Lvl 13 Kitsune feat "Larger than Life"

Pathfinder Second Edition General Discussion

So the feat just says you take the form of a large or huge creature, but there are no other description on how it operates. In the prerequisite feat "shifting faces" its states you changing forms is not an illusion but a transmutation. Is the purpose of this feat changing huge/large just to get +1 on intimidation then changing back or is there more to it.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

In what book is this feat? cant find it anywhere.

my guess is that since Shifting faces is to impersonate someone of the same size, larger then life is a follow up that lets you take the form of someone large or huge instead, something you cant do otherwise.

but since i cant read the feat atm, thats just a guess on what the prereq do.

It is in Tian Xia Character Guide.

Looking on Pathbuilder, that is pretty much all it does.

Change Shape can take the form of a Large or Huge size creature. In addition to the size change, you get a +1 circumstance bonus to intimidation checks.

I don't think the size change does much other than maybe increasing your reach. I haven't played Large creatures yet, so I haven't read the rules on that very much.

Yep, pretty much this: it basically goes from "The target can appear as any creature of the same size, even a specific individual." to 'The target can appear as any creature up to Huge size, even a specific individual.'

You just change your space [10'x10 or 15'x15'] and reach [10' or 15'].

One of the GM's i play with a mentioned that unless stated in the thing that changes your size you don't gain reach.

They were like being able to become large/huge at no penalties, and also gain reach for that size is too strong.

Correct, your reach does not change unless specified. This fear is not to make you a stronger fighter necessarily, but to give you more flexibility what you can shapeshift into.

Reach or not would 100% depend on what creature you were changing into. If you turn into a Forest Troll you would gain 10' reach. If you turn into a War Horse, you wouldn't.

It's the other way: Unless a feature specifically takes reach away, you get it as you get it at base with the size. Nothing in the 'Size, Space, and Reach' is optional. [Player Core pg. 421] There is a reason the Large PC section Howl of the Wild states "Large PCs do not automatically gain additional reach", as otherwise they would "automatically gain" it.

One thing to ask your DM: since he rules that it MUST mention reach, what reach an eidolon with Miniaturize have: it just says "your eidolon can reduce its size to Tiny", so by his logic, it'd retain its 5' reach.

Shifting Faces uses Illusory Disguise as a basis, so it's require you to "appear as another creature of the same body shape". So it'd only be a Long Reach if you used the base Change Shape into the pest form stat fox then applied Larger than Life to that.

Personally, I don't find it a compelling argument to say that a table in the Movement section of the core rules listing "typical reach" has much to do with an feat that takes your Shifting Faces (when you shapechange, gain Illusory Disguise for 1 hour--a spell which under no normal circumstance would affect your reach) and grants you the ability to take the form of a Large or Huge creature.

Then again, Shifting Faces still requires a remaster errata, since there is no longer a transmutation school, and Larger Than Life technically only calls out your basic Change Shape ability. Even so, Change Shape does not normally change your statistics, and this feat does not mention your Reach even though it does mention your Space changing with your Size.

Incidentally, regarding the example of Miniaturize, while that doesn't mention Reach, the counterpart feats Hulking Size and Towering Size both do, suggesting that Miniaturize may not be intended to reduce your eidolon's reach while the others are intended to increase it.

... But this isn't an argument I want to get stuck in. By all means, play to your preference and have all the more fun doing so.

I'd argue that "typical reach" is completely and 100% irrelevant as you are taking the form of another creature: as such, you just have to look at said creature to see what its reach is.

Shifting Faces says "When you Change Shape" too. More than one ability can modify Change Shape at the same time.
