Could somebody help me with Runes? PF2E

Rules Discussion

Recently I feel confused with some property Runes.

I know if character has +2 potency rune and weapon
-> make it to +2 weapon, I could add 2 property runes like
ex) +2 Corrosive Frost Weapon.

I saw some feats or abilities grant characters the effects of property rune
like Ghost Hunter(gives Ghost Touch) or Kindle Inner Flames(gives Flaming).
So like... if I have +2 Corrosive Frost Weapon and
there are some effects give character the rune effects,
could characters get the effects of rune? or not?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

It is unfortunately unclear in quite a few cases, and we have contradicting information.

The Champion feature Blessed Armament says "and you grant the armament a property rune of your choice from the following list: fearsome, ghost touch, returning, shifting, or vitalizing.", and it had to be clarified in errata that this does not count against the rune limit of the Champion's weapon...but the Errata also says "Unlike many similar abilities, it can be used even if the weapon already has its maximum number of property runes."

So Kindle Inner Flame, which grants the flaming rune and doesn't specify it doesn't take up a slot probably does take up a slot, which means it'd suppress one of your two runes (corrosive or frost). But it's wording is exactly the same as the Champion feature, so it's....unsure.

Same with "gains the effect of". I generally run it as it not taking up a rune slot, but the feat Harbinger's Armament has that same wording and also feels the need to specify this doesn't take up a slot. Is that just reminder text, or should we assume feats that don't have that wording do, in fact, take up a slot?

The whole situation is a bit messy, you'll need to work it out with your GM I'm afraid.

Yes. You can have the same number of property runes as you have potency rune level (the +n rune). So a +2 weapon can have two property runes. Striking runes, since they are fundamental runes, don't count against that limit.

I agree with TheFinish, there are a lot of cases to consider. Some abilities go one way and others go the other way.

Magus: Runic Impression for example, very clearly specifies that it does not allow exceeding that normal limit of property rune effects and specifies how to handle it if it is cast on a weapon that would cause that state.

Champion: Blessed Armament doesn't specify either of those things.

The Thrower's Bandolier suppresses all existing property runes on an affected weapon regardless of if it would exceed the maximum allowed or not.

For the abilities that don't specify, there really isn't a default given. It is going to be up to the GM and the table to decide how to handle that interaction.

Yup, all you can do is try to read the text after priming yourself for that binary split.

Is the ability trying to add the benefit / effect of a rune, which would not interact with the rune limit,
or is the ability trying to add a free/temp rune?

And because of "Paizo balance" there are a whole lot of "free rune" trash abilities, and the "unique buff that references a rune" are a lot less common.
