Before he gets far from the group, Anton stops at a weird sense of déjà vu. This has happened before on this hill. Ugh, Nim is rubbing off on me. He shakes his head and sighs, then goes back to rejoin the others, cleaning his weapon. "As Nim said, we have other things we need to do first; but you said something before about ruins?"

For the record:
Anton's initiative had changed due to a readied action. I merely acted out of order with Aedalis (as we commonly do) with a walk-and-talk. Then -- over four days later -- we finally dropped out of initiative, so Anton took a full-round action and gave a little speech. Nothing extraordinary from my point of view.

Also, Aycenia was disguised too, as Anton reported.

I thought we were waiting on the RMD to respond to Anton. :)

Is that XP... 800 for each PC, or 800 XP for each monster for 1600 to each PC? I am guessing the first. (1600 would level us up, while 800 would leave us 411 XP short of 4th level)

Once we are done conversing with the RMD... the plan was to return to the cannibal camp and check up on the others.

Nim huffs a little at the devil's reply. They better be unharmed...

What else can you tell us about the island? Anything else remarkable we have not yet encountered? Do you know of a way off of the island? Nim peppers the RMD with questions ,oblivious to his own numerous raw wounds...

Corb:
Perhaps the devil can assist you in locating that which you seek. :)

You can't be sure about anything regarding the RMD. Normal Chupa's can't even talk and are just slightly smarter than animals. He seems to struggle with words a lot so you know it is not used to coversing this much.
This one is a major abberation of it's kind.
You assume it probably eats most things before it speaks to them. Of course no one has said that they are doubting his word, sensing motive, so at this point you are taking what he is saying as gospel.
As far as your guess, it could be something like that, it seems a likely description.

Nim stands silently by, listening intently to the exchange between the others and the devil.

At Mihai's words and the devil's response, Nim moves alongside the cleric.

At the devil's flattering remark to Anton, Nim sharply inhales as if to speak before exhaling slowly and saying nothing. He waits for the ranger's response...

Male Human (Varisian) Cleric (Varisian Pilgrim archetype) 6

Mihai takes note of Nim's silent support, but does not let the devil's words affect him. He does however listen for Anton's reply and the intent of the halfling's words... part of his thoughts focused upon whether the gift of The Wanderer should be withdrawn.

The last time we were gone this long, they were attacked by cannibals -- and thank you for telling us; we were barely in time to save one of my best friends. I'm confident that we can find the ruin from your description."

The halfling pauses meaningfully, then continues in a reasonable tone. "And I will answer a question with a question. You make your way from the Dark Dryad's hill to your camp. It is about a 2 hours treck but the journey is without incident.
You are greeted first by Ishirou who appears on the path before giving you a nod and almost a smile.

Gelik shreiks in excitement and wants a complete telling of your tale. You show him the Journal and he gets even more excited. He wants to know all of these details as well.

Sasha is pleased to see all of you but is particularly happy to see Nim for some reason :]. She tells you that between she and a few of the others they have made some repairs to the place as well as scouting out about 5 miles in each direction and have cleared away any dangerous carnivores.

Jask has obviously had a hand cleaning up the area as well. Everything seems neat and tidy and there are new cots for you in several rooms.

Aerys seems as dour as always except for sharing a brief smile with Anton.

You share your story and the island, the Dark Dryad and what you have found out about Ieana.

Jasks keen mind immediately thinks of a solution to your issue with the ocean that the RMD mentioned.

What if we follow you there and watch what happens. If you go in we can stay out to make the ocean go away again after a time if needed each day?
Hopefully we can replicate what she did. Did you ask the Red Mountain...I mean Grrrolik, what he did for her?

How can we trust that as soon as you go into this mouth that the damned Devil won't attack us? I don't trust him, I trust Nim's instincts.

Maybe if we appease it or give it something? We have to have something it wants right??? I mean other than our blood...

Corbrius:

He gets you alone for a moment, We should dig up the treasure. Keep It's not just the gold I am after. There may be weapons and magic buried there as well. Magic we can use against Ieana or the Beast! It's supposed to be a major haul!

