Ncuti Gatwa: BBC names actor as next Doctor Who star
I don’t watch Doctor Who, but it’s an iconic science fiction role. I wish the young(er) man good luck in his role.

Haven't seen him in anything before but I hear he is a very charismatic actor and a lot of folks seem excited, so Good enough for me. I look forward to seeing how he dose.
Sad to see Jodie go though, her stories were a bit muddled but I did like her version

Yeah I feel like Jodie got the short end of the stick. I really liked her Doctor and there was a lot of potential for her. But some of the writing was off (though I liked the larger team TARDIS, it felt a bit like 80s Who) and then COVID prevented a lot of further production. Hope she gets at least a phenomenal sendoff.
I wish the new guy good luck. I've yet to see a bad casting for the Doctor, IMO, and I trust until proven otherwise he'll be as good for the job as everyone has been before him.
I wish the new guy well. I will miss Jodie but considering all the trouble she's had (poor writing at times and COVID) it's not surprising she wants to move on.

Russell T. Davies' description of how Ncuti Gatwa was chosen is encouraging. Apparently he was the last actor to audition for the role, and at that point they already had someone chosen and were fairly certain that person would be playing the next Doctor. However, they were so impressed with Ncuti's audition that they scrapped their prior plans and went with him instead.

Ncuti is one of the leads in the Netflix show SEX EDUCATION and is very good and is very funny in that. He initially appears to be the standard "gay best friend" trope but almost immediately develops beyond that and in a different direction. He shows humour, flair, great dress sense and, when he gets really angry, can be quite scary. I think he'll make an excellent Doctor.
It is amusing that people think he's much younger than he is though, because he plays a 16-18 year old on that show. He's 29 right now, will be 30 by the time he makes his first appearance (presumably at the end of the next special) and 31 when his first full episode airs in late 2023. Both Peter Davison and Matt Smith were younger when they first appeared in the role (Smith four years younger).

Colin actually wanted a leather jacket, but producers had a "better" idea.
Thinking about it, Jon Pertwee's style stayed the same, but they did change the outfits, as did Tom Baker's.
Patrick Trouton went through a series of changes before settling on his hobo look.
Even Peter Davidson's and Sylvester McCoy's changed a little.
Why the producer's were so adamant about Colin's outfit is a mystery.
I feel like I should give the new guy a try, but the state of writing of nuWho has gone steadily downhill to the point where I gave up after Whitaker's 2nd season. Let me know if Gatwa gets better stuff to work with.
FWIW Whitaker's more recent special had much better writing than her second season. Understand if you don't want to risk it, but there was notable improvement, IMO.

Jon Nathan Turner had a really, really bad sense of fashion and really, really thought he had a great sense of fashion. Rather than let a costume department do its thing--and the BBC Costume Department left to its own devices generally does pretty well, very generally speaking--he got obsessed with what he thought should be the costumes for the show and refused to budge even when both actors and costumers repeatedly complained. He was responsible for every bad costuming decision you saw in the 80s. It's why indeed all the Doctors under his watch had those dumb question marks on the collar, why Peter Davison barely had a costume change (apart from some very slight jacket or sweater alterations), why poor Tegan was stuffed in that highly unflattering boob tube and then later wore outfits that basically looked like paint threw up on a rag, and why Peri likewise was always wearing those awful leotard + pleated shorts combinations when there are plenty of outfits, even in the 80s, that would have flattered her figure far better. (The last was a frustrating story for Nicola Bryant as she partially, unintentionally, brought it on herself: she was told to wear tight clothing to her audition, and she didn't own anything tight except a leotard, so though she knew it didn't look great, she wore the leotard and a short skirt over it. JNT decided he loved the look and forced the costumers to make all her outfits look like what an out of work actress could throw together in desperation.) And yes, then there was the Sixth Doctor's costume. The costume designer had apparently come up with numerous designs that were gorgeous and he sent them back each time, asking for something more garish, until they got that.

I supposed I should add the grain of salt that half of this information comes from listening (with great amusement and support) to Janet Fielding kvetch on DVD commentaries, as well as of course interviews with Colin Baker and Nicola Bryant. But between them and others that's the sense I've gotten.

any time I think the 80s had the best fashions I force myself to watch national lampoons European vacation.
