Are Pahtras Small Now?

Playtest General Discussion

The illustration for the pahtra ancestry is not a Medium humanoid. If it were the same or even close to the same height as an adult human, its head and hands would be grotesquely oversized. Is it supposed to represent a child?

I thought the same thing, but the stats say medium. I chalk it up to inappropriate artwork.

Sand Roamer Heritage is size Small instead of Medium.

Minor correction on English language: I think the word you are wanting is 'inaccurate'. Inappropriate artwork has a very different meaning than inaccurate artwork.

The artwork makes it look size tiny.

Yea, Inappropriate probably isn't the best word. 'Unintentionally misleading' better conveys my thoughts. My first though was "crappy" but the artwork is well done, except that it makes the pahtra look quite small.

This is an ancestry like barathu that has size options. Barathu can be medium or large and patra can be medium or small depending on options selected.

Guys, the artwork is for the Sand Roamer Pahtra, who are Small. Other Pahtra are medium sized. They likely used that artwork for the image because everyone went ga-ga for the image when it came out at Paizocon.

This is a playtest forum. "You're using the wrong image to sell people on the Pahtra" is valid feedback.

Fair enough. I wasn't saying it wasn't. I'm just telling people why that pahtra is small sized and likely why Paizo used the image. If it's a swing and a miss, it's a swing and a miss. Doesn't invalidate the context.

I vote that the little one keeps their spot. From the measurements on the printed page, I'm pretty sure that the Sand Roamer Pahtra is taller than the Skittermander and about the same height as the Ysoki on their respective front pages.

There's taller Pahtras illustrated on pages 80 and 98, while their Species write-up makes it clear that only one Heritage is Small. Given that most PF2 Ancestries have 4+ pieces of art in their published writeups, I wouldn't worry.

I agree that the art can and should stay in the book, it's adorable, but for sure a different one should be used for the main Pahtra artwork in future releases. Small Pahtras are the exception, not the rule, so a more represantative depiction would be better there. I know I had a double-take when I saw Medium listed next to that little scrimbly. I did figure it was a case of smallifying Heritage and skipped ahead to find I was right but a) in a playtest book especially a typo/misprint like that is not at all unexpected, looking at Barathu land speed here, and b) someone new to the system wouldn't immediately know where to find the answer. Yeah if they keep reading they'll see Sand Roamer but overall that's just not a very streamlined experience. Art in an RPG book should help clarify, not confuse.