Either that or we kill the Mountain Devil before we go into the mouth it spoke of. We could get it here to talk and all of us could ambush it...between all of us we should be able to finish it. Then the only real threats would be the Singing bird women and that b%&&@ who stuck us here.

Nim is pleased to see everyone is doing well at camp, particularly Sasha (Who is likely somewhat concerned at Nim's state of health, as he is still bearing many fresh and open wounds). He is also happy to see the improvements around camp and to hear of their successful explorations of the surrounding terrain. Did you encounter anything interesting?

As the conversation turns to following Ieana under the sea as well as concerns regarding the RMD, Nim adds in his own comments...

Your plan seems sound Jask, but Corbious is likely correct in assuming there is a way to return from the other side. That being said, I would think it wise to plan for both contingencies. If we don't return after 2 days, you activate from this side just in case we are trapped.

You can't trust the devil Sasha. It acts only for itself. If it decides that eliminating us is possible, I believe it will do so.

I am not sure what we could give it Gelik, and even if we did find something it desired, it would not likely stay satisfied for long. I think a violent confrontation is likely unavoidable at some point. Apex predators do not like sharing territory.

That is definitely an option Aerys... but there are some among us who may find it a disagreeable act...

Corbius and DM Stephen:
Agreed... but how do you suppose for the two of us to run off into the jungle and dig it up without having to explain where we are going? I am also uncomfortable with leaving the camp just the two of us... the RMD is likely to be watching and may take the opportunity to attack us or the others while we a separated and vulnerable. Is Ishirou willing to let the others in on his secret? For the sake of all?

Can I see the map again?

How long is it going to take to travel to the spot on the map from camp? Any obvious obstacles or difficulties to be encountered?

Anton nods thoughtfully. "That is a good point. The only thing worse than fighting a powerful spellcaster would be fighting her and you at the same time. I agree that you should stay away while she has magic left."

Later, after they return to the castaways' camp...

Anton furrows his brow in concentration. "Yes, she made him fetch her a snake. Say, Tragershen. That reminds me of something. Remember that translation you made in the altar chamber of the temple below us?"

Anton shrugs with his palms up. "So far, the only lie that Grrrolik has told is that he'd hunt us. Others have pretended to be our friends, or been open about being our enemies. People can change, but I think that after an honest friend like Pezcock, the next-best is a false enemy."

Tragershen's translation:
Examining the wall, Tragershen says "Hmm. Aklo, the language of evil fey, derro and some other-worldy monstrosities. Someone has done a good job making it legible. A close translation of it would be:

To Command the Very Tides to Rise Up and Eschew What Lies Below: Empower the Four Sentinel Runes with the Blood of a Thinking Creature Tempered by the Kiss of a Serpent’s Tongue. Anoint the Tide Stone with Waters Brought from the Sea in a Vessel of Purest Metal. Invoke the Lord’s Sacred Name to Wrap His Coils around the Sea Itself that He Might Lay Bare What Lies Below and Cast Down Your Enemies on the Waves above.

After reading it translated aloud, Tragershen reviews it again, mouthing the words in Alko as he does. When finished, he emphasizes "Yes, that is about as exact translation as you can make between the languages."

Nim smiles. It is interesting to me that you seem to assume I am referring to you Anton...

As for your assessment of the devil's trustworthiness, I care not for which lies he has or has not told us. What threats he has made and not carried. My mistrust of him has to do with his obvious scheming and manipulation. He has managed to rid himself of a number of competitors and threats to himself here on the island, and by no small degree by using us to to his dirty work whenever possible. That we should believe ourselves safe from his machinations because he has not been caught lying to us, or has not carried out his repeated threats, is short sighted in my opinion. He will seek to remove us just as he has the rest... whether it is by direct confrontation, or by another one of his schemes, we will see. He has shown the capability to get what he wants.

Besides, I just don't trust "friends" who will not stand with me in combat....

