Contradictory mind control - what happens?

Rules Discussion

So one of our party members was mind controlled by an enemy. Said party member uses a living weapon that will mind control anyone not living up to her sense of justice. Of course, once they attacked another party member, the weapon took offense and tried to take control.

So... how does that work? We weren't able to find any rules about contradictory mind control in 2E. The GM ruled that the new one overrode the old one for simplicity, but I'm wondering if there's any actual rules that are relevant.

4 people marked this as a favorite.

If there really isn't any guidance on this already I would run the sword's attempt to take control as a counteract check

I agree with Baarogue. This is an edge case that needed to be ruled by GM.

Anyway, I would rule that the second control attempt vs the highest will DC between 1st controller and controlled character or only the 1st controller if the target is willing.

Could also be the spell DC of 1st controlled is controlling using a spell.

Rules don't cover every cases. That's a case where the GM has to come up with his own ruling.

Polymorph effects can't be combined and the game uses a counteract check when you get affected by a second Polymorph effect. So I agree with Baarogue, it's certainly the best way to handle a direct incompatibility between 2 effects.

There are features which has such behavior so following those isnt a bad idea. Hijack Undead

Otherwise it would also be relevant to use a counteract check.

I somehow forgot Counteract was a thing despite seeing a meme about it very recently. Thanks y'all!
