Remastered and Attack Rolls!?

Rules Discussion

What is the correct definition for Attack Rolls? Is it anything that has the attack trait that rolls a d20? Is it only Attack Roll Spells targeting AC and Strikes? There is several Attack Rolls in the Remastered Player Core 1 which seem to argue this fact. How would you rule this, simply as the old Errata?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

The place to go is the CRB Chapter 9 page 443+
Every d20 roll is a check
Specific Checks lists attack roll as the first type of check. This is the definition.
When you use a Strike action or make a spell attack, you attempt a check called an attack roll. Attack rolls take a variety of forms and are often highly variable based on the weapon you are using for the attack, but there are three main types: melee attack rolls, ranged attack rolls, and spell attack rolls.

Not to be confused with the Attack Trait CRB p629 which mostly is about whether or not MAP applies.

So a grapple is an attack but not an attack roll.

Then there is the natural langauage problem where sometimes something that is hostile is described as an attack when it is not technically an attack eg a Fireball.

As to what is changed in the remaster I can't tell you. But I do not believe this has changed.

I also don't expect this to have changed in the Remaster.

It was changed to this definition in errata after the first version of the rules were created.
