Bruendor rushed forward and pricked the drow who had shot him. The drow sucked in a breath adn began coughing on the dust that still filled the room. He backed off, and Bruendor felt a presence in his mind, freezing his muscles, though he tried to fight.
Kelendra, Calla, and Lefrik focused on the drow separated from the others. The drow took damage from arrow, axe, and morningstar, but continued to press the attack on Kelendra. Fortunately for the oracle, the strike missed.
Everyone in the cloud must make their DC15 Fort save or cough and choke, having only a move action for the round.
Bruendor owes me a DC16 will save or be paralyzed.

Will: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4 Oh-oh...
Bruendor's first impulse is to press his advantage against the retreating drow, but his muscles slow, then lock. His eyes cast about in horror as he wills his limbs to move, but they refuse to listen to him.
Well, that blows! :(
Anklebiter the Insane |
Provided Anklebiter can see at all what is going on in the dust cloud...
Anklebiter curses when he sees Bruendor suddenly freeze, and thrusts his green hand out at the Drow closest to the doughty Dwarf. "Sagittae magicae, omne errore vacuae, e manu meu evolete!" he chants, and launches four darts of force.
"Bruendor's in trouble!" the Goblin then yodels and, grimacing, makes his way into the dust...

Lefrik's axe did the job, neatly lopping the head from his foe and sending it bouncing to land atop a pile of scrolls and loose paper. Arrows and magic struck the dark elf attacking Bruendor, killing it as well. Kelendra called the cold of deep space onto the spellcaster, causing its skin to crack under the intense cold.
The drow spat something in a dark language, then moved to Bruendor's side. The clearing dust made what happened next all the worse for being clearly seen. The drow lined its morningstar up with Bruendor's head and hauled it back. The weapon swept forward and connected with a meaty thunk. Bruendor toppled, rigidly hitting the floor.
"You may have taken the library, but I will take your friend with me!"
Bruendor took 13 damage and need to make a DC23 Fort save or DIE!!

The dust cloud is now dissipated.
Bruendor Cavescouter |
Fort: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24
YESSS!!!
Bruendor collapsed from the strike, blood oozing from the wound down his face and into his left eye. He blacks out for a moment, but something - determination, hatred, or just plain dwarven stubbornness - keeps that blackness from claiming him. His eyes flutter again, and he looks up at the drow, hate gleaming through his eyes.

"NOOOOO~!" Anklebiter bellows, the amount of noise that issues from his body quite impressive for his size.
"DIE, you misbegotten demon-kisser, DIE! Exhalatio ignis ventique!"
The little Goblin runs forward with wild abandon, chanting as he goes, and when he finally skids to a halt atop the debris at the end of the hallway - he breathes out a cone of fire and wind, enveloping the lone Drow soldier!
Anklebiter moves to Y12 and casts Fire Sneeze. Note he'll aim the cone so as NOT to envelop Bruendor. Reflex save DC 15 to halve 2d6 ⇒ (1, 4) = 5 fire damage. Fail the Ref. save, and take a DC 12 Fort. save or be knocked prone.

Under a hail of arrows and a cloud of fire, the remaining drow falls to the ground. One arrow sticks out of her left eye as the body comes to rest facing Bruendor. The paralyzed dwarf and the dead drow stare blankly at each other as the scrolls and old parchment around them begins to catch fire.
Combat over, but now there's a new crisis. See? All goblins like to burn stuff!
Bruendor Cavescouter |
Whew. I also realized I shorted myself a Will save - I get one when the spell is cast, plus another for every round to shake it off, but I neglected to take one on my first round of paralysis. Fortunately for the narrative, my second roll was also a failure, so everything would have gone the way it did, but I do have a third roll I get to make.
Will save: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18
Yeah!
With a loud snarl, Bruendor fights to regain control of his limbs, and with a final struggle, his arms and legs begin to respond again. Snatching up his blade, Bruendor rolls atop the fallen drow and shoves his blade into the dark elf's throat. "Stay out of my mind, indy," he spits, his chin streaked with red. He pants several times before his hand goes to his head, startled to see how slick with blood it is. "I, uh, might need some healing," he says, slumping off the drow and clutching his head wound.
Anklebiter the Insane |
Goblins are, indeed, famous for loving fire. Another thing they are known for - in some circles, anyway - is their having feet which are disproportionate to the rest of their bodies. Anklebiter puts this particular Goblin feature to good use by jumping up and down on the starting fires, all around Bruendor and the dead Drow.
"This very unnatural for Goblin!" the little Wizard wheezes. "Dance around fire, not... on fire!"
Calumny "Calla" Tas'vere |
If you want to roll the CLW checks, I'll mark off the appropriate charges.
Calla looks around the room, trying to find some way to get to the roof.
"If there's nothing here, we're going to have to climb, after all. On the bright side, it should make it easier to defend once we're up there."
Perception: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (16) + 14 = 30
Anklebiter the Insane |
"Hang on, please," Anklebiter says. "Not just being greedy-greedy, might be more Drow..."
The little Wizard hurriedly frisks the dead spellcaster, looking for any magical items he can quickly pocket and/or use.
"One who hurt Bruendor... said... we took the library," Anklebiter reports. "Not sure it was true. Nice if it is. But probably more Drow yet. Who knows what else..."
Detect magic up to search for useful stuff.
DM Bigrin |
Scanning about, Calla does not see any means to access the roof. The drow must have gone up from the outside. Anklebiter rifles through the drow's pockets, skipping the armor and weapons and looking for anything immediately useful. He finds a potion of cure moderate wounds on each of the two drow soldiers, along with another two on the leader, plus a scroll and a wand. Also, a whip at the leader's side radiated magical properties. In the pile where the ambushing drow had hidden, Anklebiter detected magical auras that turned out to belong to another scroll and a book.
This is just the result of the quick search, and you never searched the drow outside.
Anklebiter the Insane |
Spellcraft wand 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (19) + 12 = 31

