Shadow Mastiff vs Faerie Fire

Rules Questions

A rogue used a limning dagger on a shadow mastiff; I ruled that it worked, negating the creature's shadow blend power - but now I wonder if that was too generous. Shadow Blend states

Quote:
Shadow Blend (Su) In any condition of illumination other than full daylight, a shadow mastiff disappears into the shadows, giving it concealment (50% miss chance). Artificial illumination, even a light or continual flame spell, does not negate this ability...

So if light and continual flame don't negate it, does faerie fire? The latter states

Quote:
Outlined creatures do not benefit from the concealment normally provided by darkness (though a 2nd-level or higher magical darkness effect functions normally), blur, displacement, invisibility, or similar effects.

I'm a bit curious what others think, but I guess it's fairly straightforward that it ought to work.

A pale glow surrounds and outlines the subjects. Outlined subjects shed light as candles. Creatures outlined by faerie fire take a -20 penalty on all Stealth checks. Outlined creatures do not benefit from the concealment normally provided by darkness (though a 2nd-level or higher magical darkness effect functions normally), blur, displacement, invisibility, or similar effects. The light is too dim to have any special effect on undead or dark-dwelling creatures vulnerable to light.

A creature affected by Faerie Fire does not gain concealment because they are outlined, not because the light is bright. A candle does not provide normal illumination it only provides dim illumination. Dim illumination normally gives concealment and a 20% miss chance. But a creature outlined by Faerie Fire does not gain concealment even though the illumination level would normally mean it does. When you attack a creature outlined by Faerie Fire you are aiming at the creature you are aiming for the spell outlining the creature.

i agree with Mysterious Stranger.

i'll only add that light and c. Flame also do not negate invisibility while faerie fire does.
it simply work differently. the reason any light short of daylight do not negate the shadow blend is..well it's still shadowy under less then bright light. but as stated above faerie fire doesn't prevent the concealment by just making it better illuminated, it does by revealing the form by outlining it. (which is why darkness work against faerie fire as it 'swallow up' the outlines)