Nim & Corb:

Ishirou was okay sharing with your group, he just didn't want to split with the others. The up to date map is on the shared site along with the treasure location.
You think you can get there in about 6 hours. It may take some time to dig it up so expect 2 days total to get there, possibly dig it up and get back.

You spend a quiet evening with a good meal with the other castaways ready for a good nights sleep. You discuss your next steps that night over a good stew and lizard meat cooked up by no other than Pezcock.

Mihai sighs as it seems that the duplicitous creature is the topic of conversation once more for the evening. Feeling that enough words had been said on that topic, Mihai instead spends his evening moving through the camp to check that none are ailing or need his aid. After that is done, he enjoys a meal - but sits on the outer of the group... communing more with the stars in the canopy above them than with the group.

Late in the evening, he rejoins the others as the fire burns low. His only words are chosen carefully "I follow the will of the Walker, and feel at comfort following a path already trodden than one of my own making... but I yet know caution. Many trails lead on from where we stand, and many may lead to darkness and despair... this I could bear to walk beside those with whom I already share a bond of blood. But there is one trail that I will not follow - that which has been laid out by the beast with wings, carefully tended to be free of undergrowth and well defined... for while the early passage may be easy, it's end is not in view - and I fear for where it may lead."

"Whatever path you choose, I ask only that you cover your ears to the words of the om dat dracului and blaze a trail without his counsel." and with that he gives a slight nod to all and retires to his cot.

Aedalis:

After several encounters with Grolik, you can deduce several things:
First, the creature is much more intelligent than any Chupa you have ever heard about. So much more that you are guessing it must be at or near normal humaniod intelligence. Was it spawned this way or made this way by the island, which has seemed to have some effect on a number of things?
Second, a normal Chupa couldn't control itself in this manner, it would have attacked you over and over again once it had your scent or you had entered it's territory. This could lead you to speculate on it's motives. You still have the sense of a proud animal...but you also see it starting to develope more of a...personality.

Tragershen:

Jask takes you aside after dinner, It is time my friend, I am going to teach you the Vudrani chants I learned. They are remarkably simple, but reaching the place to clear your mind is the hard part.
Also I am going to share this with you. It is called the Lothran. It is a small spark of Vudrani magic. Once in your lifetime you will be able to share or pass along the Lothran. Over the next few years it will slowly leave me and eventually I will only remember the chants and the magic will fade so keep it safe within you until you are ready to pass it on. Without the Lothran the same with exist for you. The chants will make you feel better and focus your mind but will not allow you to access the magic.
This is what it does...

Spark of the Vudrani
The chants of the Vudrani have focused your mind in a manner that allows you to cast under duress easier. You gain +2 to concentration checks to cast defensively. If you are damaged during spellcasting you can ignore the first 5 points of damage dealt for the DC of the concentration check.
Vudrani Spark (SU): The mystics of the Vudrani allow you to empower spells with their mystical power. Once per day you can Silent, Still, or Extend a spell as a full round action with no level increase. Only one of these effects can be applied per day to the spell. Another feat can be applied to a spell after this power is used.

Jask puts his hand to your head and you feel a sharp jolt followed by a peaceful feeling.
My adventuring days are nearing their end, you will need this in the days to come so I don't want to hear any refusals. It is a powerful ability, watch over it! Now practice Jask looks tired but at peace...

Corbius quietly discusses with the other members of the party when they are alone from the main group. Nim and I ahae discussed the issue of Ishirou's treasure. Nim thinks it will take us about 2 days round trip to recover the treasure. Normally I would be against such a side trip, but Ishirous is confident there may be magic in the treasure hoard that we can use against Iaena. As well, with the devil satisfied for the time being we may be able to accomplish the task in relative safety. I would like to head out in the morning as long as you all are in agreement?

My spell loadout will remain the same for the time being

Although the rest of the group might wonder why you are all leaving with Ishirou... :]

Nim remarks to Mihai, Very well spoken my friend. You know I share your feelings and stand with you.

To Corbius: Do we think it wise to leave the camp even more short handed? Is there any chance Ishirou will allow us to retrieve the treasure without him present?

