Interplanar Pen-Pals

The Party is traveling across planes frequently and one character would like to keep in contact with an NPC. Sending and similar magic that I've seen all appear limited to the planet.

Is there an item that allows for sending mail across the planes to a consistent location, write in one book and it appears in the other, et cetera? If not, what do you think a reasonable item level or cost would be for that? Postal service in Golarion has generally been handwaved, but there are base line items to work from.

I honestly can't think of a good reason why Magic Mailbox works between planets in different galaxies (they are still on the material plane, after all), but don't work if one of them is in the ethereal plane instead.

So my 'easiest fix' recommendation is to houserule away the 'same plane only' restrictions on the existing items.

Alternatively, homebrewing an item that will fit the job more precisely (text transfer only instead of being able to send items with Magic Mailbox) would be easy enough. Parchment of Direct Message is a level 3 item and Magic Mailbox is a Rank 4 spell (level 7). So those would be the item level bounds for text transfer across planes - it wouldn't be less than level 3 since it is more powerful than the existing Parchment item that works at a 10 mile range, and it wouldn't be higher than level 7 since it is less powerful than Magic Mailbox transferring items.

So for your interplanar penpal item, I would probably have it work like the Parchment of Direct Message upgraded to level 4 or 5 to let it work across planes.

Thanks for this. I will look at those. The characters are 15th level, so telling them that this will be a Custom level 7 magic item and then they have to go through the steps of finding someone to make it, or reconnecting with the contact that does custom formulae would be an easy narrative element.
