Rebellious Witches?

A friend of mine elsewhere on the web asked a couple of questions that kind of straddle the boundary between game advice and lore, so I thought I'd relay her questions here and see what answers you fine folks might have:

Is there anything in the rules/lore that say what would happen if a witch were to come into opposition with their patron? If a witch attacked their patron would they even be able to use their powers?

I don't think there's any explicit rules in this regard except that patrons don't grant or revoke power like a deity does, since they don't have edicts and anathemas to break. They are instructors, not masters. And a lot of this DOES depend on GM fiat to put the witch in a position of conflict with their patron in the first place, but I'm not sure what else to tell her. Thanks in advance for the help! :)

I am not aware of anything one way or the other. That is up to the players at the table (including and especially the GM) to determine.

It probably shouldn't be done as a surprise - from either side of the GM screen.

Liberty's Edge

I would say no because of no anathemas.

In fact I remember there being a thread about Rebellious Cleric which might provide some further food for thought.

But for a Witch, I would say no impact unless the GM thinks there should be (and the player should be warned before, maybe even the PC).

For example, my PFS Witch got his powers through his intense obsessed thorough study of Baba Yaga. I am not even sure she is aware of him and I do not think she could just erase the powers he unlocked through his study.

So, depends on the story being told, I guess.

And maybe the Witch's Patron is not at all who they think it is.

As far as I can recall, there is nothing explicitly about witches and patrons opposing each other in either PF1 or PF2.

However, a witch is dependent on their pact with their patron for their familiar and they cannot prepare spells without their familiar. On the other hand, there aren't any explicit consequences documented for breaking a pact with one patron and making another pact with a different patron; the mechanics of retraining can cover changing the spells known, the familiar type, or even the theme of the patron for a witch.

It is pretty much entirely up to the GM on how important/necessary the patron is to the witch's behavior in a given campaign from a narrative standpoint.
