Class for a Battlezoo Gargoyle in gothic setting (Level 1, free archetype)

Advice

So I joined the forum to post this as I've been going back and forth and can't decide what to play! I've been playing PF2E as a Barbarian for a year or so, and flavour/vibes are what I key in on for character creation

I'm joining a homebrew gothic setting, where the party are a group of investigators. We have an inventor, a forensic investigator and a Vindicator ranger. I'd like to play the Gargoyle from Battlezoo but not sure which class we need?

I imagine something beefy and I see this Gargoyle as a protector of a parish or church; a watcher who helps the community, fighting monsters and solving crimes. I'm trying to pick something with a nice flavour and I contribute out of combat too. Thinking the character is religious and kind of a hard boiled detective or monster slayer in a way, bit on a local level.Certianly inspired by Hellboy and Abrams of Deadlock, wanted to take advantage of guns in the setting but that may not work.

(I couldn't think of a good Thaumaturge flavour tie in, as usually I love Tarot or saints if anyone can think or anything, so another Ranger, Champion, Fighter? Don’t think the party needs a Gunslinger unless melee). Deep down I think ranger would work best as I'm, worried Champion and Fighter would leave me little to do outside of combat, but happy to be proven wrong.

I do like the Stone Brawler archetype: https://2e.aonprd.com/Archetypes.aspx?ID=209 but not sure if it’s that useful and would love any mechanics, archyype or flavour suggestions!

You could take a look at the Avenger rogue, which might be a combination of religious flavor, skills and combat abilities that would match your ideas quite good.
With strength as an key attribute choice you could be beefy and strong, focus on grapple/trip, bringing your targets down in word and deed.

Guns are mechanically difficult for most classes but gunslinger, the reload-feats are what makes it work - i tried quite hard to fit one into my Thaumaturge build for Outlaws of Alkenstar, but was not content with the overly strained action economy.

So I like Avenger and have tried building the character as one but don’t know of that’s what my party needs as I’d be a rogue and the only real frontliner.

Same issue with the gunslinger I feel though I underatand they can function in melee (I'd also love soemthing to do with one outside of combat)

Swashbuckler could be an option, especially the Braggart or Gymnast. Gives you a lot of ways to be spooky or overwhelming, with abilities to draw attacks to yourself and to make you very hard to put down. You can even get tekko-kagi for parrying claws.

I'd vote for swashy as well if your goal is to be tanky. They have a lot of staying power, and making your guy more athletics and brawling focused should be pretty easy. Are there any particular ancestry feats you're thinking about using? Finding a cool, thematic feat or two might be able to help narrow down your choices.

I've got Gargoyles, but haven't read it yet, so I'm not sure what they get feat-wise.

Being a sole frontliner is not a good idea as a Rogue - or about anybody, but especially a Rogue.
The Vindicator is ranged and the Inventor does not have a companion?

Maybe Exemplar would be another option, it is very versatile and can be really tanky on its own. Still, nobody to flank is hard.
A Swashbuckler, as suggested, could also work without a flanking partner. Has some skills as well.
Or you try the Avenger and go for a grappling build to get targets off-guard for yourself and your ranged compatriots.

Thanks for the suggestions folks, unfortunately I'm also playing a grappling build wrestler barb in another game so wouldn't mind something differing to that. I'm more than happy to try out weapons on the character, for instance warpicks, hammers, greatswords and chains.

On the swashbuckler front, Braggart could be interesting, anone got any suggestions on ho to flavour it?

If you're familiar with the gargoyles cartoon, basically any time Goliath gives a speech and then goes white-eyed rage mode would fit the braggart intimidation style, with a hint of Brookyln for the brasher moments.
