Once you have selected your cursed weakness for the warrior of legend archetype can you retrain or change that cursed weakness?

"Your GM determines whether you can get proper training or whether something can be retrained at all."

Finding someone who can retrain your fated doom is going to be a doozy. That sounds like doing something for a Norn, an off-the-books favor from a powerful psychopomp, or some other similar thing.

The quote you provided is that from the standard rules somewhere? I'm not familiar with the actual rulebook and don't have any to read through.

Archives of Nethys has got you covered. I just searched up retraining, and it was the first result. Hope that helps!

The quote is directly from the general Retraining rules in Player Core. The Retraining guidelines in GM Core are also useful to read for making the decision for the character (especially the guidelines for allowing Extreme Retraining).

So before I made this post I tried asking chat gpt to search the rules to see if you can retrain that weakness. It's reply was no because it's like choosing a barbarian instinct or a sorcerer bloodline. The conclusion was the only option would be to retcon the decision with the gm. Does that sound right?

You should always try to use real intelligence instead of relying on the artificial substitute.

Retraining the Cursed Weakness from Warrior of Legend would be retraining a decision made as part of your level 1 class abilities. Being a class ability from a class archetype doesn't really change that. So the analogy of barbarian instinct or sorcerer bloodline is rather accurate.

Retcon isn't necessarily the only way. The Extreme Retraining that I mentioned earlier does allow for that too. Both are going to involve getting agreement from your GM and the other players at the table.

ChatGPT is always going to be pretty useless for this sort of thing; I'd use the Archives of Nethys search instead. Barbarian instincts seem plenty reasonable to retrain normally? It's definitely on a similar level to a Sorcerer's bloodline, but that falls under the rules for Extreme Retraining. (Basically, a retcon is sometimes the easiest, but you can come up with in-world was to justify retraining.)

Ah, the RL equivalent of blasting with a cantrip ;)

Back on topic, this sounds like an excellent story hook for a home game. "It is said the witches of Mount Examplar will remove your doom. For a price - you must take on one of their dooms in exchange for your own. Fortunately, the mountain is quite close - just on the other side of dead adventurer swamp..."

As others mentioned: retraining rules are not hard and fast rules. They're very subject to working with the GM and even the other players.

"Normal" retraining doesn't normally allow this, but retraining isn't limited too "normal" retraining. Get a powerful enough entity involved and suddenly everything is on the table. They just might not be the "benevolent help you out because it's the nice thing to do" type...

And now you've got a plot hook!

As a GM myself if a player wanted to retrain this because it wasn't working out story wise or such, I'd work with them. It certainly wouldn't be a case of "spend a week of downtime with a trainer", but I want players to enjoy their characters so I'd try to find a solution. Then I'd turn it into a side quest.
