Swashbuckler dedication Panache question

Rules Discussion

The 2nd level swashbuckler dedication feat gives the ability to gain Panache. From what I can see a character gains no benefit from having Panache until they take another feat from the dedication at a higher level. Is my understanding of the rules correct?

As of current Remaster rules, yes.

Previously, Panache on its own gave a +1 bonus to Tumble Through or the specific action used by the Swashbuckler style, and gave a +5 bonus to speed.

That has now been buffed to be a +1 bonus to any skill checks with the Bravado trait and the same +5 bonus to speed - but it has also been moved to a different class feature (Stylish Combatant) which isn't given in the Swashbuckler Dedication.

And to anticipate the next question: yes, it looks like that is deliberate - not something that is going to be changed with errata.

The legacy archetype feat Swashbuckler's Speed is written with the assumption that Panache is already giving the +5 bonus to speed. It only gives the +5 bonus to speed when you don't have Panache and increases the speed bonus to +10 when you do.

The Remastered version of the feat Swashbuckler's Speed gives the +5 bonus to speed when you don't have panache in addition to giving the +5 bonus to speed when you don't have panache and increasing the bonus to +10 when you do.

So the writer who reworked the Swashbuckler Archetype did so with the understanding that Panache by itself does not give an increase in speed.

It's basically a very expensive way to get One for All - which may still be worth it.
