Suplex City

Rules Discussion

OK, I've always wanted to get a grapply sort of character going, and I now see Wrestler as an archetype in Grand Bazaar. While dithering on whether it'd be good on a Gymnast Swashbuckler or not, I see the Suplex feat. 'Make an unarmed melee Strike against the creature you have grabbed or restrained; on a success, the target lands prone, and on a critical success, the target lands prone and takes an additional 2d6 bludgeoning damage.' Having used too many headbutts in life, I'm not able to determine what should happen.

What I want:
Critical success: the target lands prone and takes 2d6 bludgeoning on top of normal damage from the Strike.
Success: the target lands prone and takes normal Strike damage.

Is that how it would be, or do you not get oyur striking damage when sending an ogre crashing down on its back?

2 people marked this as a favorite.

You get what you want. It says "make a Strike" not "make an attack roll". So you also get the success conditions of Strike, which is to inflict damage.

Of note, on critical success you would get double Strike damage instead but that may be what you mean with normal Strike damage.

Yes, Suplex uses the normal Strike action as a subordinate action. So it is a normal Strike action and everything that goes along with it including damage and the possibility of critical hit damage and effects. Also including anything that affects all Strike actions you make (such as a Flurry Ranger's improved Multiple Attack Penalty or a Rogue's Sneak Attack).

You can't replace that Strike action inside Suplex with a different, but similar, action such as a Swashbuckler's Finisher action.

And then after the Strike, the rest of the effects of Suplex are resolved. The target possibly landing prone and possibly taking additional damage - depending on success or critical success of the Strike. You wouldn't double the 2d6 damage from Suplex because of the critical hit of Strike. Because that damage is not part of the Strike action.
