Starvation and Thirst with Constitution -1

Rules Discussion

There's a player character in my campaign with Constitution -1. That means if he goes 0 days without food or water, he starts taking damage. Is it supposed to be a minimum of one day before the damage starts?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I think the intent is a Constituion -1 character would start taking damage immediately if deprived of food/water.

Like if you're in a desert and you have 3 people: one of them has Constitution -1, the other Constitution +0 and the other Constitution +1.

At the end of the first day, they finish all their rations and water.

At some point during the 2nd day (at GM discretion), the Constituion -1 Character would start taking 1d4 damage per hour due to lack of water. At the end of the first day, if they're still alive and haven't eaten, they take 1 point of damage from hunger.

The Constitution +0 character can hold out throughout all of the 2nd day, and they would start taking damage at some point during the 3rd day.

The Constitution +1 Character can hold out all of the 2nd and 3rd days, and starts taking damage at some point during the 4th.

It is weird because 0 days can be anywhere from 1 hour to 23 hours. I'd probably rule a Constituion -1 character starts taking damage after 8 hours of activity without water/food, but this is one that's definitely GM fiat.

I imagine it is, since the rules weren't written with the assumption that you will have a negative Constitution score (even if it is possible to do). Otherwise a character with such a penalty would suffer that damage constantly.

Yeah.

There's a spell for that.

And a curse, though that one also always gives you at least a day before you start taking damage.

Not that I'm recommending dumping CON. Just that by itself, doing so shouldn't cause damage.

I don't think you need a minimum, just that the -1 Con character has to eat and drink daily while the Con 0 character can skip a day more easily.

Though it wouldn't really be the end of the world to change it either.