Nim is of course in favor of going... but the logistics of who and how need to be worked out of course. :)

Jask:
Tragershen pays close attention as he teaches the chants. ”I will keep the teachings alive with me, and pass them on as appropriate. Barring disaster, I may make use of them for centuries to come.”

After Jask shares the spark and a peaceful feeling washes over Tragershen, he tells Jask ”When I set out, I was only seeking power as a means to revenge. I never expected I would instead find peace, and a friend. While your days adventuring may be coming to an end, I am hopeful that you will find peaceful days instead. I will still do whatever I can to see to that.” With that last part, he pats his waterproof pouch containing the Brine Demon’s ledger. ”Be watchful until we can find our way back to civilization. Don’t leave the campsite without others with you. I still believe we can do this, win our way back.”

In the aside, regarding Ishirou’s treasure.
”I agree that there is value in pursuing the possible treasure that he believes is there. Indeed, I am willing to take it a step further. Before we seek to go after Iaena, I am of the opinion that we should continue the overall exploration of the island. While I do not wish to extend the danger to the other castaways by extending our time here unnecessarily, I believe there is potentially much to be gained. The ruins we discovered before contained some powerful magics that have been useful to us, and will continue to be. We have found some clues as to the loss of our ship and what machinations landed us here; I believe we may yet learn more about it and better forewarn us.”

”Grolik’s mention of her ‘human walking bones’ was deeply concerning to me. Setting aside the debate as to whether Grolik can be trusted or not, if that is true, it sounds like she has some command of undead. Is it innate? Does she wield some power or artifact? And Grolik’s fear of being controlled by her; is it because he is reptilian or because he is a thinking creature? If it was compelling a sentient creature, then she may be able to turn one or more of us against the others. She is clearly not to be trifled with and if there are other caches to be uncovered on the island in ruins, wrecks or buried treasures that can aid us, I suggest we pursue them.”

”I also think we should eliminate the harpy. We are right to be concerned about Grolik turning on us, but he might not be the only one watching when we emerge from the Stone Mouth.”

As he speaks, you notice that Tragershen seems much calmer than you’ve seen him since any of you have met him, much more thoughtful and at peace.

Anton finds a moment to thank Aerys privately for her book, which he found really inspirational. He also unloads his trident and throwing dagger, leaving them behind in the room where he sleeps when he's in camp. When they're talking privately about Ishirou's treasure, Anton is carefully considering all angles, until Tragershen speaks. "You said everything that was on my mind, and then some. I have nothing to add."

Nim listens to Tragershen and Anton intently before responding, My concern with that much delay is whether we would be giving Ieana the same opportunity to amass resources or items to use against us. Or even that we are too late entirely to prevent whatever it is she is doing down there. She may accomplish her mission and be gone before we get the chance to confront her. I am sure she has a plan to get off of the island. It could be mundane, like a ship waiting off the coast for her signal. Or a pre-arranged time. Or even magical means of transport that she brought with her.

Ishirou's treasure is near where we think Iaena is... but the whole rest of the island and all the wrecks could take us days or weeks yet to search them all.

We are however only 414 XP from 4th level. ;)

Anton furrows his brow in concentration, looking into the distance. "Do we even have that much left to explore? We've traversed most of the island back and forth and then again, and searched all of the wrecks that we saw. But I agree that we shouldn't take too long. Perhaps just follow Ishirou's treasure map, and then explore the ruin with the "singing bird female"?

With a sinking heart, the optimistic halfling gradually realizes exactly what Grrrolik was saying.

I am in favor of gathering whatever treasure Ishorou has mentioned. Regardless of whether our foes-to-be on this island are Ieana or the Chupacabra, we would do well to better arm ourselves.

Spell prep done.

Before setting out, Aedalis placed his Ward upon Anton. As soon as Nim or one of others indicate that they are nearing the site of the treasure, Aedalis will cast Mage Armor on himself and Tilsini, as well as False Life and Unseen Servant.
