Hey everyone,
Looking to start a Pathfinder 1e game, but first wanted to gauge interest.
As is now becoming usual for me, this will be a fast-start, no-nonsense game with a strong old-school feel: player skill matters, choices have weight, and the world doesn’t scale to you. It will start as a one-shot, but who knows what happens next?
System & Rules:
- Pathfinder 1e
- Core Rulebook only (CRB means Core) – no exceptions
- 20-point buy
- Standard starting gold
- No crafting feats or item crafting
- No Variant Multiclassing (VMC)
- No fractional BAB/saves
- Etc.
- We'll start at Level 1
Style & Expectations
- Old-school inspired: risk, consequences, and resource management matter
- Exploration and adventure focused, with meaningful danger, player agency and decisions
- Combat is not always balanced - retreat is a valid option
- Encumbrance is tracked
- Ammo, rations, light sources matter
- Marching order matters
- Timekeeping matters
- Backstories: short and grounded (this is not a novel-writing exercise). Two lines maximum. Three if you need to go crazy. Your character story is what will happen in-game, if he/she survives (so no point in getting too self-involved with your background). Which takes me to the next point
- Character death is a real possibility
Skills & Rolling
- PF has skills, but don’t play your sheet instead of the game.
- Describe what you do first - I’ll call for rolls when needed, or ask you to roll. No preemptive “I roll X” every post, please.
Pace and other stuff
- I am not planning on moving at breakneck speed, but I am looking for reliable, consistent posters. PbP only works with steady momentum - if you can only post once a week, this probably isn’t the game for you.
- Just as important: posts should move things forward. Contribute to decisions, actions, and direction - don't wait passively for others to decide everything. If needed, I will push for decisions to keep things moving. Heck I will even nominate a 'Caller' round robin if we feel we need it ;)

Hi GM! I think old school-style games can be fun, though the "core only" is a bit detrimental. I think there has been enough quality of life introduced in other books that maybe we shouldn't ignore.
If I may suggest, limiting the list of races and classes to the one in the core book would already be a good way to make it feel more old school; maybe complementing it with avoiding certain feats and archetypes that modify these so much that they don't feel classic anymore.
Again, just my two-cents. I think it may be a refreshing thing to run considering all other adventures going on right now! :) I still have fond memories of my ranger.

Interested.
Character class would be sorcerer with the light cantrip. Will figure out rest later.
Background: He tried to enroll at the local (or closest) magic school and could not pass the basics (studying and preparing spells from a spellbook). He now works back at home at his parents' business (whatever works for campaign: a farm or a general store) or works for an NPC's business.

Duly noted, and I do understand your perspective Lapyd, but I think it will be refreshing to play Core for a change, and discover if those quality of life items were ever really needed. We might be surprised.
And if we ever come to the conclusion they were, maybe we will introduce them along the way, who knows?
For now I am not budging from Core only ;)
