For a tank at higher levels, AC, intimidate, or combat maneuvers?

Advice

Hello.

For an adventure path (Hell's Vengeance), the spot for main frontliner is to be filled. Yet for the sake of it, i can't decide on one of three options.

1) light/unarmored swashbuckler multiclass.
2) reach dirty trick fighter build
3) Intimidate build around NL. Capture those rebels. Involving among Enforcer feat and 1 lvl in Thug rogue and 2 lvls cavalier of cockatrice order, for standard intimidate check.

At the higher levels, what has most chances of success, in your experiences?

What is the class of your party members?

Those would be a bloodrager, a cleric, and an Omdura.

the bloodrager or the cleric can't take the main frontliner duties?

Also, you have no decent arcane caster.

The bloodrager might well, but the previous main melee had left.

True on that missing arcane aspect.

As the Omdura in that game:

The cleric is not specced for melee combat, the Omdura is actually decent at it, the Bloodrager hits like a truck but doesnt really "tank" hells vengeance is just like... a really hard first book. A Manticore and a sneak attacking ranger are no joke at level 3, what is screwing us vs the manticore is a lack of abilities of dealing with fliers, other then trying to command them into coming closer.

Some type of ranged Magus would fit excellently, another variation you could go for as the unarmed version is a dip in swashbuckler and the rest in skald/bard.

Yikes....manticores are not pleasant, indeed.

I know, they are nearly a match for 10th level clerics.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Sounds like you already have two other frontliners. What I don’t see is any scouting/stealth, ranged combat or offensive caster. A warlock Vigilante might be able to cover all three, but not much else could. You might have to choose 2 of the 3 weaknesses.

For ranged and stealth an Urban Ranger might be good. Favored Enemy Human and God Outsider would probably work very well in this adventure path. Archery combat style would take care of the ranged combat. You take power attack and quick draw and go for a switch hitter. A human ranger is also going to have lots of skills including knowledge local and your favored enemy bonus will boost them further.

My 2 cp:

The bloodrager can probably cover intimidation with minimal investment.

For the "light/unarmored swashbuckler multiclass and reach dirty trick fighter build" concepts, the cad archetype with a whip can probably handle both. Dips in brawler (for Brawler's Cunning; possibly snakebite striker for the +1d6 Sneak Attack) and mysterious avenger swashbuckler (for whip proficiency and ability to use a whip with swashbuckler finesse and other swashbuckler features) might be worthwhile.
