightly at the blood on them. "You know damn well that's my razor, Benjen, and my father's before me. How the hells did you come by it, and why isn't it on my mantle?"

Before going further, if you want to interject at any of the numbers listed above, feel free to do so. Otherwise, you can make sense motive checks to see what your character percieves about Gibs' responses.

Does he lie? Speak true? Or...something else?

"We know you need to tend to your fields, Gibs." Griar's face is stern, but not hostile.
"Someone defaced the Hawkran memorial last night. The Sheriff tracked them here, to your house."

Griar pauses to let that sink in. "We are not assuming your guilt. Our only goal here is justice, so perhaps you should take a few moments to answer our questions."

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22

Gibs looks at Baer. "Of course I knew him. Always up and down the countryside, with strangeness following him everywhere he went." He says this last with a very pointed look at you.

He listens to Griars' words, his face going from a hard edge to grave concern as you speak. "Damn right I'm not guilty. Sheriff, you can't believe that I'd do that. Lived here all my life, and wouldn't raise a hand against their memory under pain of death!"

The Sheriff sighs, taking off his hat and scratching his head before replacing it. "I want to believe you, Gibs, but the evidence is against you. Come with me to town. Like the man says, I want to get this settled and send you back to work as soon as possible." Gibs looks like he is about to protest further, then seems to think better of it, keeps his mouth shut, slips on his shoes, and gets ready to follow the sheriff into town.

Sheriff Caeller takes the razor and the waterskin and places them in a sack, one he carries quite carefully. He turns to you all and quietly says, "There'll probably be a fine, but I'm going to do my best to keep it quiet, and get one of the other deputies to handle cleanup on the statue. You all should get to work on the professor's research - I get the sense this isn't the only strangeness we're likely to see if he was on to something big."

Unless you have further questions, they walk away into town.

What do you do?

"V?" Gibs gives you a funny look. "No. Why?"

The Sheriff looks like he's thinking about it for a bit, then shakes his head. "I'll give it a more thorough search later with one of the councilmen in attendance. They'll want to make sure this is properly observed, and, to be honest, I have what I need for now. Come see me later, and I'll let you know if we find anything." The temple of Pharasma has an eastern facade that displays an intricate stained-glass mural depicting a stern Pharasma judging Count Andachi, one of Tamrivena's most infamous previous rulers. He then turns to Kwoon. "Yes, the late Lorrimor. Unfortunately I was notified too late, and only just arrived in town this morning. I have not yet had a chance to visit his home and family, though I understand they are expecting me. Did you have business with the man? I am partially responsible for helping settle his estate, so if you do, you may direct it towards me." Marckus says as he looks over a scroll.

"My business with the Professor is done...my duty to him is not. And, I thought, he estate was settled with the reading of the will. No matter, I can take you back after we finish here," Baer says, not willing to make plans for Griar or Kwoon.

"Why don't you have a seat? I'll come get you when we finish," Baer looks about for a bench for the unnamed man to wait upon.

"Ah, were you present for the reading of the will? Yes, yes, that was the document pertaining to his most private affairs, though he made other legal arrangements for certain assets after his passing, much of which I am helping these disorganized priests order and execute. It seems he took care in making arrangements for his surviving family, namely a certain Kendra Lorrimor, his daughter I believe. I am scheduled to see her later this morning, so that may work out well." Marckus concludes.
"Was there something you needed?" he asks, looking up.

Baer snorts. She turns to await the arrival of Father Grimburrow so that they may proceed to their business.

Griar finds a column to lean against, while waiting for Father Grimburrow.

Sorry, in-laws in town have set me back for time. Will post over the next few hours tonight.

After a time, the very withered and wrinkled Father Grimburrow steps out of a back office and approaches the four of you. His stern gaze barely wavers as he looks over your diverse assembly, and then gestures and says, "Well, what is it you need? Was there something wrong with the funeral or the burial arrangements? Come, come, what do you want?"

Hung Hei Kwoon steps forward and bows with a fist in his palm. "Thank you for seeing us wise one. We appreciate you giving us an audience. But as to what we want, the sheriff has deputized us since many of his deputies are working in the fields. Part of what the sheriff wants is for us to follow up on the desecration of the statue, that had a bloody 'V' painted on it. We believe that the key lies in examining some information back at the prison, and, so, the journals of Professor Lorrimor said that a crypt under your protection contained some items that would be essential in that investigation. I assure you, as deputies of the law, we would return these items upon our completion. We'd be willing to sign for it, or whatever your customs are in this land."

Hung Hei Kwoon takes a deep breath, as that was a lot of talking.

Grimburrow gives Kwoon a hard look, then turns to the others as though looking for a further explanation.
