Wearing arbitrary items

Rules Discussion

The section on carrying and using items reads:

Quote:

Worn items are tucked into pockets, belt pouches, bandoliers, weapon sheaths, and so forth, and they can be retrieved and returned relatively quickly.

It seems a common assumption that this allows any item to be worn, but I could not actually find that statement anywhere, and "worn items" is still a unique category of magic item.

The confusion we encountered comes from the Thaumaturge implement rules:

Quote:
If you had your lantern implement in one hand, a weapon in the other, and a chalice implement you were wearing, you could swap your lantern for the chalice to use its reaction.

"Swapping" the lantern for a worn chalice implies that the lantern can be worn. But if that's true, it's beneficial for any character to wear a lantern to provide light without taking up a hand. Is that the intent?

A Thaumaturge Lantern Implement isn't necessarily a lantern item.

A lantern item has a hand usage of 1, which means that it has to be held in a hand in order to be used.

You could wear a lantern that is not being used, but if you try to wear a lit lantern it may set your clothes on fire.

The text on the Lantern implement says that you can ".. use a common glass lantern" as your implement, so presumably they're the same.

They may start out the same, but they aren't.

Initiate Benefit wrote:

While you hold your lantern, its burning light leaves secrets no place to hide. You can light or extinguish your lantern as a free action once each turn with nothing but a thought, which has the concentrate trait. The lantern shines bright light out to 20 feet and dim light out 20 feet further; this has the evocation, light, and magical traits (the counteract level against magical darkness is equal to half your level rounded up).

The Lantern Implement is powered by magic, not combusting oil.

And please let's not get into discussing 'reality' as a reason to change game mechanics.

So does that imply that you can wear a lantern implement, and it continues to produce light? There is no danger of fire because there is no oil?

Well, the Lantern Implement's ability to produce light also starts with "while you hold your lantern".

That's presumably flavor text?

Regalia and Tome, which also have passive benefits, also start with similar wording - "while you hold your _______".

Bell and Amulet that have active usage for their Initiate Benefits - don't.

Edit: Chalice actually has both. A requirement of holding your Chalice Implement and an activated ability. Which is a bit redundant since you can switch between Implements for a free action when activating one of them. But it does mean that you can't drink from the Chalice while still holding a weapon and Regalia (for example) and only wearing the Chalice.

If you want to wear a light source just buy an Everburning Torch. No chance of lighting anything on fire, or cast a Continual Flame on something you always have on you, like your sword.

Or, buy a Wayfinder and use the Light cantrip that comes with it.

I have occasionally given my familiar Manual Dexterity and Independent so that they could carry and move around the party's light source.

"tucked into pockets, belt pouches, bandoliers, weapon sheaths, and so forth" doesn't exactly scream "my lantern is providing light in a normal and unobstructed way" to me.
