Pahtra character for beginner

Advice

So I just got the Starfinder beginners box but browsed the alien archives. There is a race in particular that interests me. I already have similar characters in an online world called Secondlife. My question is what would be a good place to start if i ever got into organized play. To note, one is a Scientist (Nebulosa Space Exploration Agency Sciences Division) and the other is a Police officer (Interplanetary Customs and Border Enforcement Agency Gendarme and Investigative Corps). I know those agencies do not exist in Starfinder, but just giving a basic taste of their character. I am guessing the Police Officer would be Lawful Good, but not sure about the scientist. Also not sure on the 2 types (Inquisitive and Stalker). Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you
Samm

So for clarification (So I know how helpful or unhelpful I can be), what resources are you willing to use and will you be obtaining more then just the Starter box?

Also, since I have not seen the starter box (I got Core then moved up from there to start) I am guessing it is basically the Core book or is there more in there?

There is no core rulebook, just 2 cut down instruction books (GM Guide, Heroes Guide). The kit has 6 blank character sheets, 6 pre-made heroes, 1 flipmat with blank grid on back and premade dungeon on front (premade items are part of an adventure in the GM Guide), like 80-something pawns of various creatures and the 6 heroes, a set of Dice, and some pawn stands. As for resources, I have every book in my list as I can get (in PDF files) and am willing to purchase pawns and/or miniatures. I actually tried to purchase the core rule book, the character operations manual, the starship operations manual, and the space exploration manual (all in PDF format) already but they double charged me, did not record the order, and i never got the books. I sent them info on it already.

Ok so if you have access to the COM (Character Operations Manual) soon then we have some more choices. 2 of my initial ideas were from there.
With characters you have 2 choices, Theme and class (Race is a third, but you have that).
Scientist. Scholar or Xenoseeker might fit the bill for a Theme. As for class, I think Biohacker has the highest science focus. As for any help with building one, I am not sure. I haven't built one.
Customs agent. Law officer in the COM is a police theme, so that sorta fits. As for class it depends on what sort of Officer you want. With a customs officer, I think an Operative or Envoy could work. Both are skill based, have a variety of builds available.

Edit. Obviously, there will be more experienced players for each of these suggestions, they are just the ones that pop into my head

hello new person.

You can't start with a pathra right away in society play, but if you're playing online I can get you started playing.

Pathra are relatively easy to acquire, and can be bought with 40 achievement points (which you would get for playing 10 times or fewer)

For the scientist, the biohacker works very well. For the police officer, any of the steward archetypes work. Its a matter of determining what kind of police officer.. beat cop? Detective, swat team, negotiator...

How do online Starfinder games work? Is it a download on like steam or something, or is it video sessions of games? As for the Police Officer type, the story for her in SL has her set as Provost Marshal (commander), but i could alter her for beginners to say a Patrol Officer or Investigator/Detective (Since i wrote her as being a part of an interplanetary Police force whose main job is patrol (both Terrestrial AKA planet based and Space (colonies and such), intervention, and investigation).

There are multiple types of online games.

Play by Post or Play by Discord games happen as people have time to post. There is a section of these forums dedicated to online games and recruitment under there. These games generally use Google Slides for maps and the dice roller that is part of these boards for any dice. You can create a profile for each of your characters with the character sheet information there.

Here is one of my character profiles that you can look at. We also have a kit with all the pregenerated characters in BBCode that you might want to look at.

No downloads required for any of the above, although if you are using a tablet or phone you may want to download the Google Slides and Google Docs apps.

There are also VIrtual Table Top (VTT) games that are done in real time. There you need everyone actively playing at the same time. It depends on the VTT if you need to download anything, most just work in your browser. Some of them may not support all browsers.

The best known of these is Roll20 which has it’s own character sheets that it uses. You can get started there for free. They sell subscriptions that give you more features and more storage. They also sell some of the rulebooks for use as in game resources. Getting the rulebooks allows you to drag and drop equipment and spells into the character sheet they created.

Some people also use Discord and Google Slides to do their VTT. Those familiar with those tools find this much easier to get started with than learning a specialized VTT.

I hope this answers some of your questions. I would expect you have more.

Roll 20 as a player is really easy to pick up

Here's an example game

You can click on most of the characters on the map and you'll get pop up buttons up on top of the map. If you click the button to attack, full attack, save, or use a special ability roll20 will roll those dice for you.

If you make a character I can set one of those up for you, I have a template that lets me do it in 5 minutes easy. You can pm me here or poke bignorsewolf on most of the starfinder discords.

So most groups will have roll20 table open like this while talking with each other on discord. Besides that it works mostly like a face to face game.

So, you mentioned I need 40pts to unlock Pahtra. Which character races are available with no points to get started. Also, can you link some of the discords? If you like I can PM you my discord name. Also I do need to mention,I work security like late shift (usually 4p-1a Central Time) but tend to be off work Thur and Fri.

Good news - as of the start of Season 5 back in 2022, pahtra are considered "always available," so you don't need to spend ACPs Spacey-Ps or have a special boon to play one! You just need to own one of the books pahtra are printed in (in this case, Alien Archives 2 or Interstellar Species, for pahtra.)

(Full details on what constitutes 'owning' source books is on the Character Options page, here.)

I got both of those, I got the first character started, i changed her from Customs officer to a Diplomatic protection officer (Very much like Praetorian Guard Speculatores/Exploratores). I am working on my Scientist, she is gonna be a Xenobiologist with a focus on how to create hybrid species. The Biohacker would be her type and maybe Xenoseeker as theme, though her alignment would be chaotic something since she does experiments on unwilling subjects (usually prisoners/inmates, slaves if they exist, etc). Though she doesn't actively seek to end lives so I doubt she would be evil.Though what does "theorem" mean on the biohacker chart?
