Seven Dooms for Sandpoint

Some of the published NPCs have just enough Flavor background to whet the appetite of DMs using Sandpoint and her hinterlands. Is any more background given for some of the old NPCs that we have used in our previous games? Can you mention a couple who *do* have a little more design?

For example, in two of my campaigns, different players running different PCs have both been really interested in furthering a rapport with Das Korvut, a pretty grumpy, ornery NPC. But they liked his dogs. I've roleplayed some dialogue with Das Korvut here and there over the years, mostly downtime and such, but a little more background on such an NPC could really help.

For me, I've always wanted a bit more on the Four Families -- names and backgrounds of the *other* Deverin or Scarnetti scions. Also, I had wanted more detail on Jubrayl Vhiski but alas, I've developed him so thoroughly that by now, if Seven Dooms for Sandpoint has a huge amount of design for him I'll just have to transfer that to, like, a younger brother, best friend, or something. But that's always very welcome! (It's even worse for my 'Master Sorn' at The House of Blue Stones -- I desperately needed him to become a Cleric/Monk of Aroden for a PC who really was into Aroden so, you know, The House of Blue Stones is dedicated to Aroden. What can you do?

Nonetheless, I'm really excited to hear if any of the old dogs of Sandpoint that we've been roleplaying over the years are getting any new tricks.

THANKS!

The Sandpoint Splatbook has a lot of this.

It is, however, about 15 years of in-game time out of date.

1: I'd prefer if folks retired the term "splatbook." It feels insulting and diminishing to the work we put in on these things... the word "splat" does not carry positive vibes or themes. I'd prefer something like "lorebook" or "expansion" or just "book."

2: While the contents of "Sandpoint: Light of the Lost Coast" present the town as it exists in between Rise of the Runelords and Jade Regent, the majority of it will be EXCEPTIONALLY helpful in running "Seven Dooms for Sandpoint."

"Seven Dooms for Sandpoint" includes all the information you need to run the adventure, of course, but if you want to let your PCs explore Sandpoint beyond the edges of those encounters and plots, or if you want to have additional support material for the many NPCs in town, it will be very very very helpful to have. The Adventure Path is set 17 years after "Burnt Offerings" and does include a lot of information that updates the current state of political affairs in Sandpoint, as well as its active factions and adjustments to which NPCs are and aren't in town, but there wasn't room to do a full detailed gazetteer of the town in this product.

Furthermore, the basic plot of "Seven Dooms for Sanpdoint" builds directly on many of the adventure hooks and plots talked about in the Sandpoint lorebook, to the extent that if you've read through that book, a lot of the surprises and plot points for the Adventure Path itself will be spoiled to some extent. That said, there's a few of the plot hooks in the Sanpdoint book that have been deliberately changed to mesh better with the story of Seven Dooms, so it isn't 100% accurate.

That said, to speak to the original poster, yes there are some established NPCs who get expanded lore and new stuff, as well as some brand new NPCs who get some good screen time.

I hope Hannah the herborist and Podiker the alchemist appear in 7 dooms, they both proeminently feature in my runelord campaign and it would be interesting for my group if they play a big role here.

Also hope Brodert Quink haven't died in the near 20 years between the campaign, he's probably my party favorite NPC.

James, does Sandpoint have Kennel? They have had Goblin problems for years of game time why hasn't a Huaman or other non-Goblin ranger opened up a kennel to sell trained War dogs to the population of Sandpoint?

Sandpoint does not have a kennel.

Also, one of the key elements of Burnt Offerings is that it's a surprise that the town's been attacked by goblins—up until that point (and pretty much thereafter) the goblins were trouble in the wilds but only in a minor nuisance sort of way. The fact that they got organized to do a big surprise attack on town at the start of Burnt Offerings was a shock and a surprise. AKA: Until then, they never needed a big anti-goblin task force, and after that, they didn't either because a group of heroes rose to the challenge of being that task force.

"Goblin Problems in Sandpoint" pretty much started and stopped during the run time of Burnt Offerings.

The blacksmith, Das Korvut, has dogs (that he loves more than people) and in gameplay over the years he's become more and more of a dog-breeder than a blacksmith -- just cuz my players have focused on that rather than a blacksmith. I've kinda needed him to become where NPC Rangers or Hunters get a Red Mastiff Companion way more than I've needed him to make them a sword or breastplate.

And, since in my games Sandpoint has been for more Low-Level play rather than Mid- or High- Level play -- and since Brinestump Marsh and throughout the Sandpoint Hinterlands Goblins are so predominately in the canon -- I've DMed quite a few 'Goblin-BBEG' encounters and such in order to Level-Up the PCs so they can move on to Magnimar or Riddleport or wherever the campaign goes after 1st-3rd Levels.

(And no matter how much of an ornery butthead I make Das Korvut, the Rangers and Hunters and Druids, even some Fighter PCs, just seem to like him and make friends with his Red Mastiffs.)

I'll jump on this thread to ask something about one famous Sandpoint (former, almost) resident: Shalelu. I think there is some disagreement between Second Darkness and Jade Regent on which dragon she helped killing during the time she spent in the Mierani forest (in Second Darkness).

I seem to recall that in Jade Regent it is said that she helped killing the green dragon who killed her mother, while in Second Darkness that she helped killing a children of said green dragon, which one is it?

Also, her father was killed by an (unnamed) bugbear, and in RotRL she hates Bruthazmus. I suppose bugbears don't live long enough for Bruthazmus to be the bugbear who killed her father?

I think that Shalelu was one of "those" rangers for which "favored ennemy" meant "racist against". I remember that in Jade Regent, one of the thing that made you lose romance point with her was "pro goblin comment". All this to say, I'm pretty sure her hatred of Bruthazmus is simply because he's a bugbear that she faced but haven't managed to kill yet.

I'm pretty sure it's because Bruthazmus killed her mom and goes after elven people in general. At least for him.

Pretty sure her mother was killed by a dragon, but I do remember him targeting elves in particular, yeah, that's probably the reason.
