CRB chapter 6 provides the statistics for Unarmed Fist, which state "Hands 1" to indicate that you need a hand to punch someone. The same chapter states that these same statistics are used for other body parts used for an unarmed attack. Does this mean kicking someone requires a hand, or does the unarmed trait offer a work-around by saying it doesn't take up a hand?

From a strict RAW reading, kicking someone could require a hand.
But from my experience, players consider that the statistics used are the damaging ones and not the "Hands 1" part as it would be quite ridiculous to ask for a free hand to kick someone.| breithauptclan |
My strict RAW reading is that if you are actually using your fist to attack, then the hand does need to be free - which only comes up if you have a more specific unarmed attack using your fist, such as the Gouging Claw cantrip or an Ancestry ability that changes your hands specifically like Clawed Catfolk.
Unarmed Attacks specifies that the 'fist' item listed in the weapons is only one of many such unarmed strike options that a character has. The rest use the same weapon stats, but use different parts of the body.

But you can’t use your feet to trip opponents, only your hand or a weapon.
True. At least not without an unarmed attack with the trip trait.
