If a Commander is granting extra actions to an ally who is supposed to be participating in a one on one duel or arena combat without support (such as magic), is that cheating? Or is it perceived in-world as just another person shouting support/coaching advice from the sidelines?

Seems like every gladiator would benefit greatly from having such a coach in their corner, without obviously breaking any participation rules.

As a GM, when I set the terms of a duel (or a tournament) up, I include rules on things like that.

For the in-game tournaments I have run, I would consider it against the spirit of the rules (just as spellcasting by spectators would be), but whether it is against the letter of the rules depends.

Whether you would get *caught* depends on a lot of things, but I generally allow a Society check to recognize class features (if actively perceiving -- generally not passively).

Yeah, you are talking about a homebrew scenario. A private duel challenge set up by the GM.

It is entirely up to the GM to adjudicate what is going to be considered a violation of the rules of the duel.

Is it homebrew though? We have an entire adventure path about a martial arts fighting tournament.

Do you believe a whole arena of people of 10+ level people wouldn't notice there's someone with a banner helping in the sidelines?

I'm sure they'll notice, but would they care? In an arena setting, for example, there are probably numerous fans with banners and face paint and the like shouting advice.

Well it's a morale effect not a magical one. Unless the tournament demands that everyone stays quiet I don't see this as cheating.

A boxing fight is a duel, but the coaches are constantly giving instructions and moralizing shouts to the fighters.

Well, a bunch of the tactics require being affected by the banner, so that means being close by. But even the ones that don’t have the requirement that the player can see or hear the commander. For some kind of tourneys, that could work, but if it is inside a loud arena with lots of spectators a GM is well within the spirit of the adventure to make it involve a check of some kind that possibly the rest of the party can be involved in too, since solo combats tend to be snore fests for other players.
