Bad Touch Cleric

Advice

I am looking to build a level 17 Cleric. FA rules are in effect. My previous character just died. I would like bring to life a character that walks up to the enemy and can cripple enemies in close range. I like being in the thick of things so I was thinking maybe archetyping into a class that gives heavy armor and would be able to use a Shield and being able to use Shield Block will probably give me some decent survivability.

I am hoping for a Domain that can provide something that shines in melee, a nice debuffing Focus Power would be nice, but I'm not sure what. Also investing in Cast Down for 2 action Harm in melee range would be nice, perhaps my third action could be used on a single action Focus Point I'm not sure. Would this character be a Warpriest or a cloistered? I would prefer cloistered for the higher spell DC at this level.

Please any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would recommend Warpriest. There is also Battle Harbinger class archetype, but it changes your Divine Font to cast Bane and Bless instead of Heal or Harm - that would make Cast Down less appealing, but it would make close range debuffing easier.

Warpriest gives you Shield Block right from the start. No need for additional feat for that. Warpriest also automatically gets medium armor proficiency. You will probably want the Sentinel archetype for the heavy armor. It gives better proficiency than the Armor Proficiency general feat.

Domains and focus spells is a lot harder to judge. There are a lot of them. I'm seeing Savor the Sting as being what you are looking for: one action to cast, touch range, theme of crippling your enemy. There is also Athletic Rush that will help you to get into position in the first place as well as giving bonuses to grapple and trip checks.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

If you're starting at 17th level, a Cloistered Cleric and a Warpriest will have the same AC, so unless you go for Warpriest's Armor, a Cloistered Cleric may be more attractive for their better spell DC, and you could always use a few general feats to get Armor Proficiency, Canny Acumen, and Shield Block for the improved defenses. Your best bet for domains with debilitating touch spells are Decay, Pain, Soul, and Tyranny; Hadregash and Xsistaid have multiple of these domains.

For feats, you'll have plenty of options to beef up your harm spells, like Harming Hands, Cast Down as you mention, and Void Siphon. Sap Life will also give you a measure of additional survivability as you cast harm. Savor the sting and touch of obedience are both single-action spells (and both are available on Hadregash), so you could weave them into your Cast Down + harm turn, and I'd also recommend boosting either Strength or Charisma as your fourth score so that you can debuff enemies even further via Athletics checks, Bon Mot, and/or Demoralize (and if you go for heavy armor proficiency, you can do both). With this kind of setup, you'll have room for lots more other feats too, and will generally be extremely good at debuffing enemies in melee, with plenty of single-action options to round out your turns.