"Calla, Kelendra, take a look at these scrolls, please," Anklebiter says. "They're beyond me just now."
With the scavenging done - and the whip duly handed over to Calla - Anklebiter scuttles over to Bruendor and takes both his hands in one of his. The Goblin smiles. Not a sight for the fainthearted with all those teeth, if not for the genuine happiness that radiates from his features.
"Friend Bruendor, I am mighty happy to see you alive. I'm not sure any of the Elves have the power to bring back the dead, or that you'd even respond to the call of an Elf-god, and where are we going to find a Dwarf-priest all the way out here, I ask you? Better, much better, that you survive."
Anklebiter the Insane |
Any spells in the book? ;)
"Wand is good!" Anklebiter says. "Battle-wand! Shoots magic missiles! Not many left, but still."

"So long as it's not a dark god, I don't judge, AB," Bruendor says, his eyes clearing as the healing magics work. "Doesn't really matter if it's Old Deadeye or the Savored Sting doing the job to me. I'd prefer Torag, but that's just several decades of living in Janderhoff talking." He slowly finds his feet, and pokes around. "If we're going to race to the top, we're going to have to find a way to get there quick. The slippers would be a good start. Alternatively, I can climb, but it will take me awhile, and I don't relish the thought of getting shot by drow bolts all the way up."
Our orders were to hold it, right?
Calumny "Calla" Tas'vere |
"I have two invisibility spells still. Perhaps using those and the slippers, three of us can check the roof... Then, if its clear, we should begin to fortify the doors so no more drow can get in -- it certainly sounded like they were signaling for aid," Calla says as she wraps the new whip onto a hanger on her belt.
Anklebiter the Insane |
"I have one spell that will keep arrows from hurting - so long as they're not magical, and it's not unlimited," Anklebiter offers.
Calumny "Calla" Tas'vere |
"And that will do us a lot of good once we get up to the roof, but I don't think it will do much to get us up there safely," Calla snarks. "You and Bruendor can climb, right? I suggest we make you both invisible and you can make your way up. Then one of us uses the slippers to follow. If it's safe, great. If it's not, we can occupy whatever's up there while Anklebiter or Kelendra make their way up, or wait below for us to mop up any drow."
I think it'll be easiest not to have AB and Kel come up, but if there are several drow up there, we may need their help. Maybe we can sneak up and have Brue quietly and invisibly let down a rope if there are drow? Hopefully the roof will in fact be empty and we can figure out if we want to use that to hold the library or go back in and try to fortify the doors...
Anklebiter the Insane |
"We should not split up," Anklebiter says, shaking his ears. "If nothing else, there may be another spellcaster up there. Or lots of troops. Fortify and barricade the doors first, yes, but then we need to go up as a team."
Kelendra Shae |
"Should we worry about the roof? The drow can float up there as needed and not risk a fall, we may find ourselves more vulnerable up there and exposed to ranged attacks from floating opponents. Maybe we barricade ourselves in here and wait for the army to arrive?" Kel fidgets nervously as she looks at the blood staining Bruendor's face. "I'm afraid what would happen if one of us went unresponsive on the roof and fell to the ground where we couldn't help them quickly."
another successful expo completed, thanks for tolerating my absence
Calumny "Calla" Tas'vere |
"I don't like the idea of splitting up either, but if there are drow up there, we don't have time to wait for us to fortify the library! Why not have a picnic lunch while we're at it?" Calla argues, practically spitting out the last sentence.
There's no good way I see to get all of us up there quickly. I think my plan gives us the best opportunity. Brue should be able to get up fairly safely if invisible and let down a rope and then Lefrik can climb invisibly and Calla can follow in the slippers, since they tend to be our other main combatants. AB and Kel can come up via the rope if needed in the first round/two of combat, which should keep the drow from picking them off but also get them up there ASAP in case there's trouble.
Lefrik Olegson |
"If this were an Ulfen raid coming for us, I'd suggest we hole up and fire through openings and hope they didn't bring fire while we shot arrows at them with as much cover as possible and hope to hell they didn't just torch the place. If we could create a ruse where it seemed like more of us were here to discourage them, the better. Drow tactics are different though so I can't say."
Kelendra Shae |
Kel enchants a few trinkets with light to provide Bruendor extra illumination as he scours the ceiling for trapdoors in the library.
assuming we go with the 'spider climbing to look for trapdoors to the roof' plan
Calumny "Calla" Tas'vere |
Let's have Bruendor check the ceiling using the slippers. After that, we have to find a way to check the roof. If no one else does, Calla will take the slippers and go do it herself. If it's clear, we're going to hold up in the library and trap the doors.
