I’m about to start my Blood Lords campaign. One of my players (new to PF2) is playing an alchemist drawn to alchemical compounds uniquely related to undeath. He is wondering if it is possible to research and create undead versions of formulae like Elixir of Life, etc. I haven’t found rules for researching formulae. I’m aware of the Inventor Crafting skill feat (which semi-applies) – but that isn’t available until 7th level.
I like his idea - any rules or thoughts on how to facilitate this? I’m thinking he could experiment by reverse engineering an Elixir of Life and Oil of Undeath. But what sort of DC would I use? For Elixir of Undeath (minor): 14 (level 1 DC) + 10 (for unique)? And how many days might it take?

I've been pondering this myself for my campaign. My current plan is that I'm just going to reskin the Elixir of Life to an Elixir of Unlife, swap the positive healing for negative healing and give it an Uncommon rarity and treat it as a common formula / item in Geb.
Based on the healing difficulties in Geb, this seems like the easiest route to go. I don't think it's really necessary to reverse-engineer the formula and would treat it like any other alchemical item (for Quick Alchemy or Reagents). For regular crafting, I'd use the base rules for crafting consumables.

Yeah - this all makes sense to me. The character's backstory is that he was thrown out of alchemical college for suggesting such blasphemous ideas as an Elixir of Unlife. This is why he moved to Graydirge - a place to continue his research away from their scrutiny. Having his character have a minor breakthrough would make for a great RP moment early in the campaign and encourage him to conduct further experiments.

I love the backstory; but as far as I can tell Elixirs of Life should by all accounts work on undead.
Negative Healing [basic undead benefits]: "You are damaged by positive damage and aren't healed by **positive healing effects**. You don't take negative damage and are healed by negative effects that heal undead."
Elixir of life
[alchemical, consumable, elixir and healing].
Elixirs of life accelerate a living creature's natural healing processes and immune system. Upon drinking this elixir, you regain the listed number of Hit Points and gain an item bonus to saving throws against diseases and poisons for 10 minutes.
Healing Potion
[consumable, healing, magical, necromancy, **positive** and potion]
A healing potion is a vial of a ruby-red liquid that imparts a tingling sensation as the drinker's wounds heal rapidly. When you drink a healing potion, you regain the listed number of Hit Points.
You could however make the argument that there should be negative healing potions just as there are Healing Potions that have the positive trait

I made a few undead alchemical themed items including an analogous one to elixir of life which gives a bonus to saves against positive effects.
Heres the link lemme know if it helps

This! Beat me to it. RAW, the Elixir of Life just recovers HP without the Positive or Negative tags, so it'll heal HP for anyone!
