Magic item form armor over user.

Heya all. I am looking for a magic item I remember briefly from the 80s or 90s for AD&D. It was a ring that could form a suit of armor or a shield about the user. Or it might have been a metal dog that would follow the user and then form over the user as a suit of armor. Cannot remember if it was in a dragon magazine or some other obscure book.

Not sure what the item or items you are remembering are. I wasn't playing during that time.

For PF2, what comes to mind is Soulforged armor or shield items. Or perhaps a reflavoring of the Dusty Rose Prism Aeon Stone.

The metal dog that follows you around and can transform into a suit of armor sounds a lot like the Starfinder Mechanic trick Drone Meld.

There is also the spell Instant Armor. And Mage Armor put on a Wand flavored as a ring.

PF1 had Folding Plate which was a brooch that could unfold into plate mail.

It also had Djezet Skin which was a ball of metal that would melt over your body to serve as armor.

Perhaps you are thinking of one of those?

If he is talking about 3.0 maybe he is talking about the Ring of Force Armor?

In pathfinder there is also the Armiger's Panoply (not in PF2), that one is a pair of bracers that lets you equip a suit of armor you keep in a linked sack.

These are from 1st or 2nd AD&D. We are talking old school folks. :)

I think these posters thought that, since you're asking in the PF2 Forums, you're looking for the PF2 equivalent.

If you're looking for something for your D&D players, you might have better luck asking in the D&D Forums over at Wizards of the Coast.

I was pretty sure people were trying to figure out the type of item OP was looking for and so gave different version to see which fit better.

Hmm. I never played 2nd edition, but I played 1st edition for a long time and I don't remember any type of instant armor from either the books or Dragon magazines.

Yeah I started with 2nd Ed AD&D in the early '90s but between the Encyclopedia Magicas and all the magazines and third party content there's a lot to sift through.

I started in the late 70's before the Basic Set replaced Search for the Unknown with that newfangled Keep on the Borderlands. The Caverns of Quasqueton forever!

I feel old. :)
